Premier’s daughter passes

| 25/01/2011

(CNS): Update Thursday 9:55pm – Messages of condolence have poured into the CNS comment board for the family of Tonya Yvonne Anglin, daughter of Premier McKeeva Bush and his wife, Kerry Bush, who died Tuesday morning. The messages have come from friends and family, including the Cayman Islands honorary consul to Barbados and local businesses and government entities. The governor, the deputy governor and the speaker of the LA have released public condolence messages, as have the chief minister of Montserrat, the acting premier of BVI and the secretary general of CARICOM. Tonya, who was just thirty years old, leaves husband Chet Anglin and daughter Zariah. She died at home and was pronounced dead at 8:30am Tuesday.

"The premier, Mrs Bush, and the family, appreciate the prayers and support of the country during their tragic, difficult loss," a statement from the deputy premier’s office said. "As they cope with this, they also appreciate the public’s understanding and consideration of their need to have an initial time of private mourning."

A statement from the Governor’s Office said Duncan Taylor and his family were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing away earlier today of the premier and Mrs Bush’s daughter Tonya and sent their sincere condolences to the Bush and Anglin families. "Their thoughts are with them during this sad and difficult time," the statement said.

Deputy Governor Donovan Ebanks also released a message to the bereaved families: "The public service is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of the daughter of the Honourable Premier and Mrs Bush. On behalf of the whole public service, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to The Honourable Premier, Mrs Kerry and the rest of the family. We are all numbed by this shocking news. Death is the only certainty in life, but far too often it sneaks upon us when we least expect it.

"I believe that those of us who have been blessed with children will all agree that they redefine the real meaning of ‘love’ – regardless of what we thought that word to mean before they arrived. And while most of us are blessed to not have had the experience of losing a child, I also believe that it is truly the greatest loss that one can experience. I would urge us all to hold up this family in our prayers at this time, and pray that the good Lord will see them through these darkest days,” Ebanks said.

The Office of the Chief Minister of Montserrat, Reuben T Meade, sent the following message: “It is with an overwhelming feeling of sadness that I extend deepest sympathies to Premier the Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, and his wife, Mrs Kerry Bush on the sudden passing of their daughter Tonya Eyvonne Anglin. We in Montserrat also share the grief of the husband and young daughter of Tonya and recognize that a loss at such a tender age as Tonya is unfathomable. On behalf of the Government and people of Montserrat please accept our condolences and be assured that you and your entire family will be in our prayers.”

Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite, Secretary-General of CARICOM sent these words to the bereaved family: “On behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), I wish to extend heartfelt condolences to you and to your family on the passing of your beloved daughter, Ms. Tonya Eyvonne Bush-Anglin.

The thoughts and prayers of the Caribbean Community are with you and your family during this difficult time. The loss of one so young and so vibrant in the Caymanian community creates a void that is difficult to fill, particularly to her husband Chet and daughter, Zariahr and to her parents and sibling. Once again, the Community conveys its deepest sympathies to the Anglin and Bush families. May her soul rest in peace.”

In a letter sent Thursday, Acting Premier of the British Virgin Islands Dancia Penn wrote: "It was with sadness that I learned of the sudden passing of your only daughter, Tonya. The Government and people of the Virgin Islands extend our sincerest condolences to you and your dear wife, Kerry, during what must be a most difficult period so early in this New Year."

The Acting Premier stated that the Premier Honourable Ralph T. O´Neal, OBE, is also "saddened to learn of this heartbreaking news". Honourable Penn asked Premier Bush to convey condolences to his daughter´s husband, Chet Aglin, young daughter, Zariah, and the rest of the family. She ended the letter by stating, "On behalf of the Government and the people of the Virgin Islands, please accept our sympathy and rest assured that we will keep you and the family in our prayers during this time of great loss."

Speaker of the House, Mary Lawrence, and members and staff of the Legislative Assembly said: "We mourn with you today the sudden loss of your beloved daughter Tonya. We pray that God’s peace and love will surround you and the beautiful memories you have of her, will bring comfort to your hearts.

