C4C candidate hopes to build support in BT

| 15/03/2013

Kent McTaggart candidate for Bodden Town (225x300).jpg(CNS): Updated — Kent McTaggart has thrown his hard hat into the political ring and will be fighting for one of four seats in Cayman’s fastest growing district on the C4C ticket. The first candidate to be endorsed by the group in Bodden Town McTaggart said his dream for Cayman is a country defined by trust, honesty, responsibility and respect. Adopting a mantra that is increasingly popular with many candidates, in a release announcing his intentions to run, McTaggart said he wanted to re-establish trust in government. With a 20-year career in construction, he said he would be refocusing his experience in managing diverse, complex projects to the cause of serving Cayman and its people.

“Cayman is our home and I am passionate about building a bright future for our children. It is time for me to step forward and defend the values of Caymanians,” McTaggart said.

Should McTaggart be elected, he said his first task would be to identify the true fiscal position of the country. “Running major construction projects – that include the management of budgets, labour pools, procurement processes and client relationships — has taught me to always look for better, more efficient ways to get things done,” he explained. “I’ll bring that experience with me to the Legislative Assembly.”

He said that managing large teams had also taught him how to unify and coordinate the efforts of diverse personalities towards a common goal, and he believes this is what the country needs to pull together and put Cayman first.

“Teams perform best when they work together,” said the would-be politician. “The best decisions for Cayman will come from lively, honest, respectful discussion that is centred on a common goal — to do what’s best for Cayman,” he said. “Our actions today will affect our tomorrow and that is why it’s time for us all to take pride, be responsible and provide our future generations with the opportunities they deserve.”

Talking about the key campaign issue in Bodden Town, McTaggart told CNS that he was opposed to the relocation of Grand Cayman’s landfill to the heart of his district.

"I am opposed to moving the waste of the entire country to Bodden Town," he said.  "I am completely in favor of mandatory recycling, as I truly believe this is the only solution for our refuse issues.'

Gregg Anderson, who has also sought endorsement from Coalition for Cayman has also made it clear he will be opposing the relocation of the dump, as do all four of the Progressive candidates, who are expected to make a strong showing in the district.

So far, the UDP candidates as well as the interim cabinet members, Dwayne Seymour and Mark Scotland, who are being dubbed the "UDP Lite", will all be campaigning in support of the Dart proposal to move the landfill. While there are many challenges for the country’s historic capital, which will be returning four members to the Legislative Assembly at this election, the question of the landfill will be taking centre stage on the Bodden Town campaign trail.

CNS Note: In reference to queries regarding Kent McTaggart's eligibility, the candidate has told CNS that he is confident he is qualified under Section 61.3 of the elections law.

    • My two cents says:

I just listened to Kent on Rooster and here is a summary of his rise to politics. (In his own words!!!)

      1. He said Politics was never his priority, he doesnt fancy himself a politician and he wasnt planning to be one he was happy being a carpenter.

      2. He is not an intellectual – he works with his hands and has the callouses to show for it.

      3. He says the Cayman Islands budget is too complex for him to understand, so he doesnt know exactly what financial position we are in. (Maybe because he is looking at the wrong document, the budget is not a financial report that can be used to determine what financial position we are in). He deferred the analysis of our Financial position to others.

      4. He said he only understands simple words.

      5. He said he is not a social person and if you want to find him he is at home with his dog.

      6. He has obviously been listening to the PPM he supports working with the district council to allow more participation in Government, He wants to restore good governance, he wants to help small businesses, he wants to create jobs, all items put on the table by the PPM.

My overall assesment of Kent is he brings nothing to the table. Cayman needs dynamic, educated and intelligent leaders not people who admit that they are not intellectual and prefer to be working witht heir hands (Blue Collar). We need serious people not some guy who wants to "Give this a try". He said his concern for Cayman led him to run, but how is he any different than the average Caymanian? We are all concerned but we are all not running for office. This is no time for Kent to be "trying out" a new career. He should stick to what he knows and recognize that his chances are slim to none and all he will be doing is splitting the vote and taking votes away from those who can properly represent us. He seems to be taking onthe role of Spoiler without even realising it.

