    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17922-carrying-a-gun-increases-risk-of-getting-shot-and-killed.html

Want to carry a gun?  Increase your chance of being shot over 4 times and your chance of being killed by 4.5 times.

    Guns.  Bad.  More guns.  Worse.

  2. Tracy from Swamp says:

We are tired of hearing about gas station robberies, that has become a  part of the daily life in Cayman, wouldn’t you agree?

    • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Re: "La La Land on Mon, 07/12/2010 – 15:22"

Clearly "La La Land" is not tired of the robberies.

      • Turtle's Head says:

Probably LaLa is more concerned about making a bad situation worse – and more guns will just lead us down a path to more gun crime.

        • Halifax says:

Tired of hearing about guns as a solution. We have armed officers already patroling the streets and still matters have not improved.

The crime in the Cayman Islands run deep and are linked to people’s needs and societal conditions. Maybe we should study more on improving people’s behavior, especially the youngsters and how we as a society can make a difference. We have the funds. We have the facilities. Let us better them and use what we got!

And Dennie, I have to say this to you, Policing and guns is one solution only that is but 5% effective than the 95% or larger pie of the solution you find in conseling, rehab, and social programs. If you can’t see the larger % then you offer really no solution for the Cayman Islands.

          Peace

          • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

I have spoken about the other components before.  However, I’m focusing on two neglected areas: private self protection and the low number of police officers armed with firearms.  You help me with these issues and I help you with the others.

According to the testimony in the Legislature recently, there are four (4) armed officers patrolling the streets at any one time, that low number is hardly enough to truly be a deterrent or effective.  The police must be able to actually respond to a firearm incident in any of the districts within a reasonable time and have a much better chance of capturing the criminals before 99% of them escape to continue a life of crime.

The strategy of the RCIPF is not working, now they want to take away our right to a jury of our peers.  Not good!

  3. Logical Thinking says:

"but it is understood that the suspect did not wear a mask"

What an incompetent island this is, all the way around.  Two days ago, a man robs a store (no mask on supposedly) and the police can’t release footage from the cameras installed.

Do you realize in most places of the world, this man’s picture would have have made the news the next broadcast, with the police asking for help?  I am really sick and tired of the incompetence or just plain stupidity, BUSINESS OWNERS release the footage the RCIPS is not going to help you catch criminals, so start asking directly for the public’s help if you want it.

What in all that is holy is going on in this country. I can’t understand why day after day we continue to have crime of this magnitude on an island which averages about 20 miles long by six miles wide. Is it not time for the guardians of law and order to get their act together or are they just plain incompetent, which for one moment I don’t believe!

    • Anonymous says:

OK. So what other explanation do you have for our "guardians" ineffectiveness and the rampant crime?

  5. Anonymous says:

What, the robber made his escape on a bicycle!

Now, this is serious, we must outlaw all bicycles because it a "thing" used to commit a crime.

Any “thing” a criminal uses to commit a crime must be outlawed because all “things” used in criminal activity are fundamentally bad, RIGHT?

    OR

If criminals are the real problem then RCIP must focus on criminals and not on “things” used by criminals to commit crimes, RIGHT?

    • Turtle's Head says:

Just come out of the gun-loving closet.

We get what you are saying, but bicycles don’t kill people, guns do.

      • Anonymous says:

        guns dont kill people.

        people kill people.

        • Bill says:

Not all people kill people.  Criminals and people defending themselves (or others) from criminals kill people.

I have guns and have never killed anyone.

But I would, if the needs of defence so required.

          • Anonymous 10 says:

            Dear Bill,

Just know that by having a gun, in the US at least, even with those intentions, you are 4 times more likely to be killed by gun shot from someone else than someone who does not have a gun.

            • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Would you please provide us with the facts which support such a view?

              • Anonymous says:

"In another life", I was licensed to carry a concealed weapon. As part of my training to prepare myself to carry a gun, I took courses and obtained certification in handgun use, gun laws and fire-arms-based self defense. In addition, I took courses in conflict resolution and courses in weapons-based tactical training.  Back then most such courses were taught by law enforcement officers and military personnel. The concept I quoted came up over and over in those courses.

