PPM takes aim at Mac in WB

| 18/03/2013

ray farrington_0.jpg(CNS): The opposition leader has toldthe PPM party faithful that the “Progressive Express had left the station” and was on route to the Legislative Assembly, picking up passengers along the way. Confident that the PPM would form the next government, Alden McLaughlin said the party made history on Thursday night when it opened a branch office in the district of West Bay and formally introduced its three candidates, who would break into what he called “fortress McKeeva”. He said the PPM would shake off the stranglehold that the former premier, McKeeva Bush, and the UDP have had in the district since the party was formed.

Speaking at the formal opening of the PPM’s West Bay office, where close to 200 people had gathered, the opposition leader said the Progressives had done what no one “believed was possible” with the establishment of a branch office (LeMar Village, Unit #12, 312 W.Church Street) as well as fielding three candidates on the PPM ticket, giving people a genuine political choice in the district.

McLaughlin said that if the people of West Bay wanted representation in the next government they had to vote for the three Progressive candidates. He reminded them that in 2005-09 after the PPM won every seat it had contested, West Bay was left without any representation in government.

“This time it is different,” he said, acknowledging that the PPM should have run its own candidates in the district in previous elections. “We are fielding a solid team and all we need is your support and West Bay will be represented in the next government.”

The PPM leader said that the party had a real chance of securing seats in the district in the 2013 vote. He said the UDP vote would be split because of the fracture between Bush and Captain Eugene Ebanks on the one hand and their former district party colleagues, (the 'UDPLite'), Rolston Anglin and Cline Glidden, on the other. The two men were both ousted from the UDP after they supported the opposition’s no confidence motion in the wake of Bush’s arrest in December.

“The UDP is dead nationally,” McLaughlin said as he called on the party faithful to spread the word in the district that unless people voted PPM they would not have any MLAs in government come 23 May.

Ray Farrington, Woody DaCosta and Capt Bryan Ebanks, who are all now confirmed on the PPM ticket, called on the district to help them get elected.

Farrington said they would work towards getting the people of West Bay self-sufficient again and stop relying on hand-outs from politicians.

“We will work to ensure corruption is stamped out,” he promised, adding that teamwork achieves more. Ebanks said the UDP had put money and personal opportunity above the district as he asked the people “not to let your country slip away” and warned that they should stay engaged with local politics and vote Progressive.

DaCosta said the PPM would win and promised a Progressive government in a progressive country. He also said the Progressives were committed to taking back the West Bay road and fighting for two roads into the district. He explained that there had been considerable debate in the PPM about the issue but now the party was now committed to keeping the West Bay Road as a through route.

Although the PPM leadership continues to state that it wants to run four candidates in West Bay, it has not yet confirmed a fourth name for the district that is likely to prove the toughest for the Progressives.

However, no other group has yet revealed a full four candidate team for West Bay. As of Monday morning (18 March), the UDP had not yet announced who will be joining Bush and Eugene Ebanks on the UDP ticket. Although Bush is expected to be re-elected with a significant majority, despite his current difficulties in relation to a number of police investigations, and likely to carry Ebanks with him, there has been no announcement from the UDP about who will be joining them on the campaign trail. With question marks surrounding the full UDP team, Bush could lose his long held four-seat UDP grip in the constituency.

Anglin and Glidden have not yet indicated how they plan to retain their seats or whether they will be inviting two more people to join them as they fight alongside their current Cabinet colleagues.

Dwene Ebanks is the only independent candidate to announce his intention to run in the district so far, though it is anticipated several more will be announcing over the next week as the clock ticks down to Nomination Day on 27 March.

Meanwhile, Tara Rivers and Mervin Smith have both opted to run on the Coalition for Cayman platform, but no formal announcements regarding their endorsement has yet been made.

I notice they left out 2 members out  their little progessives"Hoe down" advertisment at the family life center, must as well because just like they sleep through legislative sessions contributing absolutely naught but a few words here and there because these 2 regressives always try to get sympathy voters who will elect them everytime for attending funerals and government sponsored functions. No money to help the poor but we can bring a country western star ??  Same old  PPM!!!

The country star  is not being paid, he is doing this for free! Ah boy,…… haters!