Kent needs to step aside and allow those with the education, experience and ability run the country. Throw his support behind them and stop asking people to split up their vote and return the UDP to power.

      My two cents.

      • keep the change says:

I was going to destroy your post point by point, but I am simply going to say if that is what you got from what was said on the radio today, I truly feel bad for you.

I heard Kent on the Radio this morning as well.  He is  a hopeless  ignorant hot mess!! He does not know the difference between a Budget and  a Financial Report.  "My Two Cents"  I see that C4C gave you a few thumbs down, so obviously they are as far out as he is.  Please do not let him near a microphone again. Total disaster.  Just leave him at home with his doggie.

I bet you don’t have the manhood to stand within 2 feet of him and say those same things!

  2. Anonymous says:

At the time CNS released this, he had no comment on the dump issue. Now I see that he is taking a stand but he is opposed to moving the waste of the entire country to BT. What does that mean? we will take half and the other half Can stay where it is? Come on this is not rocket science there is technology out there to fix the problem where it is period! we need to recycle now not 5 years for now! We can give Caymainans jobs by setting up recycling stations in each district! There is money in Garbage that is one of the reasons Dart wants to remediate the 80 feet of garbage in GT. Google it, garbage is gold! we have a gold mine and we just want to give it away like we did WB Rd!

  3. Anonymous says:

I agree with you 13:36 and it is ignorant B Towners that can't even spell as is noticed in most comments that can't be expected to be more intelligent in the voting process.  This is the main reason we are in the mess we are in…..uneducated and unitelligent people who have voted in someone from Boden Town atc. who have no credentials, no backbone, no integrity to be able to make the changes we need for the betterment of Cayman, not just any one district.  If you want to make your vote count toward a better future for yourself and these islands listen to what ALL the canidates in YOUR district especially have to say and give those a chance to prove they will make positive changes for you and our bloved islands.  Open your minds to ALL of  what is said in their public meetings and when they come to your door, ask them the questions you have and then hold them accountable.  You cannot possibly think you have had great leadership in Bodden Town the last four years and beyond.  Please tell me what John John and Mark and Anthony have done in the LA since they were elected??? NOTHING…We cannot risk having more NOTHING for the next 4 years.  Vote sensibly this go round Bodden Town.  Kent does not have to be from Bodden Town to make your lives there better.  You are a part of Cayman remember not a separate entity if some of you even know what that means.  Elect Kent if you want someone who will make you proud to have cast your vote for.

    • Anonymous says:

That's why we get no where in Cayman..you callme uneducated, unintelligent and basically stupid because i ask a question than expect me to vote for one of your "dollar" people.

Maybe there is more highly educated people in GT so that is why the majority of them or running there…or maybe it is where the money is? Let me know ya hear!

    • Educated Bodden Towner says:

You need to STOP making a fool of yourself.  If we Bodden Towners are so ignorant then let mehelp you with a little grammer and spelling knowledge.

You stated that Bodden Towners are (unitelligent) well the correct spelling word for that is (unintelligent)

You also stated….uneducated and unitelligent people who have voted in someone from Boden Town atc. who have no credentials, no backbone, no integrity to be able to make the changes we need for the betterment of Cayman.

….If I may help you with a little grammer and pronunciation, the correct or proper sentence would be….

Bodden Town people are very educated and intelligent people who has always voted for the best canidates for Bodden Town (not Boden Town)  We have always voted for canidates who has credibility, good strong back-bone and most of all integrity to be able to make the changes we need to help better (not betterment) of Cayman.

So tell me who is the ignorant ones now ?

      • Anonymous says:

        Oh dear.

        1. You misspelled "grammar" twice while chiding someone else for spelling errors (which were really typos).

        2. You haven't mastered subject-verb agreement: ("the people who has…"; "canidates who has…"; "…who is the ignorant ones now?") but have criticised the grammar of the other poster.