We extend our sympathy too to her beautiful young daughter Zariah, her husband Chet, her brother Barry and his family, her grandmother Mrs. Faith Bush, and all the other family members and friends who were privileged to know this special young woman and share in her brief life. May God bless you all."

I attended the funeral service at the Weslyean Church in West Bay for the premier’s daughter. What a beautiful celebration for the life of Tonya. The choirs were beautiful, the message by Rev Yvette Bloomfield was inspiring and the tribute “Tonya’s Story’ read by Kathy Jackson was so compelling and fun. What a show of support, there were easily 1,500 people in attendance and everything went like clock work. The premier can feel proud that he did his daughter justice in celebrating her life in such a dignified manner. God bless Mr. Bush and his family during this most difficult time in their lives.

  27. Sherry Ann Smith & Family says:

    When tomorrow starts without me,
And I’m not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
    All filled with tears for me;

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry
    The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
    We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
    I know you’ll miss me too;

But when tomorrow starts without me,
    Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready,
    In heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind
    All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye
For all my life, I’d always thought,
    I didn’t want to die.

I had so much to live for,
So much left yet to do,
    It almost seemed impossible
    That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,
The good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.

    If I could relive yesterday,
    Just even for a while,
I’d say good-bye and kiss you
    And maybe see you smile.

    But then I fully realized,
    That this could never be,
    For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things,
    I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
My heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through heaven’s gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
    From His great golden throne,

    He said, "This is eternity,
    And all I’ve promised you.
Today your life on earth is past,
    But here life starts anew.

    I promise no tomorrow,
    But today will always last,
And since each day’s the same way
There’s no longing for the past.

    You have been so faithful,
    So trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things
    You knew you shouldn’t do.

    But you have been forgiven
And now at last you’re free.
So won’t you come and take my hand
And share my life with me?"

So when tomorrow starts without me,
    Don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I’m right here, in your heart.

    RIP Tonya

  30. Carmilee Pearson says:

To Kerry, The Premier, Chet, Zariah:

    When A Mother Cries.

    When a mother cries,
Her tears stab at her daughter’s heart
As they plummet to the floor

    When a mother cries
    Her daughter cries too
She cries because she does not know what is wrong
She cries because she can’t get rid of her mother’s pain
She cries most of all because she loves her mother

When a daughter cries because her mother cries
Her mother cries more She cries because her pain has hurt her daughter. She cries because she does not want to see her daughter cry because of her – She cries most of all, Because she loves her daughter

Once the tears have ceased however, What remains is love
The love forever shared between a mother and a daughter .

    Tonya – pretty and sweet.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the Bush and Anglin Families in this tragic loss of their precious daughter.   May you be comforted by this Psalm of David:

The Lord is my shepherd.  I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.  Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou annointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

You’ll look back on memories you forgot you had,
And at times you’ll smile even though it hurts so bad.

Your mother is a special woman and no one can take her place,
You’ll find peace of mind when you remember her smiling face.

Your mother is an angel now she flies high above the rest,
and in your hearts always and forever she will be the best.

She has earned her wings and it’s time for her to fly,
I know it hurts no one is ever ready to say good-bye.

She knows you do not understand and that you’ll cry at night,
But as you finally drift off to sleep let her memory hold you tight.

She will be your guardian angel through the rest of your life,
Helping lead you on the path between what’s wrong and right.

Your mother loves you so very much and her love will always remain true,
Please don’t ever think for a second that your mother will forget you.

A mothers love is like no other in the whole world,
and she has the most wonderful memories of a little girl.

She has taken them with her as she’s flown away,
Up to Heaven free of pain which is her new home to stay.

So although you will not see her and you wish she could be there,
Your mother will always hear you and your mother will always care.

A mother does not forget the two greatest loves of her life,
And she loved nothing more than being your mommy, and your daddy’s wife.

She is so proud of her family and that’s in her heart to stay,
Even though she’s an angel and has had to fly away.

So as you cry your tears remember your mothers love,
Being sent to you from her, from the beautiful Heaven above.