My votes are to people who aren’t only bright good leaders but also people who I can walk up to in any supermarket and be able to speak to them with trust and hope. And to feel the confidence knowing they are paying my situation some mind. No airs about them, just real. There are many candidates out there, but my votes will be for COMMUNITY leaders who not only talk but LISTEN and ACT.

Am glad to see bright people out there, but the bigger question is, do you really know your people? Are your fingernails full of soil from planting and attributing to the up keep of your community? When was the last time you brought kids in the community together for a cause? When did you rally in public to save our road? When did you go speak to your drug addict family members and provide them hope? When did you last go visit your elders? When did you last buy your neighbor a plate of food? Etc. When did you? Where were you? That’s my question. Where were you, till now? And do you really know our names, or just the names of your wealthier friends?

I want a team that are real to us and who are there for us. Just like our politicians of yesteryear.

My votes so far are to Velma (if she declares) and Dwene…real West Bayers. Both are bold, brave, truthful, bright and loving. And both worked hard in the civil service so they know the runnings. My other two votes might just stay blank if I don’t see anymore that peek my desire to vote for them. But right now, it’s a sad toss up of this one got this, and that one got that. But the bottom line is, no others carry the majority of attributes that I feel we require to truly be our leaders and spokespeople.

    Community first!

    • Anonymous says:

So If your community leaders are busy dealing with your list of things at the supermarket, then who is going to run the country? I need speed bumps and too many dogs loose in my community. So he or she better have time when they finish talking with you about your problems to deal with my community woes as well. ohh and my driveway need paving.

On to me next. Its always about me, me me, me, selfish. Then you wonder why nothing gets done in this country? Everyone too busy asking for handouts. call it what it is, each small personal favor is a handout. Yes we all deserve a little once in a while.

You want to get to a point that when you see your Leaders in the supermarket with your trolley over flowing with all the food and items that you too caught up and the least you do is give them the thumbs up and say "good job BoBo, sorry I na ga time talk wid yu". when we all living good because of good leadership, we will not have time to go to community meetings to hear about what the country leaders have to update us about, we will be so tired of working and playing with the kids.

And by the way community Leaders are not paid, they are just that community leaders.Im not voting for community leaders, Im voting for country leaders. So VOTE SMART, its not all about you, its also about me and my family andthe Cayman Islands.

You seem to be missing the point of what this poster is saying. Read and understand. It is clearly stated that they are interested in community leaders and not handouts like your obvioulsy used to hearing about now. Be smarter than a third grader by reading and thinking before you speak.

I wouldn’t vote for PPM if they collected enough money and gave me to retire on and live at least as well as I am doing now. No way!!
I will put it this way they couldn’t buy my vote much less get it for free.
Alden for one is tooarrogant …. doesn’t have the kind of leadership qualities it takes to run a government and he feels he has to be the leader, walking around like a barnyard rooster that thinks he is in charge of the whole chicken coop. That is why him and Arden couldn’t make it, they stubborn just alike but give me Arden any day.
The PPM offerings in W B isn’t any big threat because they not down with the common or small man and there are a lot more of them. I would really like to see Ray fitting in down Goat Yard like how Big Mac can.

Look at the record of Big Mac! He has NOT lost an election since 1984 and honestly speaking I don’t see him losing this one. He carried in Benson, Daphne, Johnnie, Tom, Capt., Rollie, CG hanging to his coat tail and the same scenario will likely play out again. Heck Rollie and CG migh even lose their seats to Bernie and Velma. With that said- party politics as we know it in Cayman is dead. I am not saying that some candidates from either party won win, all I am saying is that neither party will get the majority needed to form a government. PPM, what is your plan? What is your vision? You have identified the problems, now give us our solutions! UDP, we know from whence you cometh thus no more needs to be said.

    • Anonymous says:

Actually in 1984 it was Mr. Benson who carried in McKeeva. Tom Jefferson certainly did not need his coattails.

      • Anonymous says:

With maybe the exception of 1984, tell us who has been the first elected member of the district from 1988 onwards. With that said, I think what the poster was trying to say is that the man is very popular in the district and commands a majority (way over 70%) of the electorate. The numbers don’t lie……check the election results. I will also agree with him/her in that neither current party will get the numbers needed to form a government!!!

        • Anonymous says:

Actually in 2009 in was 71.59% of the votes cast, not of the electorate, and that only proves that he is like Jim Jones to the majority of WBayers.

