Cayman gets quake No. 3
(CNS): Update 2:30 pm – The earthquake that shook Grand Cayman at 11:05 this morning has been upgraded slightly to a 4.6 magnitude tremor, as posted on the US Geological Survey (USGS) website. Hazard Management Cayman Islands says this is a light earthquake and that no damage had been reported. While this is the third earthquake in the Cayman region this year, all have been small and the island has remained unscathed, in contrast to the fallout in Chile from a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, which was 500 times stronger than the one that hit Haiti in January.
The latest coordinates for the centre of the earthquake on USGS are 18.921 N, -81.461 W, at a depth of 9.8 km (6.1 miles). The centre was 27 miles (43 km) S of George Town, 28 miles (45 km) SSW of Bodden Town, and 32 miles (51 km) S of West Bay. Some residents felt the tremor and evacuated buildings, HMCI says.
Today’s tremor follows a significant 5.9 magnitude earthquake which hit Grand Cayman on Tuesday, 19 January, 32 miles south of Bodden Town a little after 9:20 am at a depth of just over 6 miles. Grand Cayman also experienced a minor earth tremor of 3.7 at around 2.45 am on Friday, 12 February. The seismic event occurred some 30 miles south of George Town at a depth of 10KMs.
This morning the Seismic Unit in Jamaica issued a preliminary notification regarding the tremor, reporting it as a magnitude 4.5 quake at 11.05 am local time, 18.5 North, 81.05 West, at a depth of 10 Kilometers, approximately 47.5 miles south west of the Frank Sound seismograph.
The Puerto Rico Seismic Network issued a preliminary notification regarding the tremor, reporting it as a magnitude 4.4 quake at 19.0 North, 81.6 West, and at a depth of 16 Kilometers.

I don’t know much about the science of earthquakes but perhaps these milder tremours we’re experiencing are relieving the pressure under the tetonic plates. Perhaps they will settle down soon and there won’t be a big one – just a thought…
That’s the conclusion I have been led to.
I am happy to see a majority thumbs down on all these god-freaks.
We look like a fool to the outside world.
But looking at the thumbs down, I guess there is still hope.
I have to agree with 8:42, everytime something happens god is brought into it. Can the people explain though why did god allow all those people to die in Haiti and Chile, why does god allow people to suffer? why does god allow people to kill good people? why did god allow over 250,000 people to die in the 2004 earthquake? why did god allow 911 to take place? I can go on and on and on, but I guess you know what I am getting at.
The following is an excerpt of an interview on CBS with the daughter of the Rev. Billy Graham following the 9/11 attack in the U.S.
Jane Clayson: I’ve heard people say, those who are religious, those who are not, if God is good, how could God less this happen? To that, you say?
Anne Graham Lotz : I say God is also angry when he sees something like this. I would say also for several years now Americans in a sense have shaken their fist at God and said, God, we want you out of our schools, our government, our business, we want you out of our marketplace. And God, who is a gentleman, has just quietly backed out of our national and political life, our public life. Removing his hand of blessing and protection. We need to turn to God first of all and say, God, we’re sorry we have treated you this way and we invite you now to come into our national life. We put our trust in you. We have our trust in God on our coins, we need to practice it.
Couldn’t an omnipotent deity just take the time to write a viewpoint on CNS, start his or her own Facebook group or better yet, put an editorial in every newspaper around the world simultaneously? Communicating through the medium of shifting tectonic plates is so prone to misinterpretation. Think about it. If your child misbehaves, do you sneak into their room at night, shake the bed a bit and rearrange the furniture? Might it not be simpler to communicate a bit more directly. When (if) the newschools are built will they have a wobbly detention room to deter students from future infractions?
Science has come up with a perfectly reasonable explanation for earthquakes and it doesn’t conflict with (sensible) Christian beliefs. If you truly believe that you God is threatening you, move to Ireland; I believe that is the country with the least number of earthquakes. Living next to a fault line is asking for trouble! And, although we could be engulfed by a very large tsunami it is not too likely. Waves build height in shallow water, we are surrounded by deep water with a very narrow shelf. You’re more at risk from the average Nor’ Wester.