She will be there through your good times, she will be there through your bad,
She’ll be there when you are happy, she’ll be there when your sad.

Your mother has become an angel now, it is her time to fly,
And you will never know how much it hurt her to watch you have to say good-bye.

I know Mckeeva is no fish fry! He is a man who can cope with any situation. He and his family have endured alot of criticism. As one of his dear critics, seeing how strong of a leader he is, I know for a fact, he will be able to join me next time for a second knock-out!  He is just the kind that will endure a fight to the end!  I prefer no other enemy but big Mac!

Now… as a human being, my condolences and respects to you and your family. We can relate on these grounds.

  51. Matthew Leslie says:

Today an Angel was taken back to heaven.  We lost a person who was a Mother, a Daughter, a Sister, a Cousin, a Niece, and a friend all in one.  Tonya was as vibrant as it came and everyone around her was enlightened.

Today as a Nation we need to come together regardless of whether you are UDP, or PPM and realize we lost a Young Caymanian today.  Keep the Premier and the entire family in our prayers and thoughts.

Yesterday we celebrated our Heroes…today let us celebrate the life of a wonderful young lady.  We love you Tonya….

So nice to see that all are joined in a single voice here. That in and of itself says much of us all and speaks volumes about the true respect everybody feels and shares for the loss the Bush and Anglin families are having to deal with right now.

Remember these thoughts, prayers and feelings going forward, not just in times of loss and sorrow … but every day… that is the best way to show respect and honor.

My own son’s death taught me more about life through his death than I could have otherwise known.  He has shown me in ways that can’t be denied how his spirit has a new body and it is full of light, happiness and beauty.  I hope that you can come to this place of peace realizing your daughter’s new body for her spirit and know that life never ends.  It is the perfect lesson that Jesus taught us from his resurrection if only we acknowledge it.  As you move forward toward some peace in your acceptance of this truth, I wish for you some place of joy in the knowledge that your daughter still lives in a better place and has no more pain and struggle.  This is what we wish for our children even on this planet and so I hope you can find some consolation in this truth.

McKeeva, Kerry, Barry, Chet & Zariah

It is with a lot of sadness in my heart today that I offer my heartfelt, sincere condolences to you and all of Tonya’s beloved family.

Tonya was loved by many because she grew up in a time when "the village still raised the child".  I personally have great memories of my involvement in her life…..from birth to her teenage years.

Her passing has touched the hearts of all who knew her, and even those who did not.  She will be remembered for her loving, outgoing personality.

May God gently carry you all in his arms at this time.  May he ease your pain and bring you comfort to sustain you during your great loss.

My condolences and prayers go out to the Bush/Anglin families. As a father, I  know that having to bury a child is probably the worst thing that a parent will ever have to do in life. It is so good to know that they were such a loving, caring and tight knit family and those very things will help them through this period of bereavement.

To those families out there where the love and care has broken down between the parents and the children or vice versa, I urge you all to find common ground and love for each other. You may never get the chance to ask for forgiveness or to say "Good-bye"," I’m sorry" or just simply "I love you." Life is short and is determined only by God.

    RIP. Tonya

  75. Michel Lemay says:

I think this would be an honorable occasion out of respect to sign your names. While we might have disagreed at times our Premier Mr. Mckeeva and his family are very good people and one of daughters was close to Tonya. I cannot begin to imagine how it feels to lose your child but I do know how I would feel if it was our daughter.

    • Anonymous says:

Dedinately true. Names signed would be more meaningful. I know that this was one of the worst days in the life of Kerry  and Mack. I could not even eat for most of the day, I could only see our Kerrys hurt in my eyes. She is such a good representative for Mack, always minding her own business and never insulting no one who calls on him. I know that God will give you and the rest of the family strength to deal with this, and time will heal. We are sorry that we cannot bear this burden for you. God bless you all is our prayer.

May the family know God’s peace through this challenging time. Death is never easy, but hold on to hope. For them all sorrow and all sighing will be gone forever; only joy and gladness will be there."