I agree that there will probably be a coalition govt.

        • Anonymous says:

Sorry but you are misquoting figures, perhaps deliberately. The percentage of votes quoted on the Elections website is a percentage of the votes cast, not of the electorate. The electoral register at the time did not only have 3006 voters registered, it had 3762.

Therefore 57% of the electorate voted for Big Mac, not 71%. The latter figure is also not way over 70% as you state.

That is a HUGE difference. Just over half compared to almost 3/4.

A small point but a very important one.

  9. Anonymous says:

Yes! Of course! The PPM is the panacea to West Bay’s and, consequently, Cayman’s, problems. Sure, they’re very different from the UDP. Let’s see, the west bay platform is made up of a couple of pretty good talking wannabe politicians and one Captain who really isn’t a Captain, being led by a selfish, narcissistic prick who spends most of the time thinking about himself rather than his country. And they really have no plan but they are quick to mouth platitudes and rhetoric about what they are going to do for you, provided, of course, that you “wote straight” come this election. Definitely no similarity there with the UDP of 2005!! Riiiight!! And I bet Alden has some oceanfront property in Montana for sale for a good price too….

    • Centrist says:

Vow, what did Alden do to you?  Why so much venom?  If you had attended the meeting you would have heard facts from Woody DaCosta how the PPM government did more for West Bay than the previous and present governments.  The UDP lost in 2005.  I support the Progressives to win in 2013.  Go Progressives!

      • Anonymous says:

Oh, it’s ok for the PPM to spew all their venom on others but no one can say anything about arrogant Alden? Sorry pal, but if you think Alden comes off as a people person you are seriously blind! I wouldn’t vote for him if he was the only person standing. Don’t forget that his policies nearly left us bankrupt! All he wanted was monuments built in his name as if he were pharaoh in Egypt. I pray that this does not bring us down because if we were ever in a bad situation like after Ivan, how on earth are we going to continue keeping up with out debt? We are like a family living from pay check to pay check and two days away from a disaster. Thanks to Alden and the PPM. Another term? I don’t think so. See ya!

        • Anonymous says:

You must have been dreaming over the past 4 years.  When Alden was in power, he did not go travelling all over the world with a large entourage.  People who have made messes of their own finances have been travelling over to China, Arabia, Greenland and as many far away places they could name on their tickets.  I met a UDP entourage in Miami Airport going on to England 1st class on BA.  There were two relevant politicians in that group, ebveryone else was educated backup tor our uneducated leader, who only tried to show the world that he could bring the country to our knees in 4 years and make any non-supporters starve and beg, which is how a lot of people are doing right now.  Alden did not carry the country into bankruptcy.  He saw the need for good schools and built one, which is operating for the eastern side of the island and he did not try to force the Communist Chinese down our throats like your glorious leader trie to do.  Wake and smell the BS that iscattered aroud us,

      • Anonymous says:

Exactly what experience does Woody Dacosta have besides running businesses to the ground? Remember Vivendi and other failures? Can his own family members put their heads on the chopping block for him? Do we really need the country to be put into near bankruptcy again?

  10. Peter Zuffrie says:

It is not easy to say tonight what the outcome will be in West Bay. One can get more accuracy after Nomination Day.

I believe that the result in West Bay will depend wholly on what Rolston and Cline have planned.

If they are able to get 2 good candidates to run with them, it is uncertain what will happen.

If Rolston and Cline do not get 2 good candidates to run with, the "Mac Machine" will roll over their opponents like a Sherman tank and, capture all 4 seats.

Tonight, here's what I am willing to predict:

    Mr Bush will be 1st Elected for West Bay;

    Capt Eugene will keep his seat;

    Capt Bryan will get more votes than hisother 2 PPM colleagues;

Rolston will be fined and will lose his driver's licence; and

Mr Bush will be charged before 22 May.

The outcome in West Bay really depends on what CG and Rolston can muster.

