PNA focus fight on UDP

| 06/05/2013

rolstonpna (229x300).jpg(CNS): With just over two weeks to go before the general elections, the PNA candidates in West Bay are focusing the fight on their former UDP colleagues. Since taking to the hustings, the incumbent Cabinet members are concentrating their attack not just on the man they helped oust from office but the candidates running with him in the district, where for the first time in many years the result is far from certain. So far, both Cline Glidden and Rolston Anglin have said very little against the two independent candidates or the two running on the C4C ticket or even the PPM team but instead have attacked McKeeva Bush and his running mates for cowardice.

Anglin told a crowd in West Bay of around 200 people last week that Bernie Bush had told him that he believed he and his Cabinet colleagues had done the right thing when they voted with the opposition leader to oust the former premier from the country’s top political job during last December’s no confidence motion. Anglin went on to accuse Bernie Bush of running on the UDP ticket in the belief that he could get elected that way.

The new UDP West Bay hopeful has ran in several elections as an independent but despite managing to get almost 40% of the vote in the district in 2009 and more than 36% in 2005, Bernie Bush has persistently failed to make the top four in the district as a direct result of the power of the UDP in West Bay. Following Anglin and Glidden’s decision to help oust the UDP leader from office, Bernie Bush has now joined McKeeva Bush andCapt Eugene, as well as newcomer Velma Hewitt, in the hope that the continuing popularity of the former premier in the district will finally carry him to the Legislative Assembly.

Describing Bernie Bush as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”, Anglin said last week at the West Bay PNA meeting that the former Pirate’s Week director had admitted that he would run with his namesake as that way he could get elected. “That’s the type of person running with the UDP,” he added, telling the crowd to reject the UDP at the polls as none of them had the country’s interest at heart.

In an ironic twist, after some twelve years in the McKeeva Bush camp, Anglin accused those running on the UDP ticket of being cowards as he said Bush could only work with people who are intimidated and afraid of him. Imploring the people of the district to rid themselves of corruption and fear, he asked the people of West Bay to vote for him and Glidden and stop the “Jamaican style” intimidation that Bush and the UDP had brought to Caymanian politics.

He accused Bush’s supporters of scaring PNA supporters by coming to the meetings and writing names in books. “He has lost it,” the deputy premier said of his long-time political colleague. But headded that the people could count on him and Glidden, as well as the current premier and his Bodden Town running mates, to do the right thing when they were returned to office.

He said that all of the UDP candidates were running with Bush out of convenience and those were not the kind of people the district needed to represent them as they would not do the right thing if returned.

Accusing McKeeva Bush of refusing to follow due process while in office, which has resulted in high levels of unemployment, he said the $10 million of tax payer’s money Bush planned to spend on putting people to work clearing the roadside would do nothing more than make people dependent on him, which he said had been the UDP leader’s long time position. Anglin said that when the people were dependent on Bush, he could always count on their vote.

“We must take Cayman back,” he said, warning people not to follow the UDP call to vote straight as he said that would be voting in the people who fear Bush and line up blindly behind him. He implied other UDP members had supported the decision to remove Bush from office but at the eleventh hour were too afraid and went back to support him.

Anglin also accused Bush of dirty politics and personal attacks in an effort to maintain his West Bay stranglehold. But the West Bay incumbent warned that if it continued then he too could reveal many things about the UDP leader that he would not want public.

With the result in West Bay in real question for the first time in many years, Anglin and Glidden are hopeful that they can still keep their seats, not least because the traditional opposition vote to McKeeva Bush will be split, cancelling the PPM, C4C and independent candidates out. The question will be if Glidden and Anglin can poll enough votes without the pull of Bush, pushing out two of the UDP candidates in what looks to be a race between the new UDP and the former UDP.

Does anyone know if CG is still a US citizen? He mentioned that his passport expired but I don’t know what that has to do with his US citizenship.

Has anyone been able to determine the identity of the woman that was in the vehicle with Mr. Anglin the night that he was arrested? Also, can someone please let me know what story he decided in the end was closest to the truth(wet road, dog food, etc.)?

    • Anonymous says:

I reckon it was a combination of all of them but if I had to choose I'd probably opt for the dog food one as it would show Rolston as a caring person. Maybe his dog came into the coversation with the woman and he suddenly thought  "Hey, I need to get Roxie his food. Let me do a quick U turn here now" and then it all went horribly wrong from then on in. Only Rolston himself can say what really happened, or his date, but she took off, of course.

    • Anonymous says:

The truth is he was trying to get the poor lady home to feed her hungry dog and the road was wet, OK? In the bible it's called being a good samaritan. And of course you know what happens to good samaritans in the bible, don't you. By the way, would you please put a leash on your inqisitiveness? "Has anyone been able to determine the identity of the woman" …sheesh, you wish it was you, don't you? Find something constructive to do with your time already. I mean, really. Are you his wife or somethin? Goodness gracious. Can't a man help a friend feed his dog..I mean her dog, on a wet road in peace anymore? Shut up and go feed your dog or something.

