I’m guessing that you have never in your life stared down the barrel of a gun that was pointing in your direction. For me to put my unarmed self in that position would require a deeply personal connection to the reason!

Have we forgotten that these guys had guns?!

It is very likely that these were hardened criminals with nothing left to lose – would you want to be the deciding factor as to whether some loser returns to prison for the rest of his days?!

Yes the security officer has a job to do, however, that has to be done within boundaries.

For example, supposed the gunmen only managed to get thier hands on $2,000.00, rode off, the guard gave chase, they turned and pumped 4 bullets into his body and killed him? He could have been  a father or 2-3-4, husband, son, uncle to many people – killed over a few grand that is probably insured in any event.

We would all be singing a different story then wouldnt we?

We really need to get a grip on this gun situation in this country – because I DREAD the day where the option of arming security guards or even all RCIPS officers for that manner with handguns.

I’ll be officially packing up and leaving before that strand of mayhem kicks off.

You are right on that.  Security guards in this country are for the most part just uniforms standing around looking busy.  Most of the time they are on their phones talking or texting or flirting with staff they are paid to watch.

Only a few good security companies on this island exist and I do not even think it is more than maybe 2 or 3.  Definately the guards at the clubs like Oh Bar and Royal palms are on the ball because I have seen them first hand handle some scary situations but then I notice other companies run the opposite direction to trouble.

Crime on this island is not going to get any better until we train the right people such as these guards. Also the Police need to work with them more as I think that could also help.

Whodatis, unfortunately your comment symbolises everything that is wrong in the country today.

The security guards job is to try to be a deterrant and to prevent the stores getting ripped off. If I was paying for security guards at my business and they wouldn’t even bother following a thief on a bike in his car at a  distance then I’m sorry but that is not somebody I would want on my payroll. They are on a bike, he would be in  car, it’s not diffiuclt to follow them without getting too close, if they spot him and turn he can drive away, no problem.

A security guard must be either very lazy or he was in on the whole robbery otherwise if he had a backbone he would have acted.

We have to get local people out of the culture of laziness and expecting jobs to come on silver platters without having to do any work.

There seems to be a massive culture of turn the otherway and turn a blind eye etc to serious crimes on this island and so serious crimes become more and more frequent.

It is obvious that the police arrrived there after the robbers had left the location. How easy do you think it is to locate two persons on bicycles in George Town. They wouldn’t have on their hoodies, that’s for sure. The bashing and negative comments made towards our Police Force needs to stop; it doesn’t solve anything!!! You want to be helpful try to get some useful info and call it into Crime Stoppers!

Can anyone tell me why the police have such vague descriptions?  It seems to me that "light", "dark" complexion could easily be ANY nationality.  Why not describe them as caucasion, filipino, etc?

I also like the fact they took off on bicycles and police couldn’t locate them.  Then on top of it all, I am positive there are video camera’s in the store, WHY NOT RELEASE THE PICTURES TO THE MEDIA!

Incompetence is so unbelieveable here it is past being funny.

Only a handful of Security Companies on this island I think really matter.  That is a good suggestion that someone made in the post.  Could the Security not had followed a safe distance in his car and give Police the info they needed?  I would hate to know that the getaway bicycle was a hard task to catch up to. What is the use of having Security if they are not going to be of better assistance.

With all these Security Companies on this island I have only seen maybe 3 of the companies that I would give any consideration to for business.

Security Guards do not have authority to detain anyone and has been abused by the police for detaining criminals in the past , therefore the Security Guards are a waste of money.

    "Made their getaway on bicycles???

Good god, could nobody catch them? Surely the secuirty guard could follow them in his car (at a distance obviously) whilst talking to the police on the phone??"

I’m pretty sure if I was a security guard there is not a company in the world that could pay me enough to drive after and behind two bicycle riding bandits armed with handguns! The mere fact that they were brazen enough to carry out their mission in the manner they did demonstrates that they weren’t working with a full deck of cards upstairs!

On a serious note however, Cayman is really getting ridiculous with the levels of violence today.

Armed robberies of gas stations at 10:20 pm?! That is incredibly dangerous!

Shame really…I’m still in my 20’s but the country I grew up in was paradise – very different reality today.

If they had their faces covered, how could they tell that there was a scar under one of their eyes?
