Cameras were working when Anna disappeared

| 08/02/2011

(CNS): The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has admitted that three cameras were not working at the George Town dump on the day that landfill worker Anna Evans disappeared but another six were operational. The department director said the footage from those six cameras had been handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) as part of the DoEH’s efforts to do what it can to support the search. “We have reviewed the relevant footage with the police to see if there were clues regarding what happened to Anna,” said Roydell Carter, the department’s director, who added that staff were offering all the information they could to help the police. He said that when the 37-year-old mother of five disappeared on Thursday, 30 January, three of the cameras were out of action at the time as the department was waiting for parts to arrive but all of them had now been repaired. Carter said the DEH installed the surveillance equipment around the landfill in July 2010 to assist with management and security issues.

Carter also joined with the police in calling for those who were circulating malicious and false rumours via mobile phones to stop. He also asked people to refrain from pointing fingers of accusation at Anna’s colleagues at the landfill.

“These rumours are causing deep distress among the staff; all of Anna’s colleagues are heartbroken over her disappearance,” he added. “We all continue to pray for her return and we will not relent in our effort to provide support for her grieving family and help with this search.”

The police continued their search ten days after Anna disappeared and despite overseas re-enforcements and specialist canine assistance, the RCIPS said there was still no sign of the missing woman.

Anyone with information that could assist the search is urged to call the hotline 526-0911.

A 33.33% failure rate is quite high would you not say?

Let me break it down for those who cannot comprehend and think it’s being picky.

If the dump were divided into ten camera zones, then 3.3 zones would be completely uncovered and unchecked!!!!

That is way to high if it is for safety purposes…..

Just a suggestion for moving forward with policy / camera procedures at the land fill.

Provide a complete review of when the cameras stopped working and why. From the findings, shortfalls can be identified and improved upon.

In future determine how long each camera will be out of operation and notify all employees working in that area to exercise additional safety measures in the meantime.

Follow-up, follow-up and then follow -up again if repairs are taking longer than expected. Remeber the cameras were installed for management & saftey reasons and therefore are essential in protectiong the employees and the employer.

I too agree the rumors need to STOP! Idol gossip hurts everyone involved and impedes on the investigation.

I trust that Anna will be found but in the meantime as a community we need to lift her five children and family members up, assist in helping them, pray for them, or just simply be a shoulder they can lean upon.

Shouldn’t the headline be “Cameras were NOT working when Anna disappeared”!!!!!

depends on which way you read the article. It states that although 3 were not in operation, 6 were.

No need to be picky about every thing – not everybody is as perfect as you

However the news stated that a man on a bicycle was seen there at about the time that Anna went missing

        • Anonymous says:

OK who is the man on a bicycle. Who related or close to Ana rides a bicycle.

What is his identity?  Why don’t the police release the photo of the man the cameras captured so we can  IDENTIFY HIM?

This is making no sense. It seems that the RCIP with info received plus the images captured with the 6 working cameras, that THEY HAVE EVIDENCE OF SOMETHING, but they are just sweating the public.  RCIP SHOW US THE PHOTO OF THE BICYCLE MAN SO WE CAN IDENTIFY HIM

It is not about being picky, cameras were installed "for better management" of the dump. Which wouldmean that goverment is paying someone to not do their job. If this incident did not happen how long would they be not working?  6 out of 9 cameras working is not acceptable. What would your boss say if you were only performing 6 out of 9 duties at your job everyday? You would be fired, right!!!! As there is no need for the "not everybody is as perfect as you" comment. I believe only people suffering from self esteem problems make comments like that. So go and seek help!!!!
