Kittiwake comes sailing in on Christmas morning

| 25/12/2010

(CNS): The ex USS Kittiwake has finally arrived in Grand Cayman. The former American naval ship which is to be sunk in order to create a new dive attraction arrived in local waters just before noon on Christmas morning. After seven years of planning and many months of delays and postponements the ship is expected to be sunk some time over the next few days off the north-west end of Seven Mile Beach. The long awaited arrival is a combination of efforts by the department of tourism and the private sector tourism body CITA.

Check back to CNS for more details of when the ship will be sunk

VERY nice! I saw it coming in that day and watched with fascination and I’m looking forward to viewing the sinking and also diving the site.

I’ve been looking forward to this sinking for a long time.  CNS – please post any information you have available.  After all this planning and delays, it seems like there’s a very casual attitude about the eventual sinking: "..sometime in the next few days.."  Nancy and the rest who have worked so hard to make this happen should be making as much public noise as possible to promote the event.  I don’t’ want to miss it!

CNS Note: Yes as soon as we get the info CNS will post

Congratulations to Nancy Esterbrook and the other members of the team that will making this 7 year project a reality.

Kittywake is a boost to our dive and snorkle tourism, a good tourism product which will be financed in a sensible way, if ya want to see then help pay for the cost to visit, this is only fair.

Peter Milburn and others for decades have recommended the exact same concept, the Cayman Islands seas is one big marine entertainment national park, charge access, people arround the world pay access to national parks every day.  Why shouldn’t we collect funds to enhance or marine environment then spend those funds on the purpose that they were collected for?

This wreck will be a fantastic new and popular dive site full of new experiencies, as a hobby diver I look forward to the first dive.
