Senior beaten in his home
(CNS): UPDATED 12:30pm — A 67-year-old man suffered serious injuries on Sunday after he was allegedly beaten in his East End home by two robbers armed with a baseball bat. The victim was taken to hospital and has been admitted to the Surgical Unit suffering from serious head injuries and injuries to both arms. In a separate incident, West Bay police have charged 27-year-old, Jonathan Mellard, of Willie Farrington Road, with one count of robbery after an incident in which a man said a robber put a razor blade to his throat and demanded he hand over the alcohol he was carrying. Mellard will appear before magistrates today, Monday 11 May.
Detectives in Bodden Town are investigating the East End robbery, which was reported to police at 10:30pm Sunday, 10 May. The 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a call from a member of the public reporting that a man had been assaulted in Sea View Road. Officers responded to the scene and found that a 67-year-old man had suffered some serious injuries. He told officers he had returned home and found two men in his house. He says the men assaulted him with a baseball bat, took his wallet and ran from the location.
Scenes of Crime Officers processed the scene and some items were recovered, including the suspected weapon involved. Detectives would like to hear from anyone who was in the Sea View Road area who may have seen the two offenders. Anyone who can help should contact Bodden Town CID on 947-2220.
In West Bay, police arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of robbery following an incident at the Batabano Plaza on West Church Street. At around 8:30pm on Friday, 8 May, the victim called police and stated that he had been approached by a man outside the plaza who had put a razor blade to his throat and demanded he had over the alcohol he was carrying. The man, was not seriously hurt in the incident, said he gave the offender some bottles of beer. Shortly afterwards, police arrested the suspect on suspicion of robbery and recovered the suspected weapon used. He remains in police custody at this time.

Now this was a heinous crime; and I do empathise with the victim, reality is that the police can’t be in everyone’s home to protect their homes from being burglarised, so instead of trashing the police. Give them your support in finding the perpetrators and bringing them to justice. Also people of Cayman take heed to the precautionary leaflets and public advisories that are sent out by RCIPS.
What you have here are feral youth, I don’t mean that with any racial overtones as who are involved have yet to be identified. I am relating this term to the behavior especially to the violence and lack of conscience of those involved. When these youth are identified they will have been in trouble before, of that I am confident.
There will probably be a home life which is also out of control.
As long as we are hemorrhaging good cops (no matter where they are from) and either bullying the good ones who come back, or coming out in the paper and overtly racially abusing them, then our society will continue to spiral down into what we are seeing the first signs of now. The criminals don’t respect the integrity of the law or the integrity of the police officers.
David Baines needs to bring with him both a huge set of balls, and a huge scythe, and cut all the dead wood out of the RCIPS and burn it. If you’re not performing, you’re not a police officer, simple as that. All the middle ranking bigots need to be thrown out, and join the criminals being whipped in heroes square. Being a police officer isn’t just a job, it’s a calling.
With great power comes great responsibilty they say. But here, with any power come great abuse.
Stand up Cayman, if your cousin was a rapist, you’d out him. If your cousin is a corrupt or abusive, ineffective police officer, out him or her louder!

Della, while I do agree with the need for a ‘Change in the TYPE of leadership in the RCIPS, the Problem needs to be properly diagnosed in order to understand how to deal with it.
This is a CONSTITUTIONAL problem. When a Constitution has a Bill of Rights for Criminals, at the expense of the Rights of Law Abiding Citizens, one has a BIG problem.
I have always said that the only ‘Rights’ criminals should have, is the ‘Right to be Punished to the Fullest Extent of the Law’.
Criminals DON’T respect Laws, so why is the Law protecting criminals at the expence of those of us who are the Victims? Do VICTIMS not have rights?
The abolition of ‘Flogging’ as a Cruel and Inhumane Punnishment for Criminals, has led to ever increasing levels of Violent Crimes being carried out upon us Law Abiding Citizens, the VICTIMS.
This island NEEDS a change of Constitution, but most importantly, we need a Change of Attitude towards Crime & Punishment.
It’s a shame what a disgustiung crime that has taken place against a senior citizen of such a beautiful country. This is island is no longer the peaceful, ”safe” it was 10 years ago.
I know there are countries in the world that have higher crime rates then ours but it’s more serious because these crimes are happening so close to home as for Cayman’s size. Everyone is affected by these crimes in one way or another. What isgoing to become of our country?
In case some people do not understand what happen here its not just a robbery as the some would like us to believe. These are called home invasions recognise the signs Cayman and deal with this crime situation quickly before it gets out hand.The RCIPS crime investigation leadership needs to replaced immediately and we are suggesting that HE bring Mrs Ellie Bird its time women be given a leadership role in the RCIPS as it appears the years of male leadership are not capable of dealing with the crime situation.

I support this whipping 200%. Put them in GT on a Friday afternoon for a good whipping and we can all have a happy hour celebration. This is the best deterrent ever. We will then see what cowards these so called criminals are.
