2nd prison officer suspended
(CNS): A second prison officer has been suspended and an internal investigation is underway into the escape of James Orville Ebanks, the Cayman Islands Prison Service has confirmed. The HMP Northward inmate was found to be missing sometime Friday morning 8 May, but was caught and returned to custody Monday evening, 11 May, after being apprehended by prison officers. A full internal prison investigation into the facts surrounding the escape is proceeding as quickly as possible, the Prison Service says.
The aim of the investigation is to determine what the exact circumstances of the escape were, what disciplinary actions may be warranted as a result, and what new security measures may be required to prevent any repetition of this incident.
The RCIPS is conducting an investigation, which is not unusual in these circumstances, into the unlawful escape by the prisoner, including any offences that he might have committed up to and including the time of his recapture. Additionally, the investigating officer will examine if he was aided and abetted during and after his escape, which is a serious criminal offence. The last incident of this kind to occur was in September 2004, when two prisoners escaped shortlyafter Hurricane Ivan.

Directer Rattery continues to direct. This is such a farce…were he a local, or Caribbean national he would be suspended.
If the end result includes a continuation of this director, untouched and intact with sea, sun, and tax free fun at our expence this community will react with a verbal fury never experienced.
We will not be sitting ducks any more…a convenient place for the release of pigeon droppings.
This is a country of 64,000 people smaller than many collage towns. It is bull…that we should feel compelled to stomach mediocre performers at great expence. People who network to relocate here under the farce of being angels of mercy and bishops from whom salvation flow.
We are tired of being an expensive experiment subject to the tyrany of well connected outsiderswho are nobodies where they originate, looking for good retirement, and golden parachutes while lining up the next group of friends to come on over and bang this country.
We have payed to much for too little for too long.
There are people inpositions of trust who do not have our welfare at heart. They live to sign the next contract, get the next extention, exploit the next loop hole and s….on us during all of that process while doing everthing in there power to shut us up and shut us down.
Yes we have our own SOBs…but they are ours. We certainly do not need any body elses.
This country is too small to allow the naked practices of selective justice and the application of rules necessary for us to coexist.
At the end of this should we just swallow that the Director is doing a "heck of a job…" like a certain director was complimented on during the Katrina debacle? Because he seems to have friends in high places at the moment.
Hell no.
"Directer Rattery continues to direct. This is such a farce…were he a local, or Caribbean national he would be suspended".
You are absolutely correct.
There are people inpositions of trust who do not have our welfare at heart. They live to sign the next contract, get the next extention, exploit the next loop hole and s….on us during all of that process while doing everthing in there power to shut us up and shut us down.
Well what the hell do you expect when you kick foreigners out after 7 years???? You reap what you sow with such a short sighted immigration policy.
I’m really glad to hear that two officers have been suspended trust it’s not with FULL PAY. As we poor caymanians are paying for enough already.
I too am wondering about the prison officer or officers that were suppose to be there in the area where Sabrina Schirn body were found. Why haven’t they been fired or suspended? Is it because of their NATIONALITY…………. or because of who they KNOW. As for the Director he need to be sent back to where he is FROM TOO……………….
I have worked in two maximum security prisons in North America and studied criminal justice while I was away at University. Please people dont allow Rattray to make you believe that the so called classification system that is used is the best one. He talked about an instrument that is used to classify prisoners at HMP NW.
I have researched and found ten (10) others that could work. Although, they would have to be modified to suit the types of crimes in Cayman and most importantly it would have to be modified in order to be culturally sensitive. And that is the problem folks, what works in N. America or Europe does not necessarily work here. But you cant tell that to the Legislators, cause anything foreign is better.
Thank God I was able to get an education so that people like him could not pull the wool over my eyes.
Good Lord!! How can the Prison Director and his main supporter, the Governor live with themselves in applying this double standard?? I agree that if suspensions are warranted as a result of Ebank’s escape, then they should be implemented, as is being done. But what about the accountability in the case of the Sabrina Schirn murder? Why hasn’t the Director been suspended?
Of course, with two major prison breaches recently, to save face, action had to be taken this time. But again, who bears the brunt? The soldier and not the General.
I say Operation Tempura should continue and be expanded to include Prison & Judicial systems.
Finally!
Make these people accountable for their poor performance, no matter who they are or where they’re from!
The winds of change are coming Cayman, we need to embrace them for our country’s future…
Bless..
