Lawyer throws hat in ring for GT showdown

| 17/01/2013

Winston connolly.jpg(CNS): Another independent candidate has declared his intention to run in George Town in the May General Election. Local lawyer Winston Connolly said on Thursday that he would be contesting a seat in the capital, adding that two months ago such a bid was “inconceivable”. Connolly remained tight lipped on what drove him to join the political fray in his press release announcing his candidacy, stating that it was for several reasons that would be revealed during his campaign. Connolly said he would be seeking C4C endorsement and is believed to be one of the candidates the group will endorse. Like his fellow C4C candidate Roy McTaggart, who declared Tuesday, Connolly has not yet set out his policy position on any of the major issues that will dominate the campaign.

In a release announcing his candidacy in the critical six seat district of this campaign, he said he felt compelled to put his hat, and experience, in the ring.

Connolly said he intends to focus on struggling families, professional advancement, education and local and global challenges facing all Cayman residents but he did not specify his position on the major issues.

“People who love their country can change it. Some of our previous statesmen recognized this. It is through political will, hard work and perseverance that we can move Cayman forward in the right direction,” he said.

Connolly spoke about wanting to meet with constituents to gain an understanding of their primary concerns as it is his intention to address them. He said that there were several challenges ahead but was enthusiastic and determined to face them.

As an individual he is not the answer, the independent candidate said, but together with likeminded, patriotic Caymanian leaders no problem is too big to resolve. He did not say which side of the Legislative Assembly those like-minded individuals would be if he were elected to office.

Connolly did say, however, that voters who want, and by all rights should demand, a more accountable government and a better country, ought to come out to support him and these other like-minded individuals.

“We need all hands on deck. The time for partisan politics is over. We need to work together and use all the resources we have to right the Good Ship Cayman. In so doing, we may better understand each other and move ahead as a stronger community and country that is based on mutual respect and understanding of each other,” he added.

“Politics which shuts you out if you are in the 'wrong' party, politics which tells you to settle for the status quo only divides us all. Our heritage was built on the premise that we are one people,” Connolly said in his announcement release.

Caymanians…..Beware of these C4C endorsed candidates. Winstons wants to pursue his business interests by getting into politics. Remember what McKeeva did….

    • Anonymous says:

this is such poppycock – the same could be said for all people that are running for office – don't be fooled by this troller people – policitians in general are doing it for the money – the difference is, some of them choose to steal money from people and make dodgy deakls and don't give a toss about the country and some people, i.e. Winston, Roy … do genuinely care about their country and have the people's best interests at heart.

  2. Anonymous says:

Lets just say these candidates are being pushed by the For Cayman Alliance Lobbyist and they call themselves C4C. Be careful voters, the Devil comes in many forms.

    • Anonymous says:

If you are looking for devils look no further than Mac and Alden.

    • Anonymous says:

All of this sounds good but please answer these questions:

      1. While Winston is personally popular what stand has he ever taken on anything? Ever. It seems that he is overly careful not to offend. Any principled and courageous person will inevitably offend some.

      2. Is it true that he is a member of the Lodge?

      3. If it was "inconceivable" for Winston to run for office until 2 months ago why was he meeting with the UDP in 2009?

      4. Can he state his position on the Legal Practitioner's Bill? Is he again afraid he will offend or does he support the position of the big firms?

Other than Mr. Nice Guy, we want to know who you really are, Winston.

      • Anonymous says:

oh yeah of course you are right – who wants a nice head of government – bring on the Mac-wannabees who want to:

        1. be-little people for the fun of it;

        2. be arrogant to the bone;

        3. have uncontrollable outbursts;

        4. make derogatory statements about the UK and Governor;

        5. spend public money on lavish trips;

        6. receive million dollar gifts from people they have "sorted out" in property deals;

        7. show sociopathic behaviour;

        etc etc etc………

God forbid we should ever have someone run for government that is popular, nice, educated, honest and hardworking.

I don't see what your post has to do with the post you are apparently replying to. Try dealing with the issues it raised.

          • Anonymous says:

Actually, on Mon, 01/21/2013 – 12:12. If you read the original post there were not any issues raised – there were simply questions pertaining to a certain individual, which appearto have been responded to in a rehtoric fashion.

            What are your issues?