  11. RRP says:

Although I think there are some quality ppm candidates, all Alden has done for as long as i remember was to bash udp and now c4c. Nothing constructive comes out of this man’s mouth. Vote for quality candidates that can debate issues. We need MLAs that can listen to others’s ideas and points of view, and debate issues for the betterment of our country. Frankly I have not seen these qualities in Alden. It seems to be his way or no way. Maybe I don’t know him well enough, but I have been reading his views for 8 years now and listened to him on rooster every time he’s been on the show over the past year. Alden, please show me that you have these leadership qualities. Stop bashing others. You are effectively saying, vote for me because the rest are worst than me. That’s not good enough for me!

They may not be perfect, but they are honest and I like the fact that they tried to cover all the loop holes.  Its about time the West Bayers adopt the PPM way and stop being fooled by McKeeva and the UDP, the Party of Five and the C$C.  The PPM might had been over ambitious in their 4 years, but they were the party of doers of infrastructures and laws. 4 votes from me and more from my family members.  Keep it coming PPM, you have the solutions…you always do!!

Well said anonymous 16:14, I just want to add and remind the Caymanians of the Laws that PPM worked on that are now Laws of the land, and some of their achievements they made in the four years they Govern these three Islands.

      1. FOI (Freedom of Information)

      2. Anti Corruption Law

      3. The Bill of Rights

      4. The Constitution which is responsible for the other three Laws.

It is sad that the One Man, One Vote didn't made the list this time round, but if the Progressive wins the Election, the Caymanians would see it become part of the next Election, and hopefully the Progressive would add another Law to their name, and that would be the Conservation Law, which has been pending and played  with for far to long.

I never mind a Government spending money, what matters is what the Government spends it on. A perfect example of wreckless spending by any Government is the UDP, don't let me get started with the list of wastage of the people's money and bad deals. PPM only waste money on good things that would benefit everyone living in these Islands.

      Schools

      Roads

      Better Licence Department

      The New Government Building

      Improvement to the Infrastructure

and even improve the Education Curriculum

      and many more….

The people made a mistake and vote out a Government that was working for them, and traded them with a Government that work against them, now is the chance for the people of these Islands to rectify the error that was made in 2009.

How do we know that's the truth since the UDP refused to have those particular accounts (2008-2009) audited?

So happy to see this in West Bay! Wednesday night was a good evening listening to these men talk about what they bring to the table and what their plans are for West Bay.

PPM get out of WB —we had a enough of ur BS — when u had the majority–u don’t care about WB. Ur just power hungry– half ur so called team do not even live in WB– they live GT and should run against Alden– he can’t eve speak like he an educated man — PPM get out of WB — WB is for the people who live here and didn’t run off to town — I’m an independant voter –I will not vote for any PPM candidates

Same old garbage coming out of his mouth. … no ppm and udp… all independent I say, sick and tired of party politics.

4 the last 8years all we have heard from both parties who is better and putting each other down. I dont see any talk of crime the economy of jobs, just bit…ing who is better.

I.will vote formthe independents in GT. And if I dont feel comfortable with using all my vote I will not.

I want to hear the issues.
    CRIME
    EDUCATION
    ECCONOMY
    EMPLOYMENT

Not the past and who did or didnt do this or that.. move forward and think of the islands not your pockets.

I so can't wait for the PPM to be back in charge, we will bo so much better off with them than the UDP, then have so many solutions to all the problems caused by the UDP after the left the country in such good condition.

OK PPM, you spent the last 4 years dogging Mckeeva Bush and now he has been Ousted, now we need to hear solutions. So leave the UDP bashing behind and if you want get elected let the Caymanian people know.

WHAT THE H)&LL ARE YOU GOING TO DO  DIFFERENT IF YOU ARE ELECTED.

  23. Anonymou says:

I don't care how many offices the progressives have or what new names they call themselves unless they have some solutions to the country's problems then they are wasting the voters time.

Anonymous 13:44 I'm getting a little tired of people on here pressing The Progressive for solutions, why don't you ask C4C, the UDP and the so called Independents what are they solutions. Why single out one Party?  It makes no sense bashing on one Party, when you have other Candidates running for the Election. I'm sure the Progressive have solutions, you would soon see their Manifesto, get one when they are available, and have read, and then you can see the solutions or plans theyhave if they are elected as the next Government.

Too bad you are sick and tired of us asking what the PPM’s solutions are. Instead of bashing us for asking just respond fool! As I suspected, the PPM never has any solutions!

