Police seize 40k in GT busts

| 14/04/2009

(CNS): Over the last few weeks officers from George Town police station have seized cash, drugs, lottery tickets and illegal liquor as a result of four separate raids across the capital. Ina series of major police operations almost CI$40,000 has been recovered and several arrests have made. In the most recent operation on Saturday 11 April police said one man and two women were arrested on suspicion of selling lottery tickets at an address in Greenwood Drive where the man was also arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine.

On Thursday, 9 April a man was arrested on suspicion of selling lottery tickets and using a premise as a common gaming house and on Saturday, 4 April an operation conducted at an address in the Shedden Road area of the district resulted in the arrest of three people. Two men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of unlawful assembly and offences relating to the illegal sale of liquor.

A large amount of cash and in excess of 1300 bottles of beer and around 50 bottles of liquor were seized. The operations, led by George Town uniformed officers, involved those from the Hot Spot Team and the Uniformed Support Group.

“We often hear from the community concerns around the illegal sale of liquor and lottery tickets,” said Inspector Bennard Ebanks who is second in charge of the district. “And we often find that areas where this kind of activity is going on can be linked to other crimes including firearms related offences and even robberies. We are committed to making George Town as safe as it can be and will continue to target those who insist on breaking the law.”

Inspector Ebanks also thanked the community for their cooperation with fighting crime. “The police cannot tackle crime alone and we are extremely grateful for the support and assistance of the public,” he said.

Anyone with information about crime taking place in George Town should contact the police station on 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling Crime Stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.

tO: Oh yes good work. $4k?

Oh yes good work. $4k? Chicken feed.. You still fired the guy who seized $13m of drugs on Northside singlehandedly though, didn’t you? Setting up another compensation lawsuit against the people of the Cayman Islands? Way to go!!

I think you meant to say $40,000, not $4,000, yes it is chicken fee compared to $13million for sure!!

Whom do you speak of:  Mr. Kernohan???

If so, i hope he sues and gets alot of money because he deserves to be compensated for such humiliation as he has been put through!!!

  2. Blame the Church! says:

The Churches on Cayman, at best, turn a blind eye to raffles to raise funds for their schools.  That is illegal gambling.  So yes I blame them for condoning illegal gambling.

Let’s hope that those arrested do not have high level local relatives in the police force.

  3. Twyla M Vargas says:

    DONT INVOLVE THE CHURCH

If the church do not want to comment on the sale of lottery I say leave them be.   My reason for saying this is no matter what the Church has to say will not stop the sale of lottery on the Island.   I always believe that if you do not like whats on the Television, then change the channel.  That is to say those persons who want to play lottery let them play, but do not force the hand of the Church.

Now, as far as the police making a BUST over the weekend, I say thumbs up.  Good job, but it is not what I want to hear.  Busting Lottery sellers is nothing, it is a waste of time.  Give it up.  They are still going to sell and people are still going to buy.   What will happen when a National lottery is introduced.   Are we expecting the Church to stop it.   No.  Just leave the church out of this.  Those who want to buy let them go ahead and buy and those who dont just dont buy it.   Salvation is free and we were given the right by Jesus to choose.  Choose wisely.

To the Police I say get the guns off the street, then you will be doing a good job.

Listening to the Radio Cayman talk show this afternoon, the caller was not impressed with this recent bust, he suggested that every school child knew of this criminal behavior and only the small fry were involved in arrest.

The caller’s comments were not questioned by anyone giving the impression of general agreement with his comments.

I was really hopeful that this corruption investigation would dig up some dirty apples but so far not much to show for the investigation.

So what about solving some murders here????? Can we know what is taking so long to charge someone for Sabrina’s murder?

So what if you have someone under suspicion of murder, we all know that can’t go to court and bring a conviction so get back to the MAJOR crime that just took place and stop trying to distract people with all the other minor stuff!

  6. Anonymous says:

Who cares what minor petty crimes they have found or "solved"!

Ohhhh the shame! Lotto tickets, WOW what a difficult life changing case to crack. Everyone here knows who’s selling numbers so whoopidy doo. Might as well make that legal and stop wasting our money and your time on foolishness.

What I want to know is……WHY HAS NO ONE BEEN FORMALLY CHARGED IN SABRINA SCHIRN’s MURDER YET?!?!?!?!?!? WHY HAS JOSH HOOKER’s MURDER GONE UNSOLVED – NO ONE CHARGED THERE EITHER????  What about MARK JEFFERSON??? TODD POWERY???? CHADWICK’s MURDER??? CHADWICK BODDEN’s ASSAULT IN EAST END????? The list goes on and on…..These ANIMALS know that they can get away with MURDER here, that’s why there are so many. BRING IN A PROPER PERMANENT FORENSICS TEAM, SOME PROPER DETECTIVES, people that KNOW what they are doing, have some balls and aren’t afraid to serve proper sentences on repeat offenders…The first time a young man is caught with a gun, MANDATORY decade in jail – NO PRISON RELEASE, no GOOD BEHAVIOUR rewards – I bet you ten year sof solitude will make him think twice about picking it up again when he comes out! Do you know how many repeat offenders are now BACK in jail for attempted murder? Why – cuz we slapped them on the wrist the first time around. MAKE THEM SUFFER FOR THEIR ACTIONS and they will shape up.

