Cinema gets go ahead for late Sunday night showings

| 19/11/2013

(CNS): Changes to the Cinematograph (Amendment) Rules, 2013 passed in the Legislative Assembly on Monday will now allow the cinema to show movies until midnight on Sundays instead of having to stop at 9pm, facilitating an extra show. Financial Services Minister Wayne Panton, who also has responsibility for the Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI), which is now dealing with all forms of business licensing, said that amendments to the regulations also clarified the licence structure and both changing and increasing fees, which will see a minor increase to government coffers of $3,000 from the owners of the only cinema on the islands at Camana Bay.

Panton said the fee was being increased from $1,000 per annum to $1,500 and that the fee was per screen and not per movie house. He told his legislative colleagues, who backed the amendments, that more changes would be coming to the regulations in order to standardize age-specific censoring in line with the MPEA regulations in the US.

The minister added that the DCI was continuing to review the entire licensing regime for local business with a view to improving the administrative functions and services to the commercial community.

I find it interesting in the light of the many reports of increased violence and crime, comments on articles such as this one argue for bringing Cayman into the 21st century by the showing of movies on Sunday, keeping bars open past midnight on Saturday, and the dismissing of Christian values. Whether movies are shown on Sunday night is of little significance.  But, the comments this article generated are concerning to me.  As a frequent visitor to your wonderful country, my family and I have long admired the low crime rate, friendly atmosphere and overall class and politeness of the Cayman people.  Is Cayman perfect?  No, but it has been far better than most places.  From my limited outsider's perspective, moving into the 21st century is not about trying to emulate the misguided folly of the surrounding nations, but it is about addressing real issues such as trash management, implementing a recycling program, improving the infrastructure and prioritizing quality education, building a thriving economy for all, and the list goes on and on.  Walking away from sound moral values and Christianity and promoting the latest Hollywood glorification of violence and immorality are not recipes for success (judging from history and the state of other "progressive" nations).  To be clear, movies on late Sunday nights are not the problem, nor the solution.  But, walking away from the foundations of your country will perhaps sooner than later bring the Cayman Islands down to the level of its neighbors.  When we promote immorality, view violence and reject the sound moral principles of Christianity, there should be little surprise that people become mis-directed and crime increases.  As a result, our efforts turn from progress to damage control.

Movies theaters will soon be a thing of the past within the next 5 years; or even earlier. With today’s fiber technology (fiber becoming more to many of the Cayman homes now and by 2016/17 all home will be fiber ready from speeds from average 25Mbps to 1Gig), MGM, Disney, Poly-tech & Century 21 is in the work now for this business making opportunity. This will change the face on how we go to the movies. It will be the biggest changes from Drive-Ins theaters of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s; when this kicks off from the big movies giants. It’s started already, but the premium or the rights to watch new movies will cost a bit more. But members will have a discounted price. It be like paper view!

So the focus for government coffers will be aim at the ICTA to wipe the local telecoms for some extra case.

    • Shane, come back! says:

“Century 21" ? Real Estate now selling movies? 😉

“paper view!" ?? Lol, I know you meant Pay-per-view…

What demon language is it you speak?

If the big movie houses receive/are offered more money from the theater chains for the rights to show their films, it's going to stay as is for a while longer then 5 years.

Eventually, sure, movies will be available (as is the case now with limited releases as a test trial) right to your home on release day, via Internet. And no, I'm not going to pay $30+ for a single, new movie release just to watch it at home (as is in very limited trials now).

But it'll get cheaper over the next several years. So until then, movie theater's are where it's at, especially for the big budget movies, can't beat a giant screen and sounds…and crying babies, talking teens/kids, oxtail dinner smells (mmmm), etc.

Its about damn time! i'm so sick and tired of the dictatorship from the so called "religious" trying push their beliefs down everyone's throat and telling everyone how to live their life, what to do and where to go on a Sunday! Hurry open the supermarkets on a Sunday as well and please allow the clubs to stay open past midnight on a Saturday night – cha!!

    And a w……… or two?

    • Anonymous says:

We have those already.  They're called local bars.

    • Hoping for better days says:

Strip-clubs exist in Cayman, yes, the good ol' christian country we are. They exist and clearly you are just not that important enough to have received an invite. Alot goes on here that the public are clueless about…

The amount of dirt and corruption that goes on here on this 24 mile long island is disgusting.

Just remember this, when the sun goes down the demons come out to play. 😉 (FACT)

Can we have different screenings for people who beleive talking to the screen is appropriate and those who don't.

The move theater seems to select movies on the basis of a target demographic of zombies and the lobotomized.

  11. Anonymous says:

can you please also ban 2 year olds from watching R rated movies as well – regardless of their parents. It's ridiculous that a kid/babies should be exposed to some of the violence shown on the screens. The parents should also be fined IMHO!

    • Anonymous says:

Can we also ban overbearing, outdated, Christian values from modern-day society.  It's ridiculous that sane people need to have their lives ruined by the demands of the mentally ill.

    • Knot S Smart says:

Can we also please make a law against overeating jerk chicken?

  12. Anonymous says:

That's great, but can we please be allowed to watch R rated movies on Sunday, too?!

Thank you, The adults of Grand Cayman

But the baby Jesus won't like it.

      • SSM345 says:

Did cinema's and movies exist when baby Jesus was born? Nope, they had things like Gladiator games. Can we bring back Gladiator games on Sundays? Perhaps we could put the thugs ruining this island into the ring to see who really is a "bad man"?

      • Jesús says:

Hey now, speak for yourself, my son.

    • Anonymous says:

Wow! Glad to see that others feel they're being discriminated against watching an "R" rated movie on a Sunday also. This is the stupidest thing I've ever witnessed here other than grocery stores being closed on a Sunday!  That's because people don't want to work but complain they don't have any way of making money. And, of course, their bosses not wanting to work either. Let people have a choice!!

  13. Anonymous says:

Only in Cayman would anyone think about regulating movie hours. The whole concept is stupid.

  14. Anonymous says:

    This is good news.

Now we just have to work on the supermarket Sunday shopping and the "no dancing" after midnight on a Saturday law.

That should bring us into the 21st century.

It is a shame that this chain refuses to show any movies with any chalenging themes.  It has failed to screen any movie that has pro-gay content since it opened.

It probably the backlash from all the so called "Christians" that they would have to put up with……….remember the crap that young lady tried to pull with the last Adam Sandler movie being shown? Now imagine what would happen if Broke Back Mountain 2 was played.

Or the protests about "The Golden Compass" which went along the lines of "This movie has has the anti-religion themes of the books removed to imporve box office prospects, but going to the movie might encourage children to read the other books in the series"  Which was basically a campaign against allowing children to read and think for themselves.

Good news or bad news?! Potentially good news for those of us without kids who want to go see a movie without being stuck next to the Caymanian woman who refuses to get a babysitter and brings her 4 kids (all under the age of 6) to a horror movie… but bad news because we all know she'll still show up!

But then there is that moment when the kids get the XXXX scared out of them and we all turn and laugh at her bad parenting skills.

There should be a law banning talking in the movies, whether it's on a social cell call or just shooting the breeze and high fiving the bredrins. ….happens every time!

      • Cayman Concern says:

Next time baby mamma brings all 4 toddlers, please call the police and social services. It is not just poor parenting to subject these toddlers to R rated sex ans violence, it seems to be a bloody training course!

Knowing Northward, the two of them that are in jail would probably get a day release if they really wanted to see a movie.  They could then post a review on Facebook.