        • Live Free.... says:

Anonymous 12:36. who are you calling a fool? I have knowledge of what is going on in these Islands than what  you may think, so my advice to you is, go back under the rock that you came out from, because living under that rock , you don't know what is going on in these Islands, so I guess that would qualify you as the fool. Furher more, if I offended you in my last post when I said stop asking The Progressive for solutions, I have no apology for that. Because it's very bias to tramp on one Party  and not the other. If the people ask every Candidate that is running for the election the same questions, I would called that a level playing field, at the moment that is not the case.

You sound so arrogant like your PPM leader as if no one else knows anything but you! I too know plenty and stay abreast of what goes on so don’t come with that. Once again, WHAT ARE THE PPM’s SOLUTIONS? And I mean besides spending money we don’t have and bashing everyone else’s ideas. While I might not agree with everything McKeeva Bush did at least he was constantly coming up with ideas. That is how it is supposed to be. Private companies work that way too. You consider ideas and some work and some don’t. I will even give a vote to the C4C people over the useless PPM!

We shall now see if the West Bay voter in general has any sense at all. How many will still blindly vote for our first and worst premier who has led the country off a cliff? How many ministers of religion will still endorse him as they get another nation-building cheque? How many will be fooled by the last-minute separation of UDP Lite or anyone who supported and/or helped keep that man in charge of our country until they had no other option? Show us what you are made of and be The Republic once more.

Too bad the Progressives could not convince Tara Rivers to join their slate.

Hopefully our fellow Caymanians in West bay have had enough of being under the Bush and will step into the light come May 22nd!

    • Anonymous says:

If you believe Tara is so good for West Bay, why dont you vote her in at the next election, and get all of your friends and family to vote for her too.

    • Anonymous says:

The Progresives, Tara and Farrington are really on the same team, and their combined goal is to keep MacDicktater and his UDP cronies out of the LA……FOR ALL our sakes, work together guys.

    • Anonymous says:

Tara was lured by the promise of an independent team (i.e. party). Anyone else see the irony in that?

    • Anonymous says:

I agree with your sentiments. If Tara could have been convinced to join the Progressives in West Bay, they would have an excellent full slate of candidates.

If the Progressives are unable to find a fourth individual to join with them, Tara will probably get my fourth vote for West Bay electoral district.

    • Anonymous says:

Tara should join The Progressives now.

    any concrete policy proposals?????

    • Yup says:

Ask C4C, UDP and UDP – lite where their proposals are???

      • Anonymous says:

C4C=UDP=UDPLite, the proposals are all the same.

      • Anonymous says:

Their single most important solution, all of them , is to rid this country of the plague known as Mckeeva Bush.

    • Anonymous says:

I think the PPM's policy on corruption goes without even being said at this point.

    • Anonymous says:

YES!! Having a McKeeva-FREE Government from now on – how's that for the start of good policy making?

    • Anonymous says:

Probably more than Bush and Foolio could ever dream up, and a lot more realistic too (as opposed to UDP fantasy).

    • Anonymous says:

They will annouce them at their conference on Saturday and its open to all.

      • Anon says:

Where is it? I can’t wait to hear some concrete ideas from ppm. Every time I attended the meetings has been all about bashing their opposition. I have been disappointed so many times but I am willing to give them another chance.

        • Centrist says:

Thats what they said about Obama too! Oh, look who is President of the USA today! Why? His opponent also had few concrete ideas at the time, and the ones he did have were either unpopular or changed daily.  See any parallels (and I don't mean with the Progressives).

      • Anonymous says:

        yeah soon come…… zzzzz

they had 4 years….and offered nothing!

        • Anonymous says:

4 years as the Opposition, you idiot. The Opposition is not the govt. and therefore does not put forward policies.

          • Anonymous says:

only in cayman…everywhere else in the modern world, the oppposition will offer alternative policy proposals….

          • Anonymous says:

Then why do we need an opposition if they are going to do nothing..maybe they should take away there salaries….what do you think?

            • Anonymous says:

Ummm.. no, they perform the job of the Opposition, dimwit – to scrutinise and question govt. policies, legislation and hold them to account. Same as any Opposition has always done.

Speaking of lack of job performance why don't you propose taking away Capt. Eugene's salary (and pension)?

    • Baldric says:

Yeah – they will try to avoid getting concreted over by Mac.
