(CNS): An armed robber was foiled last night by a restaurant worker who threw a spoon at the culprit after he stole money from a female customer at Liberty’s Restaurant. According to the police report, at about 10 last night (Friday 20 August) a man armed with what appeared to be a handgun and wearing a mask entered the restaurant on Rev Blackman Road, West Bay, grabbed up the money of a female customer, who was at the counter preparing to pay her bill. He then went into the kitchen and demanded money from a male attendant at the restaurant, who threw a spoon at him. The robber ran off with the money towards Hell Road on foot.

No shots were fired and no-one was injured in the incident. The suspect is described as being 5′ 5” -5’ 6” in height, dark complexion, and slim built. He was wearing a red shirt, long jeans pants, and had a bandanna over his face from above his nose down. West Bay detectives are appealing for witnesses from anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery and saw the incident or the man leaving the scene who are asked to call West Bay CID on 949-3990 or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-TIPS (8477).

"The robber ran off with the money towards Hell Road on foot". How ironic is this parallel to Cayman of the last 35 years – running off with the money on the road to Hell. We’re getting there, friends, we’re getting there!

Luckily the criminal exercised good judgment and didn’t overly .react . As the learned Dr. White aptly pointed  out" thieves are becoming more rational". A couple of dollars vs. a human life or at the very least being shot at. I say let them have the money. Try and think first. The spoon thrower was lucky this time, but things could have been very different. Remember these criminals are not trained firearm experts they come from the school of point and shoot. WE all get angry and react differently but lets try and think first.

That’s right you heard it here first, don’t put a gun in your house but make sure you have a spoon. That way your children are safe but not the burglars.

My, My, what is this island coming to?   Until we reduce the number of work permits and put some of these people to work this will only get worse.

My real concern thought is where are the police when they are needed, they never around when they are needed most – mind yah the police station is only yards away from this restaurant.

I wish the answer was as simple as reducing work permits.

Unfortunately you have it all turned around.

Reducing work permits reduces the population, which decreases employment.

Less people living here equals less people spending money, renting homes, driving cars, eating out, etc. That in turn slows down business for everyone. When business is slow people are let go and the businesses spend less. As they spend less other business suffer and so on. Pretty soon nobody wants to spend what little cash they have and more businesses close down.

Without homes and apartments being rented and with mortgages to pay, the owners begin selling their property, but without tenants to pay the mortgage no one wants to buy and real estate prices drop. That stops new construction and even more people lose their jobs.

With employment down and property values dropping rental prices fall and the few businesses that are hiring reduce the salary offered and employees earn less. That in turn reduces how much the can pay for rent or a mortgage and property values drop even more.

Unfortunately since very few businesses are hiring work permits are not being renewed either. So all of the above is happening. You can correlate the drop in the economy to the 6,000 work permits that haven’t been renewed over the last 2 years.

You should be asking for more work permits, thousand more. Not less.

The economy will not magically get better just by waiting. Unfortunately we may have “protected” ourselves right out of business.

The men that are using a gun to rob people are not looking for a job and wouldn’t take one if it was offered. They have found a simpler way to get money: Just grab it and run.
Earning money is hard work, not just for people, but for the country as well.

If you don’t mind, could you please explain how reducing the number of work permits will put these people to work? I’m genuinely trying to understand your logic so that I may understand how things work.

These people is taking this as a joke now because this is how many robberies for this week and how many have been caught . They will not stop on till the owners and works of these properties decided to take them out one by one. Its Just a matter of time for it to happen enough is enough.

Sadly true. Many people have forgotten that there is nothing more dangerous than a desperate middle-class. Whether it be revolutions or self defence history isn’t written about what happens when thieves get fed up, its written about what happens when the victims get fed up.