So I will remain respectful and address the Hon Minsiter Anglin as he should.  However, help me to understand why the Hon. Minister feel the need to degrade and discriminate Jamaican Politics by reffring to "Jamaican Style" intimidation –  I never thought much of him other than a drunkard what example is that as Minister of Education.

At least Rollie & Cline have shown up for the debates. Mac is once again threatening people including the Chamber of Commerce. The man has no shame, and you have to wonder if he feels he doesn't need to debate because he has already secured his votes in another way. Either that or the people who he knows will vote for him can't spell debate.

Why do you have to insult the voters in West Bay? Please show them a little respect.

Trust me, if I had only two options UDP and PNA, I would rather Rolston (the PNA alliance) in power than to have UDP's McKeeva Bush in power for another 4 years. So to those who are condemning Rolston and calling West Bayers to not vote PNA, PPM, nor C4C, be careful it don't backfire and you end up with Bush!  Just sayin… give me a PNA purple shirt anyday, but to have Bush in again!

these 2 groups represent what a Government should not be. I CAN believe that some people in westbay are so gullable and naive to believe rolston and cline's 'well ya see wha happen' explanations. Those of you that are listening to these non sensicle EXCUSES need to grow back bones and stand up for Ethics and Responsible Governance

PPM have all there ducks in a row across the board thats where my 4 votes will happily go.

Gonna have my own party that night especially when Rolston gotta look a job!!

    • Anonymous says:

Just in case any one you didn't know….Rolston Anglin is a qualified accountant and was one of the 7% that passes all parts of the CPA exams the first try!!!  Therefore, I would say that he would have no problem finding a job that pays him much more than he is earning now.  Also, his personal life has little to do with the job he is doing in improving our education system!!!  Most of the candidates have already publicly acknowledged that he is doing a great job so why are we going out of our way to talk about petty stuff??  We better be glad that we have someone like that to represent us and stop the hating!!  Continue to do the good job Rolston and CG!!  Jamaicans knows exactly what he is referring to when he speaks of "Jamaican style" politics and they don't want Cayman to become like Jamaica politically so I know they will do the right thing on May 22nd!!!

  9. Anonymous says:

I actually believes that these 2 guys have good intentions, but I wish they did not focus on McKeeva and the wrong he has done. We need them to focus more on what they plan on doing, should they get back in. Rollie and CG we applaud you for finally having the backbone to pull away from the tyrant, even though you were a few years late and a lot of money wasted or los, you did the right thing. I personally know you two guys and your intentions are good and I know you can work with anyone of the other candidates.  My wish is that you do not link up ever again with McKeeva Bush.  He might had taught you guys the ropes and I am sure by now you would know the right way of doing things. Please, I beg you guys, just do the right thing for Country. Stop the hand out mentality, stope making our people lazy, stop the Welfare promotion and follow the right processes and become Statemen of our LA and not Garrison Politicians.

I am very disappointed in Rolston to say the very least!!

Cline Glidden Jr isn't any better he been using Mac all these years too but I believe he shows more respect to his family  XXXX.

Please ask yourselves this question. Why would someone in a position like Rolston's take so long to reveal someone or something if it was so unethical or otherwise? Especially knowing that if Mac or anyone else was doing so much wrong that it may have been costing the country coffers funds it couldn't afford.

This is the kind of polictian I have no faith in…. only willing to show and tell when they are on the campaign trail weeks away from elections.

Don't forget that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and Rolston, you have plenty skeletons in your closet dangling.

Alot of your West Bay constituents are disappointed in you, you have let us down bad but will continue praying for you and your family.

Why would anyone be so fool fool to vote for candidates who only use their political platforms to mudsling. Whats worse is they obviouslyhavent heard that if you spit in the sky, it will fall in your eye!!! Rolston  and CG are only empowering the opposing candidates by their insistence on digging up bones and throwing mud pies. i suggest they chalk the past up to a loss and move forward  cause we're in the last inning unnuh donkeys…. and its batters up!!!

Cayman has no time to waste with politicians who only want to argue and row amongst themselves, and get back at this and that one, instead of working to get something done for the good of the country.

Vote to move the country forward Cayman, not to keep the economy in stagnation and "leaking" money thru lawsuits and gaudy monstrosities onto the politician himself.

Name calling like he s recently done and taking advantage of his former leaders political misfortunes will never make him a leader worthy of premiership!

Weird, because Cline and Rolston has no problem collecting their paychecks and "lining up blindly behind" Mckeeva up until a few months ago when they realised his goose was cooked. They're just like the Italians in the WWII, switching sides when they realise their days are numbered. Not somebody i would like running my country.

    • Anonymous says:

The only reason Rollie anCG upset with Mac, is that he walked across the aisle to the opposition side and left the Lonely Five  to have to fend for themselves.

They thought that they were going to oust him and theUDP would remain in tact.  But McKeeva is crafty like a fox and he left them with thier mouths hanging open that day in the LA.

Now CG and Rollie jealous that Bernie and Velma are running on the platform that they were to run on. They made their greed of power mash up a good ting.

