Gunmen raid Savannah home
(CNS) Updated: A group of ten people living in and visiting a house in Savannah endured a frightening ordeal early Wednesday morning when four masked gunmen entered the home around 1am and robbed the householders and their guests. Police said the men, who were all dressed in camouflage clothing, carrying black handguns, and wearing masks and gloves, got into the house and ordered the ten occupants to lie face down. They then tied some of the occupants' hands and robbed the house of money and jewellery before making their escape, after engaging in a tustle with at least one of the victims. Police said that no one was injured during the home invasion and short descriptions of three of the men were given by the witnesses.
One of the suspects had hairy arms and a brown complexion; he was about 5ft 7inches tall, slim built with Caymanian accent. The victims described another suspect as short, dark, with a big mouth, medium built, also with a Caymanian accent; and a third was said to be short with brown skin.There was no description for the fouurth man but he was said to have also spoken with a Caymanian accent.
The RCIPS is appealing to anyone who may have information on this robbery to report to any of the police stations or call 800-TIPS (8477) or 949-7777.

Yes things in Cayman are financially straining right now, especially for the unemployed but I do not think that just the hope of gaining some money for food is the primary motive behind these robberies. Think- if they are so broke then how is it they afford matching camo gear and guns!
It seems to me that it is the sheer pleasure (for lack of a better word in a lazy twisted mind) of inflicting fear and control over victims that drives them to this act. There is alot more that can be said but I definately think our young people need to be taught values of respect, integrity and positive ambition. Life is not a movie!! Then again that training starts with the family and parenting and today sorry to say, there's alot lacking there!
Many Caymanians are out jobs and cannot get jobs due to misleading judgements in this community. Families are to be fed if we were placed in a situation that we cannot get a job to feed our household or ourselves and theres no one there to help. The only source is selling ilegal drugs or/and robbery. Government always speak they are trying to do better for Caymanians but reality, they are struggling. These 'Caymanian accents' you notice they do not target caymanians but they target island visitors or outsiders because obviously they are not struggling when they come to the Island. They are being offered great big salary, while caymanians struggle. How is it that an outsider and local can be doing the same job same degrees, same level of expierence BUT yet an outsider is making 85% more than a local? The local struggles to take care family household but an outsider can comfortable take care his household including spouse. Therefore at the end of the day Caymanians are being treated differently, and Caymanians will take revenge and take what is needed. These Caymanian accent often do not hurt outsiders they just take what they can to make a living. This is part of life. I'm sure it would have been worst if they were living in honduras, jamaica, USA etc. just be thankful blood do not shed everytime this happens. It is said before there is peace, theres blood to be shed.

The above post just angers me beyond words! First, if a Caymanian is out of work- go find some! Lose the pride, beat down the pavement and go get a J-O-B!! There are jobs to be had in Cayman, but they may not be up to your liking. Go do landscaping, dishwashing, serve fast food, housekeeping etc. Do NOT resort to crime as the easy way out and blame people that ARE working for your laziness!
Secondly, people who visit have probably saved a year in advance to come spend time on your lovely island. What gives you the right to ASSUME that these people are rich and that you can rob them because you, once again, are too lazy to go find yourself a J-O-B!! I scrimp every week JUST so I can go on a holiday. My cell phone is a flip, my tv is not a flat-screen, my car is over 10 years old, but I do go to work every stinking day so I can afford to go on a holiday! I must be rich, though, right, poster?
I was out of work in my field for 8 months 3 years ago. Do you know what I did? I cried for a week and then I got myself 3 crappy jobs and I worked them morning until late night just so I could put food on the table and pay my mortgage! I did not go sell illegal drugs or go rob anyone. The thought didn't even cross my mind. I lowered my pride and busted my a## and hated every minute of it, but there was food on my table and clothes on my back and I had a warm house to go home to at night.
Rob someone because you are not working. EXCUSES! Sell drugs because you are not working. EXCUSES! Pick yourself up and go get a J-O-B or 2. Have some pride in yourself and for your family. So sick of hearing "out of work, gonna go rob" crap!
Very flawed arguement. It has been pointed out many times that most businesses would much rather employ Caymanians. However finding one who wants to work to normal standards now is almost impossible. We employ many wonderful Caymanians now, but those currently coming for interview, if they turn up, demonstrate some pretty strange ideas on working. They want to do what they want, including setting their own hours, which rarely resembles what we advertise for. I agree that crime is related to unemployment, however government needs some programmes to teach a lot of the unemployed how to interview and on attitudes to work.
Even though I know some of the things you say might be true, you can't try and justify this type of behavior. It will only be a matter of time before blood begins to shed. There was a time with these other countries you mentioned use to be safe and it all started to go downhill just like it is starting here. You rob without bloodshed now then later you kill someone who fights back then later you kill regardless of the situation when you rob. We can't condone this is our community by using comparisons to justify. The inequality in the work place needs to be sorted by the people we put in charge.
So now breaking in someones home is excusable and justified if you are out of work and hungry. Let see how you feel when it you that get robbed.