        3. You made your own typo twice: "canidates" .

        4. "We need to help better… of Cayman". makes no sense.

Unfortunately, you proved the poster's point.

  5. Caymanian woman says:

Kent may be a good person but how come we have never seen him Bodden Town. I wish the people who declare weeks before the election were people who have been playing active and committed roles in the Bodden Town Community.
You don’t hear them on the radio, you don’t see them in Bodden Town at community functions, you never see them in our Bodden Town neighborhoods.
People who want to run for office not only need to be honest and have a love for Cayman but they need to be able to connect with the constituents they will be and are representing. If they can’t do this what is the point? How can they be a voice for the people of Bodden Town in the Legislative Assembly?
All that will happen is the people will be left behind again with no voice and no proper representation. What is his plan to connect with the young people in Bodden Town?
What are his plans for continued development of Bodden Town and to continue the Go East Initiative?
What does he intend to do to provide employment in Bodden Town?
What are his plans to tackle the drug issue in Bodden Town?
What are his plans to strengthen the Police Force in Bodden Town and the HSA provision of services at the Clinic?
What are his views on the New Waste Management Facility?
What are his plans to deal with the growth in the Bodden Town Community and the provision of essential services which would encourage development in Bodden Town?
We have one Bank in Bodden Town, one ATM machine, one supermarket, two major restaurants ( 1 fine dinning & 1 fast food where you can sit down and eat in), several small food joints & fast food restaurants, one major hotel & condominium accommodations in Central BT. Only one major utility service provider present in Bodden Town! (i.e. Lime). How does he plan to improve these situations?
There are many other issues facing the Bodden Town Community and I don’t understand how these ‘good & honest’ people have just been getting on with their lives but now they make good representatives, void of being active members of the communities in which they now want to represent.
The tough questions need to be asked and answered!

You have never seen him in Bodden Town?  Really? He grew up in Spotts, Lived in Lower Valley and Northward for years.  Do you know where the boundries of Bodden Town are?  I will give you a hint, it is much MUCH bigger than gun square.

  6. Anonymous says:

I was thinking about supporting him until I noticed that he is a C4C candidate. Is the C4C now admitting that they are a political party?

  7. unbelievable says:

I cannot believe there are so many people in BT willing to accept this UDP/C4C Spoiler. If you have any doubt that the UDP and C4C are working together now, just answer this question. Why in the world would C4C run this guy who has no chance to win in BT instead of Charles Clifford? They obviously are using him to split up the votes that is the only explanation for why he is in the race. People like Kent will help the UDP rise to power again. I hope everyoen with a little sense will at least give this some thought! Kent was on OMOV along with a lot of other people, that alone does not qualify him to run. What else can he offer?

    • Anonymous says:

Kent will help the UDP rise to power again?  You have no clue…

      • family tree says:

If you do your part that cannot happen.  you need to understand that it is you, the voters that make that decision.  go listen to them all, make decisions for who you will support based on what you hear for yourself and then help spread the word.

    • Pain-n-Plane says:

Do you know Kent?  I would assume not, and there is nothing wrong with that.  I do know him and I will say that if you take an hour and go to one of the yard meetings he will be having, ask your question you will see that 1) he has no association with the UDP 2) he has solutions to offer 3) he is a real person that walks the same road we do.  So do yourself a favor and put down your guns, and give each and every candidate the opportunity to win your vote.

  8. Anonymous says:

First of all, we need to know who is behind the C4C? Is it Mr. Dart? Why are they endorsing so many Ivory Tower Candidates? What are their AGENDA? Most of their candidates were once associated to the UDP, this is scary and its confusing to the voters. Voters, please do not be fooled. Who are these Lobbyist?

  9. Anonymous says:

Kent I would take a chance on you but since you wiht the C$C, I can't take no chance with that one!

  10. Anonymous says:

He is somebody who is honest, has the welfare of the Cayman Islands at heart and is not corruptable.  That last character trait will probably not serve him well in any Government of the Caymans but I do wish him well.

  11. Anonymous says:

Kent is a good guy. I know he has Cayman at heart.

