TV company shuffles channels to new slots

| 24/03/2011

(CNS): The islands’ cable television company is moving its channels round, it said Thursday, in order to create a block of network programming in the channel line-up. Next month WestStar TV will move the major US networks to the “20s”alongside the local network channels, making it easier, it claimed, for viewers to move between primetime and the local stations in the evening. Besides placing network channels next to each other Weststar said the reshuffle would also pave the way for more future channels which will be coming soon.

Traci Bradley of Weststar TV said, “As we prepare to launch more channels over the next year, we are looking at our channel line-up and making adjustments so that they make the most sense for viewers. We recognize viewers usually surf the networks in the evening, and now it is easier to quickly compare what’s on.”

Last year Cayman27 and Island24 were moved to the corresponding cable channels and programming on the two channels was re-aligned into two categories: information, and entertainment. Moving the networks complements these changes.

From Friday 1 April CBS will move to channel 22, NBC to 23, ABC to 25 and fox to 28. Meanwhile BBC World will remain at channel 26 along with Island 24 and Cayman 27 remaining in their corresponding channel numbers. Weststar said as a result ofcreating the network block the Seventh Day Adventist channel will move to 2, BET to 4, E! to 5 and VH1 to 12.

All I know is that ESPN has stopped showing sports this week, and all they are showing is women’s basketball.  Can I have a refund?

Fix the Animal Planet guide so that customers can follow and reinstate some of the half decent movie channels that use to be in place. We are now paying for channels (151-161) that are so sub standard there should not be a cost to watch what is shown most times.

Come to find out, it is NOT Weststar making the change, it is the US that is doing it.

    XXXXX

Now why don’t you give us an option of a different region of news besides ONLY Miami (on the major networks), get the volume fixed, the language fixed, the correct program correclation, (Animal Planet) and thanks for finally fixing the time when it was 3-5 minutes off

So for the past HOW MANY YEARS!! you know where the channels are and NOW you’re going to change them to make ti EASIER!!??? Seriously???

Why don’t you just inform everyone how to program their remote to surf only the channels they want!! (Only 35 at a time and that should be expanded!!)

This has to be the stupidest thing yet! It’s taken me this long to get used to Fox being on 12. And I still get that wrong every now and then.

Idiots! They need to be concentratnig on making the quality fit the cost, not removing and moving around the channels

It is highly disappointing that Weststar keeps exchanging good channels like Showtime for lesser quality channels that don’t cost them as much to get the rights for. They should reimburse people for the lesser quality channels. All in the name of profit. When will we be getting more competition? That will fix them!

Perhaps we live in the Caribbean.  I for one am glad I can watch most of the channels I can get in Canada and the States with a fairly relaible service.  What are they supposed to do?  Drop everything that isn’t 100% legitimate and be left with no TV channels I want to watch?  Or no… just put a giant ugly dish in my backyard for DirecTV or Dish that cuts out every time there is rain or cloud cover.  I guess I should move to Canada or the States where they have millions of customers and more reliable service… instead of a small tropical island in the Caribbean.  TV or paradise?  Hmmmmm…. Nevermind… I’ll keep paradise over the trash on TV.

Also get rid of the football cut and paste from ESPN/FSC to Sportmax (which is without doubt the worst quality feed in the history of television). Basically money each month for something that is sub-standard, poor and and pathetic attempt to exhibit local advertising from LIME etc

  8. Cuba1961 says:

Perhaps, as long as the "It’s time to pay your DISH NETWORK fees" warnings stop popping up; I won’t feel so bad about getting ripped off.

What the Television company need to do is start paying there bill on time so when us the paying customer is watching something you dont see a big notice coming up saying please pay bill with Dish Network to avoid disconnection.

I hope they cleared all this technolgy through MsJuju as she is now an expert on all things technological since the ill-fated trip to Barcelona.

Maybe reducing access to idiotic American TV might help the education and literacy standards in the territory.  Why can’t we just get the BBC on a time delay?