SOLVE SOME OF THOSE CRIMES, then you’ll regain part of my respect@! Till then SHUT UP about this petty garbage. No one cares about this petty foolishness — we want our peace of mind and security back.

As a matter of fact — there should be some way to make "H.E." the former Gov use the money he’s wasted to fund a new forensics and detective team. He should have to pay for all his wasted expenses out of his OWN pocket! CHA!

I happened to be at the Kaibo on Easter monday and the scent of ganja was stifling me and i walked over to the mobile police van where five police officers including a sergeant were all standing. I told them that i did appreciate their presence but standing around the van while drugs were being consumed where kids were was not good policing. The reply i got was to report the establishment so they could lose their licence or leave. I had already gathered my kids and girlfriend and was leaving but to get such a response really floored me and leaves me to wonder how many  paycheck cops we have enlisted in the force.

      Good work guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strangely the people with the sour taste in their mouths about the RCIPS refuse to becomes special constables to give that extra helping hand that thier country needs so badly. I say get up and help make a difference otherwise shut up!

Great workRCIPS!!  You are just doing your job, upholding the Law.  This has been going on for years.  If the public doesn’t like it, let them convince the MLA’s to change the Law.

  8. micheal western says:

Hopefully this will be the start of better things and not a once a year occurrence hopefully all the money they spent on the RCIPS will start to give us some results before the end of the year.

  9. Anonymous says:

Oh wow – people selling lottery tickets.  Thank you RCIPS for removing these terrible people from society,  I mean what is this place coming too when lottery tickets are sold illegaly?  I hope we are also going to raid all the houses that host poker games for money too.  I feel really unsafe in living under the threat that someone may offer me a lottery ticket and force meto buy it.

I can sleep much better now because you see, all the drugs and guns around me cannot possibly do as much harm as a lottery ticket!

    Give me a break!

Get on with solving some real crime!  The RCIPS is crying that they are short of staff and this is how the allocate their dwindling human resources?

  10. Anonymous says:

They are either looking for medals or pay rises.

As for the poster…Please leave your cynical comments for stories that deserve it. The RCIPS has done a good job in this case. They do not want a medal, it is a news report for crying out loud and as much as they have had mishaps, we can congratulate on their new victory over crime.

    Well done RCIPS!

You re so "blinded" by the RCIPS do you have family members in there? MISHAPS CAN YOU TELL ME HOW MANY UNSOLVED MURDERS WE HAVE? WHAT REPORTS THEY NEED TO FOLLOW UP ON THEY DON’T GIVE ME A BREAK! THEY ALL NEED TO EARN THEIR PAY AND SOLVE THE "COLD CASES" THAT WE HAVE!!

Yes, I guess they will have to find a new place to frequent after all the bars are closed…WHAT A SAD SITUATION!!

  11. Anonymous says:

Yes the Church Leadership are publicly silent about crime, murder and gambling and only rise up against homosexuals.  Wonder why?

As for these after hours late night sessions, well i do agree that some crime can come out of them, for the most part the people enjoy themselves and relieve stress, maybe a few incidences of crime here and there can spring up, but that happens at clubs also.  As a matter of fact, statisticswould show that more voilent crimes happen at or outside of clubs than ever happen at late night sessions.

However, it is illegal, and it is disrespectful to the Law of the Land to do it and the people who do it know that.  They know they take a gamble everytime they do it, they are not foolish.  Also this Recession will propel people into desperate ways to make money, this is financially tough times.  I would rather people have late night sessions selling beer, than go and rob and murder or cause grievous bodily harm.  Much rather that it is just a late night session where beers are selling.

Guess the usual group of off-duty RCIPS officers that loves to "party" will have to find somewhere else to go now after the bars/clubs closes. So sad.

Now take out the real big guys in this illegal lottery we all know that  Criminal activity breeds all sorts of Crimes Ezzard and Gilbert are the only two candidates who really understand that you need to take this illegal operation out ofthe hands of the Criminal element and is it sure odd the church is rather quiet about speaking out about this illegal gambling the silence is deafening.

    • Anonymous says:

What would you like the Church to do?? It seams if they speak out,it’s wrong; and if they don’t it’s wrong..what to do?.

  14. Pale Rider says:

This is a perfect example of the police conducting PR work and making no headway into the real crime….busting persons selling lottery tickets and "recovering" $40,000????    Please…..this is as easy an operation as it gets….this is not a "Hard" target…the police need to actually take a step towards hitting some real, legitimate criminal targets…..and keep on hitting them….The police are too wrapped up in this kind of "crime"….and are afraid to target hardened criminals….guess they don’t get paid enough to dothat….or care enough about this country…seeing as how the majority of the police these days are from some other jurisdiction and couldn’t be moved to action if they sat on a stick of dynamite….sorry to say,….MAJOR FAIL!!!    Fear not….I will continue to call out the police and the leadership until they wake up and actually start to do some REAL police work…!!!!

  15. Anonymous says:

Congratulations RCIP!!   Thanks also to those in the community who helped RCIP.

Add to this I even saw an RCIP officer pull over a speeder….that is what we have been talking about. More roadblocks for law breakers clean up the troublemakers and law breakers.

Police seize 40k in GT busts…Huh…So what, they want medals for this!! It is high time that they did some work!!

We still have that sour taste in our mouths about the RCIPS the way in which they have conducted other investigations!!
