Moon halo captured by CNS reader

| 09/10/2014

(CNS): Wednesday’s full moon was captured with a splendid halo around it last night by a CNS reader. These types of lunar rings are caused by high-level cirrus clouds or ice crystals reflecting moonlight in the sky. Said to predict storms or bad weather, according to the US weather service, almost 65% of such moon rings are followed by rain. The halos happens when moonlight is refracted through ice particles in the Earth's atmosphere. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius. (Photo by Trudyann Duncan)

It seems nobody saw the lunar eclipse the same morning. There was a full lunar eclipse that was at its peak at 5:55am on the 8th just before the moonset at 6:22am. It was also a blood moon which does not occur very often. I got a picture on my phone around 5:30 but it was not that clear, the clouds also rolled in during the peak and hid it from view

The old timers used to say     "Circle around the moon good weather soon,  circle around
    the sun good weather done"

They also said that you could expect rain wthin 11 days of seeing a circle around the sun.

    "…creating a halo 22 degrees in radius."

Should be: …creating a halo with a radius giving 22 degrees of curvature
