Construction sector wages still declining
(CNSBusiness): Construction industry wages in the Cayman Islands are down considerably, according to skilled laborers, who say their take-home pay has steadily reduced over the past 15 years. The local industry is as multi-layered and diverse as it has ever been in the 35 years since the Islands began serious development, though salaries are in some cases half of what they used to be. Outsourcing of work is to blame in many cases, with many larger companies opting to go through brokers to source employees from overseas at a cheaper rate. This is evidenced in the many different companies, large and small, that conduct business in the field of construction which once offered steady well-paid work for locals, especially in Grand Cayman. Imported slave wages and mass status grants of 2003 are what destroyed the construction industry. Now everyone that knows how to nail two boards together, hold a level, saw a piece of wood and lay a block have suddenly become a contractor with a license forget about the ability to read a house plan, that folks is the new Caymanian contractors gone are the days of good, honest, Caymanian contractors who gave value for money.
Lower wages just means more profit for the contractor, not a reduction in construction costs.

You might be right in your statement, but this doesnt comply with the local builders that built this country from the 70s.
We have more morals than to rip people off.
Good they should be declining – they were inflated before now maybe they are more realistic!

Unfortunately may the truth be known, NWDA sends people for construction that have NO QUALIFICATIONS or have been fired from their previous employee (construction). What choice do we have but ot hire from outside
Good. Construction costs are too high.
Of course the cost will be high when you skip the real builders in this country. Most of you now are using agencies, and project managers. which are ripping you eyes out your heads. These people have no morals.
Eveyone are in their packets, thats what you are paying for. Try giving your project to a genuine Cayman builder, we build this country without the mess we have here today.
There are no rich Caymanian Builders…. name me one if you can!