You Sir are absolutely correct. There are people out there who know who these criminals are and can provide valuable information. These people have a moral and civic duty to come forward. If they don't they enable the criminals. Sometimes it isn't easy and takes a lot of courage to step to the line and do the "right" thing.

Somethings that should be happening in regard to law enforcement are not happening, that's clearly the case. It is a blatant absurdity that this kind of thing can happen in a country the size of a ranch with a tiny number of individuals fitting the profiles we keep reading about time and time again. Our present law enforcement, certainly in terms of detection, is woefully inadequate to tackle the task at hand. Some have suggested bringing in experts from the U.S (I'd like to see that net broadened to include the likes of Israel and others) to help identify this small group of perpetrators, and that is something I would like to see happen, and sooner rather than later. We are running out of time, my friends.

One other thing that I’ve always wondered about, why are the mugshots of ALL convicted criminals from murder to petty theft not published in the media. Is there some ridiculous reason why this is so? Should the public not have a right to see what these scum look like while they walk among us???
All I always seem to read or get from the RCIP is what they can't do or that they can't do things alone. Why don't we talk for a change about what it is they actually can do?
The problem is that they have let things slip for way too long and now everything has spun out of control.
Perhaps if the police could be seen out and about enforcing the laws on a daily basis, more people would actually have faith in them and feel that they are indeed interested in their jobs, want to do their job well and mean business. Maybe then some people would feel more comfortable to come forward with some information.
For example, have you ever heard about anyone having been arrested for aiding prisoners who have escaped throughout the years? Are they really not able to narrow down who assists from the inside of HPM Northward and who are aiding on the outside?
When you see police turning a blind eye every single day when people committ substantial traffic offenses in front of police officers passing by and they pretend they didn't see it, do you really expect that people will come forward with information that could put their own life or the life of their family in danger?
I think first the police must work REALLY hard on proving their capabilities and perhaps then the community will be able to have once again faith in the RCIP.
I have been here a long time and watched the island evolve. This type of crime must be beaten down hard now. Somebody knows something and those that suspect their friends or family must pipe-up. Our society has historically functioned well because perpetrators were found out quickly, chased down and punished promptly. We can ill afford to let this type of thing become more regular as it has lately. I already hear talk and nervousness among established would-be investors. The culture in Cayman – the generation that runs Cayman is not made of these (criminal) people. We need to stamp this out and step-up to significantly beat this type of activity back. Random raids, search on suspicion; do whatever it takes to instill confidence in those who come here that the people of Cayman care about this and will simply not stand for it. Tax advantage and a tollerant crime-free society are all we really offer. Loose either of those two pillars and we have lost our advantage.
Agreed! Crime stoppers needs to put a $10,000 tip off reward leading to the arrest of one of these thugs. Sorry, but harboring and festering this type of criminal activity must end. The problem is we are now working on second and third generation gang members and thugs. In any event the descriptions provided time and time again by the RCIPS are actually not descriptions but rather the ramblings of sleepy toddlers! Please give better descriptions or refrain from stating anything at all.