Not doing it for money? They're doing it for the love of this country? haha whata crock.. Power is more important than money to these jokers. Once they have power they can make as much money as they want. like a previous poster said. this isnt a damn "Popular" "i like him and he mama"  contest! This is your future and your childrens future! Vote wisely my friends.  Ps. Mckeeva probably richer than all of them from "politics".

  4. Anonymous says:

How can they be 'tainted' by PPM? They had no involvement in any of the overspending.

  5. Kato says:

Here we go again voting because we like someone. Can’t understand why we do this? Shouldn’t we wait to hear of their views on certain issues that are affecting our country? Don’t get me wrong I think Winston is a great guy and one of the better candidate of the fence of the ppm and udp party. However, this is not a popularity contest or are we voting for ms. Cayman, we need to look at there manifesto, digest it and make a decision on who would be the best man or woman for the country. Let us not forget the C4C were the same group that supported udp 4 years ago. Wouldnt their stance on issues affecting our country be one and same?

A cow is a cow no matter how you dress it up….even if you put horns on it!

What I would like to see are people like OC, Calron Powery, Ms. Lookloy, Dr. Tomlinson, Mrs. Flatly all these people contributed to cayman through service and character in their own right. Instead we are seeing flyby people who hasnt have a clue how we are hurting. Rich people gets breaks whilst the poor continues to be taxed! This is how they fix a broken economy.

    • Anonymous says:

Carlon Powery? Really?? The same one who approved the release of dynamite materials without approval from NRA? The same one who just took early retirement from Customs not so long ago?

Everybody is running for George Town, but is anyone running for West Bay?  West Bay is the district that needs help and we don't need anymore UDP'ers or former UDP'er.  Are we to sit by and let these same UDP connections run, get elected and further destroy these Islands. I am from West Bay and I am waiting patiently for good, responsible, respectable and strong candidates to come forward in West Bay or my Election Registration will surely be a wasted vote.  If any of the UDP or former UDP candidates are all West Bay has to offer, I would not even make the effort to go out an vote.  Someone please come out of the closet and put your names forward. I know of 1 candidate so far that is promising and another potential one, but West Bay needs 4 Strong men/women to come fort.  West Bay is hungry for a clean change!

Cayman wants omov! The days of passing the buck is over! Cayman want to see progress and responsibility & transparency!

    Braca

    • Anonymous says:

First off, Cayman voted against One Man One Vote.Secondly, lets correct your grammar.

The days of passing the buck are over (not is over). Cayman wants (not want) to see progress, responsibility and transparency (not progress and responsibility & transparency)

Maybe you should want better education for these Islands. Just saying.

      Towna 🙂

      • Len Layman says:

Not True. The over whelming majority voting in the referendum voted in favor of OMOV.  The manner in which Mac set the bar for passing made it next to impossible to reach.  The simple numbers show that OMOV is what most of the people wanted.

      • Anonymous says:

Thanks mom. I so ashamed now.

You correct the GRAMMAR and continue to vote

      • Anonymous says:

Referendum Result. For OMOV 5631,  Against 3001.

Almost two to one in favor.

      • Anonymous says:

You are wrong. Cayman voted overwhelmingly at 2-1 in favour of OMOV. Those that did not vote don’t have a say. The only reason OMOV did not become mandatory was the artificially high bar set by UDP and PPM. get your facts correct please.

        • Anonymous says:

Facts straight., you need to check your facts. PPM didn’t have anything to do with setting the level for a successful referendum.

        • Excuse me says:

PPM had nothing to do with the bar being set so high! That was all UDP.

        • Anonymous says:

And PPM? While we’re being objective here let’s remember that the government (i.e. The party with the majority of votes) was the UDP.

      • Anonymous says:

Towna, there you go again if you are a real towna trying to be what you are not.  The post that you are so quick to correct seem to be written by a real Caymanian unlike you who is just another massa a$$ kisser who is only Caymanian when it is convenient for you. You just and see, very soon there will be no more turtle in the pot fa the likes of  you, then the real towna will say da wha ya git.  Now go correct that grammar! yes massa collaborator, one that got the opportunity to use knife and fork, invite to a cocktail party and maybe a third rate pass to some fourth rate university.  You are the kind of towna, not the real "Towna" that is the problem with Cayman today.

      • Anonymous says:

Err…Cayman did NOT vote against OMOV at all. 65 per cent voted “yes” to the referendum and supporting ‘one man, one vote’ while 35 per cent of the voters said “no” to the question.

