Cops warn drivers to stop driving drunk

| 22/12/2014

(CNS): After arresting sixteen people for driving under the influence of alcohol during the second week of the police Christmas safety campaign, Operation Dasher, officers warned drivers not to get behind the wheel if they have been drinking. An RCIPS spokesperson noted that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous as it places other road users at risk of being involved in a crash and receiving serious injuries. The police also raised concerns about the number of people using phones while driving after 45 people were fined during the last week alone and advised motorists to use hands free devises. In addition to the 16 drunk drivers and 45 drivers caught using their phones, police arrested another five people for driving while disqualified.

The festive road safety and anti-crime campaign will last into the New Year as the police increase the number of road blocks and crack down on rogue drivers.

Taxi meters and short jail sentences for all DUIs.  Two simple steps to sort out a big problem.

My car knows its own way home, especially when I've had a drink

Tis the season to get jolly……

Well. Maybe if the cops that hang out by their favorite bar on south church street should heed this warning. Everyone knows they drive while drunk.

Why can’t it be a festive season all year round ?

  6. Life101 says:

Well here is an idea to the RCIP…how about you patrol year round and actually force the laws, obviously we have lawless people on this little island who need to face tough penalities.  I also believe Government should step in and have a "no drink and drive" program with the taxi's.  To get from Seven Mile Beach to West Bay it literally cost you $30 one way – are you kidding me?  No wonder people take the risk but it is a big one to take.  It should be a flat fee $20 round trip or $10 one way – I am sure people would not mind paying that and more people will take the taxi's, thereby the taxi's I am sure will make some decent change.

I hope for the New Year the RCIP brings back the traffic cops like we use to have.  There is no excuse for having over 300 officers and we cannot have a traffic department, just ridiculous and unexcusable.

May everyone make the wise choice of not drinking and driving, and may you all stay safe this Holiday Season.

Good comment: totally agree. But beware these phantom apostrophes, used twice: taxi's!

      Happy Christmas.

        RCIPS,

        I will stop drinking and driving when;

        a) The Taxi Operators stop robbing me; and

        b) Or other people stop robbing me wen I walk home.

Sort those to problems out and you will see me stop drinking and driving as well as 90% of the other people who also do it.

It cost me CI38 for a taxi to go from the top of the Walkers Rd to the Airport on November 21, 2014.

That is Taxi Robbery at its finest in the Cayman Islands.

Let’s see which is cheaper hitting someone property, traffic ticket, lic disqualification, court fines, someone’s life u asshole or $50.00 on a cab Wtf grow some brains idiot

    • Mr. C. Lion says:

"It should be a flat fee $20 round trip or $10 one way"

why should it be?  Who says?  If you think that it a fair price, and the punters will come flocking, then why don't you start your own taxi service?

Whilst I don't think that taxis are particularly cheap, no-one forces anybody to take one.

Taxi rates include cost of living. Gas or diesel, tires , wear and tear on engines , Cleaning . Interest rates on bank loan ,double charge on car insurance, Repairs , body work and paint. $15 per hour for driver. If you use more taxi you can get a discount. When you are drunk you want to argue price, vomit in vehicle and want service at 12 AM to 5 AM.

But you don't argue the price of a pint!! You got drunk ? How many pints or mixed drinks did you drink? A six pack ? 2 six packs? $40 cheapest six pack at bar  on 7 mile beach. So a minimum of a $100 plus tip 115 CI dollars. I have to wait for you all night cause there is no one else but drunks that need a taxi . Cheap very cheap dude.

I was driving home the other night after a few and a cop pulled me over.  He came over to my window and right away he said to me, "your breath smells like alcohol, have you been drinking?" I politely said back to him, "your eyes looks glazed over, have you been eating donuts?" I'm now writing this from the inside, so be careful out there! Happy Holidays Cayman, I will see you guys in the new year when they let me out…

If the RCIP want to get speeders why not watch out along the Spotts raceway where people drive 20, 30, 40 mph over the speed limit.

According to the Daily Mail, a certain Michael Ebanks has been accused of drug smuggling in Britain. Anyone know him?

Aah, but you don't get it. If there is any hint of a Cayman connection the poster's intention is to highlight it all the while hypocrtically insisting that we shouldn't identify foreign national criminal criminals if they have been living here. British hypocrisy at its finest.

Enough with the verbal warnings Police! Just do your jobs consistently. How about you pay attention to some of the well known watering holes….see how long certain cars are there, then pull them over to breathalyse them?

It's really not that hard to do….if you really want to send a no tolerance message.

The mobile phone co's should bear some of the responsibility for mobile phone use while driving and they should be required to retail the bluetooth handsfree kits from Parrot, Motorola and others to encourage their customers to comply.

Always easy to blame everyone apart from those to whom the law is very clear. Abdication of responsibility and almost every damn story on here currently the same

  13. Anonymous says:

People will only take the 'don't drink and drive' message seriously when RCIPS nail some of the well-known publc figures who think nothing of sinking more than a few before driving home.

Everyone except RCIPS seems to know who they are and where they go drinking – I wonder why that is?

  14. Anonymous says:

Not to defend drunk drivers,  but WHY doesn't the government / police address the lack of affordable and reliable public transportation options ?  $8 just to get into a cab does nothing to help the drunk driving problems.  Extra if it's after 11pm !

    • Anonymous says:

Yes getting drunk is something that needs to be assisted, we need more public services better taxi and bus service to ferry the drunks around.

Perhaps responsible drinking is another option.

    • Anonymous says:

Everyone has to make a iving so how should this be done. Everyone is always talking about downsizing the Government or should the Government pay the lower cab fare.

Seems you want your cake and want to eat it too. Have no rpoblem with you partying but this is not a cheap counry to live in.

  15. Knot S Smart says:

Never say this to a cop when he pulls you over:

'I'M not as think as you drunk I am'…

    • Life of the party says:

No, I tell them that I drive better under the affluence of incohol.

They need a whipping! Saturday evening, I had to swerve completely off the road to escape a drunk drivver………He didn't even stop? So I followed himt o the gas station–when he existed the cab of his truck, he fell down he was so drunk???? OMG! What?

But we the innocent have to pay for the guilty!