So the witness provided the description, who I imagine was more than just a bit scared when all this was going on. So you can blame the victim if you want to or you could stop being a moron and appreciate the circumstances in which the offender was seen and subsequently described to the police.
The police can only give out what they are told by the witnesses/victims. Would you remember much to give out a detailed description if this happened to you…..think you would be more terrified to notice too much!

We need more crime fighters and less traffic police that only know how to issue tickets. For such a small community, why can't the police presents be felt? Is this just a salary each month or you join the force to protect and serve?. Whether the robbers have Cayman accent with a big mouth is not helpful, because anyone can imitate any accent, this means of description is rubbish.
What traffic police are you talking about? I would like to know where they are. I drive twice a day between Newlands and GT and I can go for months without seeing a police car in action!

Why RCIPS won't ask for help from professionals in US? The simply are not capable to do anything- from properly processing minor trafficaccidents to catching a SMALL group of armed criminals terrorozing the island.
The RCIP need to watch COPS and Drugs Inc. to see how it's done. The other night my hubby and I were watching Drugs Inc. which featured drugs, gangs and crime in Jamaica. He made a suggestion that any1 wishing to join the RCIP should first have to spend 6 months policing in Kingston and be paid the same salary as them in Jamaican dollars. Now, while this could prove useful in toughening them up we also realized that no1 would want to be a cop here if that was a requirement. It was rough man! The police have it so easyhere compared to stuff I've seen in neighboring countries, Central America, USA etc….
And we are talking about the island size of a Texas ranch and 450 police people allegedly in charge of its peace. It is simply impossible not to find them if one is really looking. 50,000 people living in Grand Cayman less all women, children, most expats, minus local men who are old or don't fit the description. How many left? Now divide that amount to 450- not a needle in a haystack. It is impossible not to know (with this math ) who those people are.
Eliminate the expats eh? Convenient.

The time is now for people to be observant of their sorroundings and if people are in your area who dont seem to have any llegitimate reason or vehicles or trucks unexpectedly are parking or going through your area continuosly , you should take full description of the vehicle, color, model, licence plate and details of the driver(s) etc
It is only with the paticipation of the citizens that we will assist in stemming the tide of crime. While the plice department could conceivably become inundated with calls, if one life or one family at a time is saved from theseincursions, then we will be getting somewhere. This may also be a signal that more staff are needed, not just numbers, but trained crime solving Police ooficers.

What does a statement about pro gun rights have to do with KKK/racism. I see some other genius made a comparison to Trayvon Martin as well. So if you feel like you should be able to have the choice to protect yourself with a firearm your a racist and if your pro gun control your not??? We have some of the strictest gun laws in the entire world and yet the criminals have and use them often. The police are janitors, they come and clean up after something happens, and not very well as evidenced by the lack of arrests and more importantly convictions. And these are the people you keep hoping will protect and take care of you. How's that working out? Me personally, I would prefer that nobody have guns, but that's not reality. I would prefer that the police would actually catch and convict these criminalsand get them off the street and others wouldn't be tempted to commit crimes, yet that isn't reality. So maybe I would like to have the option to actually protect myself and my family, or maybe I could just keep hoping and begging someone will do it for me, after all I wouldn't want to be a racist.

Goodness, and there I was thinking that home invasions happened in countries that allowed its citizens to be armed.
Evidently this an Island wide issue…if we dont put our feet down as a community and DEMAND better or we will continue to live in fear. Sooner or later this will also become Worldwide News equalling more folks leaving and less visitors. Most importantly our kids are being affected mentally every day by this to the the point where it will become the norm making it much easier for them to make poor choices later down the line.
Hold Government responsible for the promises they made during election. I believe battling crime was one of those promises. Some heads will need to roll in order for us to be able to move forward and not be stuck doing the same old thing and expect different outcomes. Thanks to the internet, this is already worldwide news. I remember when I first started travelling to Cayman and the biggest news event was someone driving drunk thru someone's watermelon patch. I used to be so impressed with how low the crime rate was and how much peace and tranquility could be found in one spot. Come on, Cayman! The island and the people are better than this!

