Count extended for refusers

| 24/11/2010

(CNS): Although the country’s census workers hadmanaged to reach 90 percent of the population of the Cayman Islands by the time the 2010 national count officially ended yesterday, the ESO has decided to extend the census for two more weeks. As a result of a number of people who have refused to answer and a few who have been away, workers will be revisiting several households. Census Manager Elizabeth Talbert told CNS that the ESO has never before filed charges against anyone for non-compliance, and would prefer not to have to do so. She said she hoped the remaining two weeks would give the people chance to reconsider and comply with the law.

“We are willing to send a different enumerator to them if their refusal is based on the personality of the enumerator that was assigned to their area, or we could arrange to have them fill in the form themselves and submit it directly to the ESO if their concern is confidentiality,” Talbert said hoping to encourage the last remaining households to join in. “We are hoping that this final appeal will encourage the non-respondents to comply.”

She said anyone who had not yet taken part could call the Census Office in their respective area and arrangements will be made to get them enumerated. Census workers will now be returning to all of the households that have refused to cooperate as well as those that have been away. “The overall response has been really very good, but we must reach everyone,” Talbert added.

The count began on 10/10/10 with the goal of counting 100 percent of the islands’ households and as close to 100 percent participation in the actual census as possible. The ESO was at pains to emphasize the confidentiality of the count and the increase in penalties for any breach of confidentiality, as well as the extensive training the 300 enumerators had undergone before the census began.

District Census Offices are open Monday-Saturday 8:30am-8 pm.

I understand that the human factor may have missed a few here and there. I believe that we have a lot of illegals here who will be dodging this no matter how long you extend this deadline .There are always a margin of errors about polls, census. I have said it over and over again publish those whom you know are illegally here either by name or photo. Many have fallen thrue the cracks that unless they take a trip off island they simply don’t exist.WE have submitted names of persons known to be involved in marriage of convenience to addicts, poor persons etc for monetary gains and we still see them around. What are we to do ? Further more they run a business with no licence take away jobs and bring in their buddies but worst laugh in our very own face. So I suggest that you settle for a percentage and call it done. I believe that we can have as many 1,000 illegals. yep you read right. i hope I am wrong but prove it to me.Someone at Immigration, not paid residency Evident marriage of convenience nows. Help us help you by at least producing names and forget that we will be shocked by the#.Just those awating for their appeal that they know will never qualify for res.Killing time sending $ back home. Oh! I won’t charge you for this input.wer’e beyond being shocked!

Everyone just needs to shut the %#$@ up about the census and just do it! It’s our obligation as residents. The way some people complain or refuse to do it, you would think the have to fill out a census form every day of their lives. You won’t have to see this again for quite sometime right? So just do it.

90% is pretty good – why are we wasting money trying to get 100% when we know that’s impossible?

I also understand there are pockets of individuals that they cannot account for – living in structures that do not "exist" on any official documents. CNS can you find out the true story with that?

People. A census is vital to a country so the country can forecast the necessary infrastructure required to sustain growth and provide the necessary services, roads, medical facilities, schools and as "Your an idiot" said, economic indicators to access the standard of living in Cayman, etc. etc.! Please do your part. Of course their are many uneducated, ignorant people out there who will refuse to participate, that too in itself will help the country to access the education system. Therefore I suspect that it is impossible to canvass 100% of the population, yet how do we know if we canvassed 90% of the population if we don’t know what the population is? Perhaps the immigration department has records of how may individuals are legally resident on the island? I suppose it will be necessary to indicate a margin of error of +/- 10% perhaps.

They never even came by our house or called to say they were coming. So maybe they’re just not doing their job.

They came round our house a couple of weeks ago but the head of the household was out.  They said they’d come back but never did – I seriously hope they don’t call that a refusal to co-operate.

It is my understanding that you could extend the census until doomsday and the answers will be the same. There is a percentage of the population that will not abide with the census.

The census is NOT confidential so I dont know who they think they are fooling – they are taking names and putting them on the form so how the hell can it be confidential.

Just give the enumerators any b…..s answer they wont know if you are telling the truth or not – the questions are stupid anyhow – who the hell cares how many tvs or computers a household has and how the heck will they know if you have answered truthfully or not. Just give them an answer and send them on their merry way.

    • You're an idiot... says:

You’re an idiot. Questions such as how many tv’s/ computers in a household are questions that when answered, provide vital indicators which assess how a country’s population is living. It takes into account not only technology margins of a country, but also a country’s development etc. So stop acting like your so smart and maybe read a book. Oh and, don’t forget to answer that census as well! I’d hate to be a Caymanian who’s money is being used to pay for you while in prison 🙂

      • Just Askin' says:

But what if all the computers and TV’s, etc in my household are stolen? How does knowing how many of them I have help them in their assessment? They didn’t ask if I purchased them.

A census is little more than a very expensive guess.

just out of curiosity- why would you want to do that? i mean, what are you gaining by lying? i’m just trying to understand. if it doesn’t matter how many tv’s you havem why not tell the truth?