  8. Anonymouse Man says:

I hear what you are saying, but nobody can explain how 18 independent candidates can unite this country, since everybody and his dog claims we are divided. Just give me and idea how 18,000 divided by 18 will give you more unity than 2 0r 3 political parties?

        • PEPE DAT says:

The PPM are less tainted than the C4C, they are all exUDP supporters and they have been living off the hog for 3 plus years. They no different than the UDP, they just come in a nicer package, and marketed as "Country First"or the "Better Way Forward" the sequal. When have these guys ever put "Country First". they wait until they retire to make a stand against the corruption. I think you should look at Wanye Panton, he risked his career by speaking out from the PPM's platform in 2009 when the top man at Walkers, thats putting counrty before money. Where are the UDP endorcers from 2009, they now supporting C4C. Sorry C4C you take us for fools but i think we going to surprise you that we not as "fool fool" as you think we are.

Whilst it is admirable to see well educated and experienced Caymanians running for office, like it or not, all these independents in George Town will split the anti-UDP vote yet again and allow the lunatics back in the asylum. just like 2009. OMOV cannot come soon enough!

  16. I say yes says:

A good breath of fresh air and as long as he stays independent and care about the common person, small businesses and good governance then he’ll succeed. Not because one has an MBA makes you a wise man so be carefulWinston be very careful politics is a nasty game. Wish you all the best.

  17. Anonymous says:

Its not the only criteria to judge a candidate on, but think about how much money Winston (and Roy for that matter) is leaving on the table!!!

He loves his country and wants to make a difference and is willing to take a huge paycut (at a young age, in his prime earning years) to serve his nation.

Kudos to you Winston, and the best of luck!

    • Anonymous says:

I get what your saying but I would guess the man is relatively debt free at a young age, with atleast several hundred thousands in assets/cash.  How much do you think a lawyer much less partner at a law firm makes?  Just the bonuses alone would make your head spin. Greed seems not to be a driver for him and thats a good thing.  Good on him.  Truly a role model for me atleast.  To be young, educated and have finacial freedom. What a dream that would be.

Suffice to say the man has enough to take 4 or more years off to help his country or else he would be a fool take such a gamble with his income especially with a family.  I would think his wife would still be able to support the family finacially in the interim as they doesnt seem to live extravagently .  MLAs get a decent salary and the man has time on his side.  He can still go back to law if politics is not kind to him.

I wish him all the best. We need more like him.

      • Whodatis says:

Although I am in agreement with the two posters above, it is what they have expressed that discourages many Caymanians from entering the political arena.

Here we have two individuals, perhaps strangers to Mr. Roy and Winston, yet they are able to discuss and analyze the most intimate aspects of their lives right here on this very public forum.

This is not a critcism of the two posters, simply an observation.

Anyway, I wish them both well with their campaigns.

I only ask that they do not neglect the middle sector of our society for that is the one that needs the most attention right now – not the top sector in which both candidates normally navigate.

      • Anonymous says:

Nothing against Winston personally but some of these comments are waaay over the top and off the mark completely.

Does anyone really believe that this C4C group are not a political party…or that these ex-professionals like Winston and Roy will be truly 'independent' members of Cayman's LA. if they are successful at the polls ?

Sometimes the naivety of Cayman's voters really amaze me.

This C4C group (party) is building what looks to be the Cayman 'Republican' party…and using local faces, black and white, to hoodwink voters into thinking that these candidates are from and for them.

Winston was raised and lived most of his formative life in North Side by his parents, both the lovliest people you will ever meet…but what real connection does he have to George Town…and its people ?

And now George Town's voters are expected to accept him with open arms and vote for him ?

George Town's people are not so easily fooled…that much I know and can guarantee.

But I can see the C4C political strategy…control the capital and you control the country

That was not for votes as Kurt was not even thinking about being a Politician at those times. Today Kurt can go and eat from their tables on the Brac and likewise the rest of his family.Another thing you will not keep him out of George Town, just look in the East alone, no one can penetrate there like Kurt can. We already put all of our eggs into that (hand)basket with Mac and actually found ourselves in hell! ONE MAN cannot be the answer. Too much power, too much opportunity for failure.

We must elect independant, intelluctual leaders BUT we must also consider the average joe who is considerate of the people. The government needs that balanced mix in order to remain even and safe. Too many in any direction will tip the cart.