Re: God and Cayman
Wait a minute now …
If I am understanding correctly – are we saying that during the period of the early stages (the hay day) particularly of our lucrative banking industry – where we were literally washing the dirty and bloody money of brutal international drug cartels, genocidal regimes and corrupt money hungry politicians who collectively were responsible for the murders, deaths, starvation and hardships of MILLIONS of people, and living lavishly off of its proceeds – that was a matter of God "blessing" the Cayman Islands!?
This has always confused me!
Caymanians continually hark on about us being a "Christian nation" which as a result has been "blessed" with wealth and a high standard of living.
This suggests that one should ignore the realities behind this "success" of a nation to even begin to make sense of that perspective.
Take your heads out of your buttocks people – turn off the TV, pick up a book, click on to a documentary – try to understand the true history and workings of the global financial market so hopefully we can quit with this absurd method of reasoning.
This is a corrupt, murderous, predatory and blood sucking world in which we live – and Cayman is dead smack in the middle of it. Regardless of how one argues the point there is no getting around this shameful reality.
Anyway, natural disasters and bad things happen every day in different parts of the world – consider the monsoon flooding that the poor people in India have to endure EVERY SINGLE YEAR without fail – killing thousands of innocent and already suffering people in the process.
I always say that it is a crying shame that the sequence of religion / faith compared to scientific knowledge was a cruel joke played upon humanity. Many of us got to this illogical and paranoid state of mind simply as a result of thousands of years of human ignorance.
Sadly, today many of us still refuse to upgrade to the new chip.
This is not evidence or proof of one’s faith folks – instead its known as stagnancy.
God bless?
All this God talk is a horrifying indictment of the Cayman education system.
Lol!!
Beans…Kurt vs Mac wrestling match…spending too much time under the big white tent?!
LMAO!!
At least many of us still have a sense of humor in these trying times!
:o)
This is a reminder that God is watching every soul on this world and no country or set of pepple are more prefered than the other. Not long ago we in this country look down our proverbial noses on countries in this reigon but rememember : treat your fellow man right whether thy be rich or poor, black, yellow, white, copper coloured, whether they are from east , west north south, central or in between. These are sign from God. We are only an Island you never know when you or your children , grand or great grand children may have to reside in another country or take refuge there. You have seen the erosion of the economy, we could be seeing taxes soon. We have seen the rise in crime , unheard of in the island before, three earthquake in one year. the lesson? We are all in the same world togather and subject to the same problems. Love one another even if they are different from you. The prayers amongst us are saving us through intersessionary prayers and love .
I found the Big White Tent part pretty funny too!!
Response to "People, pay close attention," you are so right, Caymanians, heed Gods’ warnngs, remember everything here on earth is only for but a period of time, but what the Almighty has promised us is for eternity.
I must have missed this promise for eternity. When was it made to me?
It that’s the case it appears the Tibetans have the right idea. I may give their god a call and say hello.
Or maybe just leave a message.
This isn’t a balanced view at all! Your view is lop-sided!
To: This isn’t a balance view….. I so wanted to do the thumbs down but I was too angry and did the thumbs up because your post really made me soooo confuseddddd…Listen stop with your ignorance and go read the Holy book to gain wisdom and understanding of what is really happening around us today!!
May God bless you and be merciful on you!
I tried your suggestion. I read a lot of bronze age myths in the first half, a middle section that was a few dramatized biographies, and an ending that was a bit like the last Indiana Jones movie – ie a bit too sci-fi in the context of the rest of the plot. Not sure where I was meant to understand the impact of tectonics and social factors leading to crime from all of this.
Thumbs up, thumbs down, those opposable thumbs are a result of evolution . . . .
Didn’t feel a thing!
We need to pray for Cayman… Hopefully we will not have to endure the kind of destruction to lives and infrastructure as other countries have.
Yes Chile and Haiti obviously didn’t pray enough to stop the earthquakes effecting them.
Notice that the first poster in no way linked amount of prayer to level of damage. Verb (1) pray; Verb (2) hope. Two different ideas; unless of course you’re an anti-religous bigot looking to further your own perception of people. (Like I have just done.)
I was gonna say. I bet everyone of them were praying as it was happening. Prayer really helps!
People, pay close attention to these earthquakes! Notice how gently God is trying nudge us in the right direction??
Others have been given the full rath of Hiim because they have continued for so long to allow the devil to breed deep into their nations heart!
