Cops investigate blaze at RCIPS traffic unit

(CNS): The police and fire sevice are currently investigating a case of suspected arson at the RCIPS traffic department near Jose's gas station, on  Agnes Way, George Town. Officers on routine patrol early Monday morning spotted smoke coming from the building and went inside and found the blaze. They alerted the Cayman Islands Fire Service as they attempted to put it out. Fire crews responded immediately and using breathing apparatus were able to extinguish the fire at around 5:08am, some fifteen minutes after the report. Senior fire officers requested an investigation into the fire and the Fire Safety Inspector Tina Choy was called to the scene.

The building was unoccupied at the time and fire sService arsonist investigators, police detectives and scenes of crime officers are treating the blaze as a suspected arson. The police are appealing to the public who might have seen anything suspicious at the time to contact the Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Joseph Wright, at 516-8169 or Detective Constable Owen Santo at 324-0684 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Until the building is cleared by the investigators and assessed for its fitness for occupancy, officials said that the staff will be relocated. As a consequence, all enquiries from the public for traffic-related matters, including accident reports, should visit the Walkers Road Criminal Records Offices located at Unit 7, 2nd floor, Windjammer Plaza or contact the office at 949-4924.