  12. Anonymous says:

Kents a solid guy! BT needs a man like him! BT dont mess this one up for the rest of us!

  13. Anonymous says:

Well Mr. McTaggart if you have no comment at this stage of the game on one of the most important issues of the proposed plan to move the dump to BT then we have to assume you are for it. If that is the case you might as well save your campaigning dollars and seek another district to run in. And that is that! Please don’t come knocking on my door for my vote! This district needs help and dumping it with garbage is just WRONG! If Dart can’t stand it let him use his millions to fix it at the current site if his proposed plan is so wonderful! I will vote for the people that will truly represent us and fix the problem at the current site. If we would of continued our commitment when we signed up Wheelbrator this problem could already be a year into getting that dump sorted!

    • Anonymous says:

It is stated the he is opposed to it.

    • Anonymous says:

Sadly your stance seems to be one that would throw the baby out with the bath water. You are so confident in your stance that your perception of his stance is enought to write him off? I hope the rest of the voting population is wiser than you.
And I actually see above where he is against moving the dump to BT
I wish Kent well, he has fresh common sense views that I understand, I would suggest everyone in BT take the time to chat with him

  14. Anonymous says:

Mr. mctaggart will do well. He is a straight up person and not afraid to say what is on his mind. He was very instrumental in helping with the one man one vote and his a worker. Bodden Town needs some life and synergy.

    Good news!

  16. Weekend Warrior says:

I would have voted for you if you were really independent. C4C is UDP and I want nothing to do with them. They are the reason for the dump coming to Bodden town and ‘all’ of them for the west bay road closure.

    • Anonymous says:

If you take time to know kent, or speak to anyone who knows him you will understand that he is the polar opposite of Mak. Kent definitely isn’t UDP. And above it says he is opposed to the dump moving to BT. So talk idleness if you must, but the facts are easy to find. I hope we can get at leastone more good candidate like Kent and Al up here in BT, so we don’t have to settle with these other options

      • Anonymous says:

C4C and UDP are so shrewd Kent may not even realise he is being used.  Too bad a good guy has been misled.  This time around we will vote PPM we know and agree with their plans for BT.

  17. Anonymous says:

Kent, I love you man but do you really want to take this on? Your a very ambitious, intelligent Caymanian with a lot on your plate at home. Give yourself a break, don't put this additional stress on your shoulders! As for the relocation fo the landfill, it has to happen, it doesn't matter where, every district would try to oppose it, it just makes sense to move it as the current location can not sustain the growth of the country. We need new infrastructure and as a developer who intends to build near the new proposed Waste Management Facility, I have no objections to it, don't think it will negatively effect my project at all. After all it is not a "dump" as the party against it would try to make us beleive, it is a modern facility. So if you're runnign for BT my friend, don't be afraid to support it, it won't hurt your votes from intelligent voters!

    • Anonymous says:

Let's be realistic!  Why do people keep refering to the new "Waste Management Facility" when all Dart proposes to do is dig two holes in the ground and line them with a plastic liner? I heard Mr. Scotland on Friday speaking on Rooster that RECYCLING COULD BE DONE ON THE SITE.  Is thatall they mean by Waste Management?   Who is going to construct a Waste Management Facility and where will the money come from?  C. I. Government can't do it.  The government will promise anything until the deal with Dart is finalized.  The dump was there when Dart bought the land but now he wants it moved and since he has the money Gowernment will capitulate to his wishes. Since you intend to build near the new Waste Management Facility I am wondering if you will have the money or influence to persuade government to move the dump, which is all it will turn out to be, to stop smelling up your place?

Please get overthis mind set that a MLA must be at your doorstep helping you with everything!!! Try to think like a man of thought, and look at the attributes each person brings to the table.

The only way we will get over this hump of having corrupt MLA's is when WE stop fostering their bad habbits and stop putting them in!! It is our people (some) who don't think about the country, just their own pockets!!!

That's why we are in this mess now!!! After all, the politics of a country is just a reflection of the beliefs and attributes of the majority.
