Governor’s office confirms prisoner release legitimate

| 01/07/2009

(CNS): Rumours of a mass release of prisoners was clarified by the Governor’s Office this evening in a release which stated that seven men had been released on parole on Friday from HMP Northward. The head of the Governor’s Office, Steve Moore, confirmed that the men were released last Friday, 26 June, on the advice of the parole board and all seven had, according to Attorney General Sam Bulgin completed their sentences.

Concerns in the community that some twenty men had been released, some of whom were sex offenders, led the Governor’s Office to clarify that the seven men were eligible for parole. “The Governor’s Office makes decisions on the parole of inmates based on the advice of the Parole Board and in consultation with the Attorney General’s Office,” the statement from Moore said. “Following recent legal advice from the Attorney General’s Chambers the decision was taken on Friday 26 June, release date. The release of the men followed the determination by the Attorney General’s office that they had all completed their sentences and were eligible for release.”

The rumour was further fuelled in the wake of a police report that a woman had been attacked by an intruder in her home in West Bay.

Should this be a matter of fear to the outsiders whom have already kept their doors lock?

I agree with the content of them wearing electronic devices for monitoring of their where abouts. However not everyone is kept in the loop of when these sex offenders are out and about (clubs, nightly get togethers, etc.)

Cayman has definately dropped their high rate of securrity for the public. It’s not the saem anymore as to being safe on the streets or even letting in some of the atmosphere into our homes. Please be reminded about the mothers & fathers that are trying to raise their kids as single parents. What about the pre-school that our children currenlty attend during the day. Our kids can be kidnapped at any point in time.

I agree that we all have done some mistakes in our life and some have learned from their lessons, but is this something that should not be repremended?

    Think about it!!

Considering the factthat the whole world is now realising that the war on drugs is a failure and that treatment rather than incarciration if a better way of combating drug abuse, Ihope that the parole board will look at the number of people in Nothward because of simple drug consumption and release those prisoners as well.

What HMP needs to do is release the prisoners in there that are INNOCENT and is serving time for a crime they did not commit, instead they are caging them up with the more experienced criminals and creating monsters in there, whilst the person(s) who commited the crime is still on the road creating havoc in the community.  Can you imagine sitting in HMP for however number of years for something you never did?? Can you imagine the amount of anger, hatred and evil thoughts that are being created in their minds?? When they eventually get out they will really do something horrible for having them in there innocently, taking away quality time they could be spending with their family.

The corrupted police force that we have on these islands needs to pull their pants up and start solving crimes and STOP using innocent people as scape goats to keep the community at ease or hushed, we would rather you have the right person(s) and take your time than to shove a pacifier in our mouth.

Rightfully, once an ‘Offender’ has ‘Paid their Debt’ according to the Law, they should be released.

However, an offender on Parole should be MADE to wear an Electronic Monitoring Device for the duration of their Sentence as a condition of their PArole (such Devices do indeed exist). That way, they can be tracked (GPS) at all times.

I am also sure that the Police / Authorities are more than capable of comparing the Details of the ‘Attacker’ with those of ALL prior Northward vacationers.

The question should really be, ‘Have these (and other former Offenders) been ‘reformed’ by the current forms of Punishment that they have been awarded, and is the Penal ‘Resort’ (sorry, Prison) working?

Some think not …. I tend to agree with them.