The police is supposed to uphold the law EVERY SINGLE DAY. Not once in a while during Christmas Holidays on a drunk driving prevention! People complain on this blog constantly how they are witnessing offenses every day, yet nothing ever changes.
So what do you expect if you live in a country where you witness every day that the law can be broken and nothing will happen? Well, there are some fools like us who make an honest living and follow the regulations and laws, but then there is an increasing amount of fuckers who say to themselves "Hey – who can I rob today and make a week worth of salary in about 10 minutes"?
RCIP – get of your ass and do what you are paid to be doing instead of playing politricks within your dept.
Think it's time to sharpen up all machetes, re-lock, re-load, be alert, and be ready to fight for your lives, and protect your families' people. Keep your houses, sheds and cars LOCKED UP at all times, and invest in some home security. Get some kind of self defense training, and be ready to use it.
It's so unfair that these LOW LIFES can invade people's personal space, and sense of security like that, and 9 times out of 10 get away with it. (Yes, they are low lifes, because most of the people unemployed today, could have had work when the economy was better, and chose not to work!) Guess what? I chose to work hard (albeit part-time) from the early age of 12 – to help my Mum put me through private school. At the tender age of 33, hard work hasn't killed me yet!!! Life is all about choices. If you choose not to work, and come to break into my house, I choose to defend it and will do my best to break your face.
And although I wouldn't encourage anyone to go out there and act like Rambo or anything – if you are alert and ready and can surpise your attacker – you have the upper hand! Human reaction to being frightened works like a charm. Come up with some creative noise makers around doors and windows, if that doesn't scare them off – then be prepared to give them an ass whooping before they even get through the window/door etc! That fella in Savannah sure showed his intruder what time it was. Bet he won't rob again.
But seriously speaking, how much could you really have done to defend yourself against FOUR armed men?? Keeping a cool head and cooperating is the best protection you can give yourself and your family in situation like that and the best chance of coming out alive and unhurt. Things can be replaced but lives can not. God help our beloved Cayman Islands! I pray that these four are found and brought to justice quickly!
Except when they end up in Northward they usually escape a few times every few years. Not a very promising outcome is it? The island needs a clean sweep! Get it??? Clean sweep. Back in the day we could count these type of criminals on one hand. Today? we have tons in each district.

Look at our little island and what it has come to with the worlds largest police service per capita and cameras and helicpters to match it. Wow! and public safety and law and order thrown out the window and government run by the incompetent illiterate and corrupt.
Cayman is now in an age where home invasions by armed robbers are increasing. Yet the Police are bent on restricting homeowners from owning firearms or even pepper spray to protect themselves. Disgusting!
The RCIP are not a functional policing entity. Patrols are non exsistant, response times are slow, and investigations often bring nothing of substance to arrest a conviction within the courts. The criminals rule the streets and tue common man is forced to live in his own home with fear of being armed home invaded and in order to defend himself and family, he must engage in hand to hand combat as the Commissioner of Police will not allow as a rule a firearm license to protect one’s home. He will not arm his own Patrol men nor should he when you examine the caliber of personal he has under his employ. All of the millions wasted on CCTV and they are not helping crime detterent nor investigation. Mr. Bostock and Mr. BUSH need to answer what was and is the purpose of these CCTVs as the cost is extreme. How many incidents have they helped in as we can count from media reports that they have served no purpose in. The Cayman Islands is being pushed into a criminal zone. I cannot fathom how anyone thought it was a good idea to renew Mr. BAINES.

My guess is…Boy Scouts…c'mon…why is it whenever someone commits a crime wearing camouflage clothes, everyone assumes they have some sort of military training?? These guys weren't trained..they had surprise and force on their side…that's not to say that they haven't commited robberies before, but to say that had "training" is stretching it a bit…