Cayman was a very God fearing nation up until just in the last decade have we suddenly become so arrogant and foolish – even with those who we have elected to lead us!! We need to pray for God’s mercies. But I guarantee you He ain’t happy by what He is seeing with here, there and everywhere, for that matter.
Haiti and Chile – were hit in the hearts of their nations – not 200 miles out to sea – but smck dab in their nations lifeline!!
Pray we don’t have another quake – especially one that produces a tsunami – because where are we to run Dart’s lookout tower or Mt. Trashmore???
Yep those Chilians are wicked and obviously deserved this!
Get a grip please, you’ve been hanging around the big white tent to much.
Your wrong, the Chile earthquake was out AT sea and in an UNPOPULATED area, not downtown Satiago!
You certainly are arrogant and foolish if you think an earthquake is God casting a spell on us.
"Others have been given the full rath of Hiim because they have continued for so long to allow the devil to breed deep into their nations heart!"
That is a sick comment. God has nothing to do with Tectonic plates, apparently the devil is breeding hate in your heart.
You’re entitled to your opinion but I think it’s caused by the Earth’s plates shifting along or parallel to an undersea fault. Just in case it isn’t. Pray for me.
where to start? actually why bother. The writers stupidity is only bested by his ignorance and evil tongue. I truely hope he has written this with a witty wry smile but i fear he may actaully believe some of this tosh. Please tell me you’re kidding.
Your god appears to be a very nasty piece of work and i am very pleased he has no place in my life. I quite like the Christian god, he seems a friendly enough fellow but i have no idea who you appear to be worshipping. He sounds more like the satan than any kind of God.
To say that Chile is ungodly is absolutely ridiculous and unashamedly offensive, they are a kind and good natured country with exception kindness to strangers unlike many of our fundamentalist Caymanians here. I fear your definition of godly is the problem here. Perhaps they don’t sleep with partners other than their wives and perhaps they don’t pour scorn on all other human beings but they can still be good fundamentalist christians right?
May satan have pitty on your soul as you are surely heading that way my friend. Imagine saying that these poor victims deserved their fate! Unbelievable and Disgusting at the same time
Cobblers!!!!
It looks like lead and other heavy metals have been seeping into the water supply from Mt Trashmore for sure!
Keep believin and paying the ten per cent!
Trust me its nothing about praying, yes it will help. but remember this, the world was meant to come to an end for a new begging, am sure you are aware of that…so in this case just be ready.
And here we thought Kurt and Big Mac were having a smackdown…
I live in BT and I have been feeling tremors almost every morning. I am suprised nobody else has been feeling them.
Tremors is not my type, but I am glad you two are getting along so well…
That’ll be the DT’s, lay off the booze the night before
Lay off the beans.
You know what I agree with you! To this day I still believe I felt a tremor one night while I was asleep in bed. The vibration and rumbling sound woke me up. But I wasn’t sure if I had just dreamed it or if it did happen. Who knows. It was a night or two after that one that was recorded on the Friday night in February I think…can’t really remember…but then again…maybe I was just dreaming…
No wonder! I thought my legs were a bit shaky for a moment. I’m just happy that I’m not crazy or sick after all and that Cayman made it past another tremor. God bless us all!
Looks like this part of the world is shifting. Maybe we will keep getting these until things settle.
Thank God for his mercies extended to us once again; others were not so furtunate so lets do all we can to help.
Some of us felt it in our office but not everyone did. The lady sitting across from me didn’t feel a thing! That’s what made me wonder if I was losing my mind when I jumped out of my seat like someone had giving me an electric shock! I had my keys and cell phone in my hand! I was ready to run! Scary I tell you! Seriously contemplating taking my computer nearer to the exit and working from there in case I need to make a hasty retreat!!
never run for an exit in an eartquake. The duration is lasts means you will have no chance of getting out if the building does partially collapse.
Always duck under your desk and cover your head or hld yourslef in postion so you don’t shake away from the desk, until the earthquake ends then evacuate the building.
Most of those who die are from head wounds while running to an exit
Thanks for the good advice. I’ll have to try and stay more focused the next time. It’s just kind of hard to concentrate on what is the sensible thing to do when there’s two floors above me and all I can think about is how far away from my desk the exit is and the two floors above.
