Driver serious following crash

| 27/01/2009

(CNS): Yet again the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) have found themselves having to investigate a single vehicle car crash that has left the driver seriously injured after he lost control and drove into a wall. Police said the 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a call at 2:00pm on Sunday, 25 January, reporting that a car had overturned on its side on Fairbanks Road in George Town, near Siesta Gardens.

Police and medics responded to the scene and found a man in a red Chevrolet Spark that had been travelling north along Fairbanks Road. Police were informed that whilst negotiating a left hand bend, the 37-year-old driver lost control of his car and collided with a guard wall. The man had to be removed from the vehicle by Fire and Rescue personnel along with the ambulance crew. The driver, who sustained injuries to the head, was taken to hospital and is reported to be in a stable but serious condition.

Scenes of Crime officers processed the scene and an accident reconstructionist is carrying out investigations. Anyone who witnessed the crash or believes they saw the vehicle prior to the crash is asked to contact Acting Chief Inspector Derrick Elliott on 925-2176.

In a another incident on Cayman’s roads at the weekend, a male cyclist received minor injuries after a collision with a car on West Bay Road in the vicinity of Queens Court.  On Friday, 23 January, an 18-year-old cyclist made a right turn into the path of White Toyota Mark II which was travelling towards George Town. The cyclist fell to the ground and received minor bruises to his body and palms. He was assisted by the 31-year-old man who was driving the car and was taken to George Town hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling crime stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs

I have contacted the police several times about cars speeding on this stretch of road and the persistant use of pocket bikes, go carts, ATV’s and noisy motorcycles speeding up and down with the riders being underage and not wearing a helmet.   What did they tell me?  There was nothing they could do even though they knew some of the perpetrators unless they catch them in the act!  How many patrol cars have I seen on this road since then – ZERO.

The RCIPS don’t listen, don’t act and don’t care!  All they seem interested in is standing by roundabouts to check licence coupons!

I agree most drivers on this island are a danger to themselves and everyone else on the road.  Recently I observed that if there is open road in front of a driver, he/she pays no attention to the posted speed limit, and drives as fast as they can.   And if I am driving the speed limit and there is open road in front of me, these drivers will tailgate me.

Driver’s education in the States teaches that there should one car length between two cars for every ten miles per hour you are driving.  Meaning, if driving at 30 MPH, there should be three car lengths between – this is the distance needed to stop safely should the car in front stop.

Tailgaters must think I’ll drive faster if they’re on my bumper.  I have been driving for 38 years without a traffic ticket or an accident – I attribute this to good driver’s training and being a very defensive driver.

I fully agree.  You can not dare stop for an animal in the road because the person behind you are so close that you will cause an accident.  If you dare go the speed limit, the try and force you to go faster.

The only solution is to put in place sleeping police/speed bumps on all secondary roadways this is the only solution.

Alternatively, every person under the age of 21yrs of age should not be allowed to drive sports cars, as more and more we see young people driving these vehicles.  The way the get away with the cheaper insurance is that their parents (the cloakers); have them as an add on driver.  The insurance companies need to regulate this or the traffic law ammended to fix these loopholes.

Otherwise, do what some US states are doing placing restrictor places on the vehicles that they cannot drive above a certain speed.  This has been done in many places, even Nascar Race Cars have them.  When these plates are in place the insurance rates are cheaper as well.

We just got to do something before more lives are lost and not just the driver of the speeding car but innocent persons as well.

What I would suggest is that the RCIP put more traffic cops on the roadways especially at night and during rush hour.  On the weekends the outer districts are plaqued by speeders on the Shamrock and Frank Sound roadways to the point that many families don’t bother going east for the weekend with their children to enjoy same Rum Point or Kaibo.

The roadways in this small community need more traffic cops and to the point that every so many cars you see a traffic cop car.  If this is done I can assure you there will be less traffic offences.

Lastly, in Switzerland there is a system in place whereby the traffic cop sits by the side of the road with a machine that scans the vehicles license plate which has a barcode on it (we will need to upgrade the plates for this); and this way the machine will upload the speeder with all the information on that registered vehicle and also clock the location via GPS so it can indenty the exact area where the vehicle was speeding and proves that the location of the vehicle at the time was in.  This way the argument in court will be simply to prove that the area of the speeding vehicle is a 40mph and the speeder was doing 55 etc.

We have to become more hi-tech in this country if we are going to advance to the next stage.  These 1940’s way of doing stuff has got to stop.

I ask the same question about the area that I live in all the time. The way the NUTS drive on that road is blood curdling! I’m scared to death to let my child play in the yard because of the way I’ve seen people speeding on our road. And unfortunately for us there is NOTHING we can do to stop the speeders because I was told by NRA that I can’t get speed bumps! All I can do is pray to God no one runs into my yard and nothing happens to anyone in my yard because of these stupid, irresponsible & careless drivers!

How more serious accidents have not happened in this area is unbelievable. You can very often hear the cars and motor bikes speding down fron the T junction at Banana Walk going towards the playing field and on to Fairbanks Road.
