(CNS): A couple along with their 16-month-old baby escaped from a fire this morning by tying sheets together and using them to descend from a second-floor window at a house in the Pease Bay area of Bodden Town. According to fire officers because of the couple’s quick reaction along with a speedy response from the Cayman Islands Fire Service which saw the fire at their home quickly extinguished, no one was hurt.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Rosworth McLaughlin said both responses to the early-morning fire were “phenomenal,” and commended the residents for their alert reaction, and the fire officers “for a job well-done.”

The Fire Service received a 911 call at around 5:30 this morning (Wednesday, 18 March), reporting a fire at the Bodden Town residence. Fire vehicles from the Frank Sound and Central fire stations responded to the call. The fire was brought under control within only four minutes of arrival at the scene.  Investigations regarding the cause of the fire are now underway.

This was the second residentialfire this month  following the fire on Cayman Brac this weekend where three occupants also escaped through a window and McLaughlin reminded all residents of the need for working smoke detectors and strategically-placed fire extinguishers in their homes.

He urged people to be informed regarding fire-safety precautions and reiterated the need to have fire escape plans for private dwellings. For more fire-safety tips, contact the Fire Service on 949-0077.
