Work with Eminem earns JG grammy nominations

| 07/12/2010

(CNS): Caymanian musician Jason Gilbert (known as JG) has been nominated for two Grammy awards for his work as a producer on Eminem’s latest album. The 27-year-old singer/songwriter from George Town, who divides his time between Miramar, Florida, and the Cayman Islands, is up for Album of the Year and the Best Rap Album for his contribution to Eminem’s Recovery album, for which he wrote and produced the song WTP (White Trash Party). The producer, who has never actually met Eminem, first came to the rapper’s attention after sending several of his self-penned tracks to Eminem’s management team a year ago.

The move, orchestrated by fellow producer Supa Dub’s manager, resulted in JG’s song WTP becoming track five on the 16-track Recovery album, which has been high in the charts since it was released in June. The album has garnered 10 Grammy nominations.

JG, who also fronts the Caymanian band ThE iZ, and had a hit with Summer is Over on his 2007 solo album, The Mind of Jason Gilbert, said he was still in shock since finding out that he’s up for the music industry’s most prestigious accolades. He confirmed that he’ll be attending the 53rd annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 13 February, when he’ll get to meet Eminem.

The double nominations, which mark a first for a Caymanian, came as a “total surprise”, the young producer said in a release. “I feel truly blessed to be in a position to have accomplished such great accolades in something I love,” JG said. “This is not only a milestone for me but for everyone around me.”

In the Grammy’s Best Album of the Year category, JG and the album’s co-producers are up against: The Suburbs by Arcade Fire; Need You Now by Lady Antebellum; The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga; and Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Other contenders for Best Rap Album are The Adventures of Bobby Ray by B.o.B; Thank Me Later by Drake; The Blue Print by Jay-Z; and How I Got Over by The Roots.

The producer said he will be flying back to Grand Cayman on Wednesday, 8 December, to finish up recording an as yet untitled album with ThE iZ at Hopscotch Studios

Is this the same Jason who has been working as La Familia Productions for the past few years? If so, I was hoping that it was just a matter of time he hit success because his productions have been world-class. Congratulations!

If it’s not the same Jason, congrats nevertheless, this is an awesome achievement. You’re up against some stiff competition but best of luck in actually winning the Grammy.

Fellow Caymanian musicians please let this be a lesson that originality and quality is what will bring success, not doing Bob Marley and soca covers forever or making outrageous demands. Now, radio stations, please give good local music more airplay than you do (Radio Cayman keep up your exposure – you’ve been great). Finally, CMEA please revisit that strange arrangement you negotiated with the radio stations for one local song per hour with no announcement as to who the artist is. How can people buy the music if they don’t know who to ask for??

    • Patricia X says:

Can the CMEA deal be scrapped because I know many of us can’t stand the noise of bad soft reggae songs about "welcome to the lovely Cayman Islands . . ."

Congratulations Jason, we are proud of you. This should be an encouragement for all  especially ones that have great gifts of talent that hard work and dedication pays off. You’re at the top of our charts.

  14. whodatis says:

    Hmmm…

     – World Champion Athlete? Check!

     – Famous supermodel / actress / icon? Check!

     – World class quality musician? Check!

     – Hollywood endorsed producer / director? Check!

Not too bad tiny Cayman … not too bad at all.

    🙂

Congrats Jason, all the best for your nomination and future.

    • Reality Check says:

      Well we do have :

      – A Victoria’s Secret model.

      and

      – One of the 15 co-producers of an Eminem album.

But that is as far as it goes on your list.

      – A Commonwealth Gold is a great achievement but it not close to a World Championship.

      – I don’t really know what "Hollywood endorsed" is even meant to mean.

Let’s give great work credit, but let’s not make stuff up either.

    • Try Again says:

      World Champion athlete, who?

Supermodel/Actress, etc. Made famous by taking her clothes off in public, what would Jesus think?

World Class Musician? Show me the money.

Hollywood endorsed producer? B list maybe.

  15. Tamara says:

The category is tight but it feels good to know that he has been nominated among the best.

It has been a long time coming but knew you would have reach there someday.

    Many blessing to JG!!!!

  19. Anonymous says:

Congratulations! Join the extraordinary Caymanian achievers such as

    Selita Ebanks

    Frankie Flowers Jr.

    Cydonnie Mothersill

You all make us proud to be Caymanians!

    • IRON CLAD says:

… To mention a few above!!!

However, let’s not forget two more Caymanian Doctors that have returned home as Top Docs.

Let’s not forget several our college students in some International Colleges in the US or elsewhere who have attained Top honors and in some cases in a period of the school’s history and so on.

Let’s not forget our two most recent additions to our list of Caymanian pilots… These two pilots, who are an exceptionally young and newly married couple.

And I could list some more deserving of the same honors.

So are we still saying that Caymanians are uneducated and lazy? Or has it been a "White Trash Party" all along?

  20. Anonymous says:

How could anyone possibly dislike your status? Some people are just haters….

      • Anonymous says:

Nobody really hates him for what he has achieved, they just want to rile up, frustrate and pick on easily excited people like you. But some of them have it in for Caymanians  as a whole, they just cant understand why we are so successful with our low key and everything in moderation approach.

    • Anonymous says:
