Teen prisoner lost & found

| 21/06/2010

(CNS): Update 2:00 pm –  Police have said they are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape of a 16-year-old prisoner from West Bay police station at about 10:45 this morning (Monday 21 June). The juvenile reportedly made his bid for freedom down Reverend Blackman Road towards Birch Tree Hill Road. The young inmate was eventually rearrested after a full scale hunt in the area lasting around two hours. The young prisoner is currently on remand having recently been charged with robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.

The charges relate to an armed robbery at Mostyns Esso in Bodden Town on Friday 11 June. The teenager and three others who were suspected of committing the offense were chased by police as they made their escape from the gas station in a stolen vehicle.

During the chase when the offenders abandoned the getaway vehicle in the Lower Valley area shots were fired on police as they gave chase on foot before two of the suspects were arrested. Police then arrested two other men in the Prospect area a few days later. However, so far the teenager is the only suspect that has been charged in connection with the crime.

Who gives a 16 year old boy cigarettes?

Oh for goodness sake! Would you all just let it go? Stop complaining about this and that about the police, try offering some worthwhile suggestions to help improve the RCIPS. Frankly I think we’d be seeing better results if we actually stood behind them and supported them instead of running them into the ground every minute.

Yes, the prisoner escaped. Yes, not very re-assuring and yes, they shouldn’t have let it happen. Yes, I’ll be the first to admit that the RCIPS needs to make serious improvements. But how but thinking "Hmmm…how can I do my part to help them improve and thus help society improve?" instead of only having negative things to say.

I said it before and I’ll say it again…this is not a war between police and criminals with the rest of society stuck on the side-lines. This is a war between the criminals and the police AND the rest of society. The police are our allies and if we don’t support them (even when they’ve made a mistake or experienced a setback) how can we expect to win the war? Think about that.

Said "prisoner" was taken outside to an outside location for a cigarette break when he took advantage of a distracted officer and made his escape over a fence.  He was apparently handcuffed in front of his body at the time and was not restrained in any other way and was able to affect his escape because the police officer was unable to scale the same fence and give chase…

Gives one a real good safe feeling, knowing the RCIPS is on the ball!!

It is a sin to threat a poor 16 year old inhumanely.  He has to be pampered, powered an massaged.  The only problem we have here, when it comes to dealing with criminals, is that the courts doesn’t deal with the individual irrespective of age.  If he commits a crime, he should serve the time.  Any criminal irrespective of age should be dealt the extent of the law.  The USA makes no adjustment to law because of age.

Here we go again. After we apprehend this XXXX individual, we let him escape. But we are pleased that we have recaptured him…  What in the blue blazes is going on in our police force?

Wow – sad that a 16 year old can manage to outplay police.

Please make the parents pay for the cost involved chasing down the escaped child!

How do you "lose" a prisoner? If he was handcuffed, how’d he manage to escape and run away from police?

Thankfully, they managed to "find" him fairly quickly.

How did this little bou get away from the police in the first place? That is the question.

  9. Anonymous says:

Is this the same 16 year old that is being held for attempted murder after allegedly shooting at the Police?

One would think he would not be given the chance to escape. When is Cayman going to start using proper arm and leg shackles when transporting prisoners?

I actually agree, there is nothing wrong with using such devices for transport. they use them in most places, there is no reason why we should have children running away from police custody and wasting precious time through search efforts. It’s just sad.

They should also start dressing them in some bright coloured clothing so that they could be easily identified.