I am confident that in a gun-gun confrontation with the average gun-toter, the other guy is at least four-times more likely than I to depart in a body bag. I have bet my life on that proposition on more than one occasion. I am still alive and don’t have any bullet holes in me. Do you need any other "facts" , Dennie, or will this do?

                • Turtle's Head says:

The study in the link at the top of the thread is a good place to start.  People typically over-estimate their proficiency with weapons and under-estimate the increased risk to them (and their loved ones) if a fight is put up (ie lives are risked to defend property).

Saying that, your post shows the kind of downright foolhardiness which leads to death and serious injury since from your post the indicators are your active experience of gun use in live situations is not existent.

            • Anonymous says:

Those statistics only apply to people who are not properly and thoroughly trained in the use of a firearm in a self-defense situation. In a gun-gun conflict the well-trained and mentally prepared virtually always walk away unharmed.

Most gun-gun confrontations among civilians in the U.S. do not involve individuals trained in the effective and prudent use of their weapon.

            • Bill says:

I don’t believe that for a second.  Not one second.

I don’t know where you heard this drivel, or if you just made it up, but my ability to effectively and safely shoot my would-be killer renders me quite a bit safer than my unarmed friends.

Now be honest: did you hear this in a bar, or did you just make it up?

        • La La Land says:

People with guns find killing people and robbing from people much easier.

      • Anonymous says:

"Guns kill people" is the about the absolutely stupidest thing that anyone can say. It just shows ignorance. When I hear people spewing that tripe it make me want to puke.

I was raised around guns – lot of them. I never felt those guns had any intention of harming me. My guns never threatened me and certainly did not kill me. If guns kill people then statistically I surely would have encountered at least one of those "bad" old murderous guns that kill people, but I never did.

Lots of times those guns were tools that helped put food in my plate. And I felt quite secure knowing that if a thug off the street happened to wander in through a window at night, odds are he would be departing in a body bag soon after the dog started barking as there was a loaded gun under every occupant’s bed and we were all very well trained in their (proper) and accurate use in a self-defense situation.

sound like a moron with an axe to grind rather than finding solution in the problems faced by cayman. this attitude is part of teh challenge cayman faces.

      • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

In your view, what are the solutions?

        • Arnie says:

          Dennie:

I am not part of the prior chain, but you can have my thoughts.

I doubt that criminals would choose to pull an armed robbery for a few hundred dollars if there was a reasonably significant chance that the owner or the staff or the security guards were both armed and legally entitled to use deadly force to repel an armed robber, and were wearing a pair large enough to see the trigger pulled.

If they are stupid enough to still do it, well there’s 23 pairs of chromosomes that the world will do well not to keep in the gene pool.

          • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Agreed, the cost of doing crime is too inexpensive.

Section 18(1)(a) of the Firearms Law (2008 Revision) reads: "No person shall discharge any [licensed] firearm on or within forty yards of any public road or in any public place except in the lawful protection of his person or property or of the person or property of some other person"  That is the current law.

            • Turtle's Head says:

We all know you parrot out your view about this section of the law, but ask any decent lawyer, and they will tell you that your interpretation is completely nonsense.  All s.18(a) does is give rise to a defence to a charge of discharging a weapon within forty yards of the highway, nothing more.

              • Decent Lawyer says:

Mr. Head, you are correct.  The issue considered in the subsection is very narrow and only deals with the specific issue of the prohibition on gun use near the highway.  It does not have any wider use, and Mr. Warren’s repeated postings on that subsection are, to use the technical legal phrase, utter garbage.

PS I only have over twenty years of experience in the field and a law degree from Oxford where I obtained a first in criminal law (technically it was an alpha because that it how they grade individual subjects there – just in case the pedant police are on patrol).

                • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

My view is that within forty yards of a public place, should a licensee find it necessary to use a lawfully owned firearm, in accordance with s.18, to prevent or stop an aggravated burglary, rape, or murder, doing so would be lawful.  Just like the text says.

        • La La Land says:

Not giving in to the gun-toting lobby is at least a start.

          • Dennie Warren Jr. says:

Of course not, because you prefer others to be perpetual victims.

            • La La Land says:

No, I would prefer that there are not more guns on the island and more victims of gun crime.  Your plan is self-defeating.  Look at America.

    • A Guy says:

What the hell are you talking about?