SALARIES should be the first priority for all new and re-elected members:

Whith all the economic problems our country is facing: All new and re-elected members should lead by example. Example: Obama donated to his oun goverment 20% of his salary. Not his civil cervants but from his own salary.

If the peoples are strugling to find a job to keep one or to make their low salaries then our new elected goverment should start by contributing to the PEOPLES donating part of the high salary being paid to them to protect and serve our country and the peoples.

That could help balance our economy and help the poor and the most needed mostly the Caymanians. Instead of like in most of the elections: Candidates gets elected and once in office we never hear or see of them and for most of the time they spend as much as four years colecting the high pay check while the country is in debth and they are just there holding a position and not contributing in much or nothing, just attacking each other and arguing or disagreeing with all the other members.

Maybe is they are monitored more closelly and evalueted on what is expected of them maybe then we would not have those problems and they would all serve or not serve us accordingly.

Good luck for the new elections in four more years of trying and learning. We should all remember remuneration normally comes with experience, good service and best results.

    May the best be elected.

Don't hold your breath on salary cuts, they claimed they would all do that already while everyone else's got slashed and they increased living expenses.

The first thing to be cut should be their abilility to double dip on their pensions.

    • peter milburn says:

I have been preaching about the salaries for months and will say this one more time.I agree with you that all and sundry need to take a pay cut but here is my spin on this. The present MLA's (for arguments sake) are making CI$100,000 per year multiply this times the present number in the house 15 =CI$1,500,000 Now follow me This time around we will have 18 so to make it balance out we now divide CI$1500000 and it comes out to about CI$83,000 The same goes for the Cabinet members.Since there will be 7 instead of 5 then it means that each  member will have less work to do as the porfolios will be divided even more so therefore less pay for them.We cannot afford to add 3 full salaries for the new members of the House NOR should we pay the Cabinet members for doing less work That is the formula that MUST be used to calculate their salaries. The figures used above are just for making things easier to calculate as I know that Cabinet members make substatially more than the regular MLAs but this is my solution for the past members that in my mind were grossly overpaid especially since they only met maybe 6 times(and that is being generous) on average per year.My solution for the new Govt is to have at least House sittings once a month and this will speed up the process of law making that is as slow as Molasses going up a hill.We need to get on with the business of running the country and must stop all this time wasting around issues if this does not work with certain members.Members that do not attend for whatever reason should be docked their salaries for that meeting or better still that month UNLESS they have a valid excuse(just like a kid in school)Our past Govt spent so much time doing other things just think of how much money we could have saved for non meetings and non attendence.Add to all this some of them have other business interests so that makes the salaries even more wacky I am sure I will get many thumbs down for this blog but take some time to think about what am have tried to say and see how this could and will save something which can then be used for more books for our schools and much needed food for our children in those schools.

Oddly enough, historically there has always been a certain amount of reluctance towards politicians relinquishing any part of their own earnings in tandom with requiring that others take a pay cut. It seems true and clear that UDP does indeed want the people dependent on them, and are counting on that system of dependence to secure peoples votes and support.

It is also clear that PNA (former UDP) even though they did something right by ousting the former premier, were all a part of UDP's systems / schemes for the past decade and more. So I cannot in good conscience believe much in PNA as being the solution to "move Cayman forward".

And though I feel there are some good people on the C4C ticket, I'm afraid that supporting them will serve to split the vote in UDP's, and possibly PNA's favour.

Therefore I'm voting and supporting PPM and Independents! At least I know where the money went…scools, roads, new Govt. Office building. And they also spent their energies on "moving Cayman forward" with with new contitution, FOI, Anti Corruption Commission.

Think of how much we would not know if FOI was not in place! And Ezzards drop box has also certainly been a conduit to shed much needed light!

Wow!  So let me paraphrase this story.  Rolston is accusing Mac's running mates of blindly following him to get elected and saying that the only people Mac wants around are ones that are intimidated by him and/or afraid of him.  Why does this sound familiar?  Oh yeah, 3 people have been elected on this basis before (for those keeping score at home that would be Rolson, Cline and Eugene).  I guess it takes one to know one.  Rolston, don't stop the side show now were just about to the best part.  Let's have all of the details Mac wouldn't want public so the voters in West Bay have all of the facts to make an informed decision.  I'm guessing this is just a bit of grandstanding since anything that would be embarrassing to Mac would have to be embarrassing to all of his former UDP colleagues as well.

  39. Integrity says:

With this election so competitive all of the candidates need to pull out all of the stops and dig much deeper into the details and history of our political past. If the PNA know things that have happened they should expose them, not just insinuate it.

For example all the hidden projects held close for future benefits. What about all the rumors that everyone knows but nobody documents? Now is the time for change and change starts by coming clean.

All of the special deals and arrangements need to be exposed so that we never have them again. Then we can start over and do it right. Is it possible that Mr. Bush is still intimidating his opposition?

The only thing we need to fear is fear itself. Let pull the plug once and for all. Talk, tell and show, otherwise we will be right back where we where. It’s a tough fight but: No guts, No glory. Come on this is your job, make me proud of Cayman again.