I feel that Winnie is a strong candidate and will make an excellent MLA. But not alone. He needs to be fortified with others (like Roy) who are successful and committed. Then, and only then will we start to turn this country around!

Add to that the bluecollar candidates who, though they may not have a degree or be at the pinnacle of their success, are planted firmly on the ground amongst the people and can idenitfy with the average problems of this country. They come with sound ideas and a desire to seek better for the people. We HAVE to marry the two otherwise we get a government that is too corporate and forgets the people – – – who then turn to more crime, more drugs, more negativity. Build Cayman for the people, develop the pillars for the country. That will balance the formula for success and keep everyone happy.

Never, and I mean NEVER, again can this country place a single party in full control of our affairs. We need likeminded individuals who should have the maturity and respect of their peers to come together in the LA and pass laws and regulate our jurisdiction BECAUSE IT SERVES THE ISLANDS' BEST INTERESTS. If you don't agree with the proposal, don't vote on it. Not because your PARTY says no. Not because you don't like the person bringing it to the table. But because you are there to SERVE the people and make the right choices. Because you believe in the law or because you don't.

Cayman lost sight of that in the last 12 yrs and the price paid has been brutal.

Winnie, Roy and others, please do us proud. Please remember WHY you took that step forward and bear in mind that your PEOPLE come first, above all else. Teach them to fish fellas – give a hand up, not hand out.

Somebody call 911 ppm and udp are done, oh yeah!! we got a new group now that well lead us like we deserve.  Sean KIngston

Don't proceed with too much haste, a country gets the government they deserve. If you are corrupt or condone corruption you will get that quality of a Government

  36. Anonymous says:

I can honestly say that "I am proud to be Caymanian"! Our prayers are being answered!!!

  37. Anon says:

One of macs previous supporters but i will give him a chance and let by gones be by gones.

  38. Anonymous says:

Hmmm…think i like it but need to see what he truly stands for. Nice effort from c4c though.

    • Anonymous says:

What he should tell you is that he was contemplating running with UDP in the last election. In fact C4C is all disgruntled UDPers

      • Anonymous says:

Is a disgruntled UDPer a PPM or an independent?

      • Anonymous says:

That's a fact. Like the Moxom's, the Reid's, the Guilfoyle's, the March's and the like. They were staunch supporters of Mackeeva when they were getting the big piece of the pie. When Mac dropped GLF and another major proposed project, them h'all left the UDP high and dry! Oh, please don't forget Pilar Bush! She couldn't get her way with CaymanAirways and packed it in and now claim to be an advocate by joining the C4C group of disgruntled babies!

So please don't trust the endorsement that the C4C grants!

        Winston, congratulations!

We would be delighted to see a Connolly administration and it is good to see a fellow Rotarian throwing his hat into the policital arena.  You have our unbridled support.  Now, please go and make a difference (if you could also get the port done and solve the landfill problem whilst you are at it that would be appreciated as well).

    • Anonymous says:

Dont forget he is a freemason as welll – so all his lodge brothers in the PPM can vote for him too.

i doubt he will do anything for the poor though – never has and never will

      • Anonymous says:

You are obviously not a Freemason (wouldn't they let you in? not good enough?) is that why you are making such stupid remarks?

  40. Anon says:

He must be smart he woks at maples. But they prob wont make him partner as usual. He is good for elections. We need to give young people like this a chance. I rather him than ken bryan any day.

    • Anonymous says:

he hasn't been a Maples for a couple of years now, but support what you saying – Winston is the best candidate in my view.

    • Anonymous says:

He doesnt work at Maples or any other law firm.   He is a director at Highwater.

    A who dat?

Excellent news! Two great forward thinking people coming forward in George Town!

In the pas i have always voted in Bodden Town and this is my first year voting on George town and i have to say until these two came on the political scene, I was seriously wondering who I would vote for.

Thank you Roy and Winston for stepping up…You have two of my votes!

Alden should have recruited winston instead of some of the jokers on the ppm ticket.

