Public urged to help ESO with household data update

| 22/05/2014

(CNS): The Economics and Statistics Office is asking the public to co-operate with its staff who will be going door to door over the next few months to update the Cayman Islands Household Register. The survey will begin on Monday May 26 and run for three months until 29 August. This is the first time since the 2010 Census that a full update of households will be conducted.  Trained enumerators will visit every dwelling unit listed in the Census register, as well as newly constructed residential homes that are not already listed, to determine if they are occupied. Marco Archer, the minister of finance for economic development explained why the data is needed.

“It is important for policy makers to be informed from household statistics,” he said. “I am urging the public to cooperate with this statistical activity which will be the basis for selecting households for future surveys such as the labour force surveys.”

ESO officials said they will also be upgrading its data collection process through the use of tablets this time around as they asked for the continues cooperation from the community

“We thank them anew in advance for their support this year,”said ESO Director Maria Zingapan.

She added that ESO staff members will be carrying identification and she advised concerned community members to always ask for the field workers to present their IDs before providing key information.

    Dear Marco,

    What does this crap cost?

    Yours

Someone who lies on the survey

Surely in this day and age (and CIG touting "E-Govt.") there are more efficient and less intrusive ways to do this!

I enjoy their visits. I hope the results are not too badly skewed by me telling them how much I would like to earn instead of how much I really earn.

This time do not assume everyone adheres to a religion or other superstitions.  Have a "none" choice.

Just say you don't know 20 times and send them on their way.

Will these ESO employees be showing up with a clean Police Clearance at my door?  I'd like to know who is coming in my home and taking inventory of all my possessions.

come on people, we're trying to build a better nation,,,,,,let's cooperate…

They need to know how much more they can squeeze out of us to give to the wealthy.

Why is it "important for  policy makers" to know how much money I make, how many TVs I have or how many cell phones and appliances?     Why do they need to know what percentage of my take-home pay is spent on clothing or how often my family travels?

I haven't answered such questions in the past and will not again.    Completely intrusive.

Shorten the form to truly relevant data is my advice.

I don't see why data can't be collected more efficiently.  The forms should be collected by the householder from post office, CUC or WAC.  Then the form should be submitted to CUC or WAC, within one month of dropoff.  CUC or WAC then give the householder a $25 credit off their bill. And the government then pays CUC/WAC for each form.

No one needs a stranger on their doorstep or in their house, ID or not. In any case, I'll be at work during daylight hours and I won't answer the door when it is dark.

Is this the best use of funds to go door to door in the digital age?

I hate having to do this, I don't like strangers coming into my private residence and worst, without prior arrangements. Please don't disturb my saturday morning sleep like the Jehovah's Witness do every single Saturday even when no one answer, they still come back the following week, getting really sick and tired of them now!. cha !

This seems like an exercise in social welfare, for the canvassers, and to keep ESO employees occupied.  It is a pointless invasion of privacy.