    • Anon says:

None of the independent minded candidates trust or will work with a man as arrogant as Alden

      • Anonymous says:

You call him arrogant because he has more support than C4C

      • Anonymous says:

Jealousy is a hell of a thing that has taken hold of some of us Caymanians.Alden just stands up for what he thinks is right and he dosent bow his head to everything. Anyone that you see agreeing with every thing you say has a problem, dont trust them. Julie even said that Alden had taken the Bible out of the schools, what wont people do to destroy you and elevate themselves. By the way when will c4c be announcing her as one of their candidates, with all this quiteness we know that she is cooking up something as she is a good calculator. I wonder how many of them are getting any sleep at night now a days. We thought that Mr Gilbert would be smart enough and run in the Brac this time as this will bve his best shot, instead he is now being married to her.You see it dosent take College graduates to be smart some of the smartest people are just Elementary Caymanians. We want c4c to come out with their Brac Candidate. We are hoping that it would be either Lindburg Martin better known as Bucky, Dan, Jude, Mr Bernard good lookingsons, or Virginia Castillo. The Brac hve so many educated and ambitious people, what a shame that only two people can be found to run.

    • Anonymous says:

you mean like former drug dealers?

    • ANONYMOUS says:

Winston is smarter than that,PPM days are over just like their cousins the UDP .

  44. Anonymous says:

Winnie and roy will protect the interest of the big wigs in finance industry. Hopefully we will get some of the scraps but i wont hold my breath

  45. Anon says:

Yes he needs to meet with constituents to understand what our issues are because otherwise i dont think he would have a clue.

  46. Anonymous says:

This is what we need from c4c. Keep the announcements coming!

  47. Anonymous says:

    Go winston!

  48. Anonymous says:

In other words, i think i made enough money for now so will try get a likkle power and influence. Just like roy i am not really into this. That said its great to see caymanians like winston step forward.

  49. Wote says:

Nice guy but maybe he should run in nothside as he has better chance up there. Gt is going to be crazy dude and will be hard to get enough votes. I prefer if u go help us get rid of ezzard.

    • Anonymous says:

Poster at 8:31(Wote) You would love that to happen. Two strong independent candidates should declare in the one district that has real representation and beat each others brains out while the party faithfull quietly slip into office in the other districts.

Winston you go in George Town and don't worry about Mr Ezzard who is doing a good job for all Caymanians up in North Side. As a George Town voter you have my entire family's vote, and not just because you are family but because you are the best choice.

    • Anonymous says:

He Will be elected in GT Wins can't hold a good man down.

  50. Skep says:

Nice try..now go have one of your secret meetings in that secret society thing with all the movers and shakers and then come let us know what THEY say your policies should be..

    • Anonymous says:

      I am puzzled.

If it is a secret society how do you know about it? If they have secret meetings how do you know about them. Or maybe you belong to the same society. So you are one of these people in this secret society who will be telling him what to do?

Or just maybe you don't know what you are talking about because as far as I know just about everyone (especially those who live close by) knows where they meet and some know when!!

What's wrong wouldn't they let you join???

  51. Proud Kmanyan says:

    Congratulations Winston ….you got this!

  52. Anon says:

Another c4c one that seems smart but not sure i he will represent “us” i still find it hard to warm up to these former udp supporters who are now flying in to save us. Why didnt they do us a favour 3 years ago.

    • Anonymous says:

Cant find anything wrong with Winston …. I understand you are just trying to protect your PARTY (PPM) and not your Country.  Let new blood come in and clean both the parties out!

    • Anonymous says:

stop being such a sh#thead!!!..If he was supporting the PPM before would you be saying anything?…try go sit down..

Everyone was PPM and we let them idiots run us into the ground and replaced them with UDP that didn't do anything for four years but spend money and raise taxes.

Enough with the 'party politics" crap already..

      Good job Roy and Winston!

      • X Voter says:

The poster has a genuine concern, C4C did not assist any lower income people at Christmas, you look down on low income families because we need a little help now and then, you call it Vote Buying, but its called being a human being and helping someone less fortunate than yourself. Thanks to the super wealthy C4C there are a lot of "us" and we will show you all what "sh#theads" we are come May.

        • Anonymous says:

Really! Are you saying that it is not vote buying because PPM or UDP gave you things for Christmas. My god man…get a clue..

you are shooting yourself in the foot..when you are on the gravy train you will always be on the gravy train…Why would UDP, PPM or C4C want to make things better for you to moveinto the middle class if they can throw a bone to you every now again to ensure your vote.

  53. Anonymous says:

He is ok and i wish him luck. So is he willing to work with the former ud guys also or the ppm?