Pit Bull, I have been monitoring your ironic posts for some time now and responding to them; they are often stimulating for those of us of ironic bent. I must admit, however, that I have been pondering if you really meant that dreadful nonsense in your first sentence. Dear God, am I wrong in thinking you are sensible enough to be indulging in irony?Your comments about the BBC may have merit, except non blind Brits like myself who have raged against those leftist, Guardian-loving teacup liberal politically correct pro welfare state journalists there that have been allowed to flourish at tax payers’ expense since Thatcher’s day would like a clear out of the Augean stables and balanced journalists put in their place.

And, Pit Bull, are you not proud that the very worst of ‘idiotic American TV” – the reality shows/”talent” shows/humiliation shows started off on BRITISH TV!!

Erm, yes, you’re a teapot then.

I’m a little teapot; short and stout. Here is my handle; here is my spout…

People like Pit Bull need to remember that if it were not for we Americans coming to their aid twice in the last century, their precious BBC would be broadcasting in German or Russian.

      • Pit Bull says:

I can assure you I have never posted ironically.  This is largely because most of the readership would be incapable of identifying irony.  I say it as I see it.

You must find it very trying living here; hopefully you will be going home soon. “For England’s the one land, I know

          • Pit Bull says:

It is always a challenge living in the empire rather than the wonderful home country.  But that has been the challenge faced by many an Englishman over the last few centuries.

Maybe they could bring back my friggin’ Cartoon Network!  How about TruTv that actually shows programs about forensics? Seriously, what does Helicopter Logging have to do with investigative and forensic television? Sure, take away my good stations and bring in the "Watch Paint Dry 24/7" channel. Yeah.

Nobody wants to watch that Japanese animation crap. The new channel is much better.

Possibly good news for local advertisers but dont try and tell me this is good news for the viewing public. We just hate being messed about. Cardinal rule one.

But I agree with the posters comments about the Compass – what a joke. Why doesnt Weststar take it up with them?

  14. Anonymous says:

Maybe you should pay your bills ontime and we not get this sign coming up on our screen saying that ‘please pay your bill to avoid being disconnected’.

You make us sick Westar TV!!!! Daylight robbery.

Also, seeing as we are paying sooo much for this damn service, even though you can never seem to get thru when you call, let me give you 2 pointers that come to mind:-

    1) Please review your customer service programe, when we need our service fixed, note that we all have jobs like you do also, so when you tell us that we will get a call from the service guy, please note that all of us cannot just drop everything and be there in that half hour. I understand that some people require the guy longer at some homes, but for the sake of everyone, give us at least a time frame or an hour or two notice.

    2) PLEASE check in your own homes, I’m talking to the owners and service tech guys, and you will see that each channel is on different volume leverls. Which means that each channel that I change, I have to adjust the volume. Even our own Channel 27 is very very low and I have to put my tv and box on full to get a decent sound from it. So please put all the pirate boxes you have and put them all on the same volume.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes, and when you turn it up enough to hear, the tv buzzes!

I hope Weststar reads these comments. Their service is pathetic.

The channels are ALWAYS jumpy and always at a crucial point in the program . Tech comes and does something to fix it. It continues to jump. Get a new box. Still jumpy. HELLO!! It’s the satelite feed that you are stealing!! And you think I want to pay more to go HD!!?? Right.

And now you’re going to change the channels. After this long, we KNOW where they are!!
      LEAVE THEM BE! Please!

  15. Frank says:

I just think its funny how they pirate the TV stations and then sell it to the public and whats even funnier is that government allows it!

Perhaps a more accurate "grid’ could be provided to the Compass by Weststar so that we viewers might better understand what is on and when. For instance, this grid still has Channel 3 (PBS) showing programmes carried by the Detroit channel, whereas WestStar switched to New York a long time ago. Channel 16 has changed  from TMC to something else, also Channel 34 no longer has Showtime, yet the old programmes are still shown on the grid. There are numerous other examples, too many to mention. I realise that better information is on WestStar’s website, but not everybody has the use of a computer.

Try pressing the little button on your remote control that says "Guide" and let me know what happens

  17. Anonymous says:

When is Showtime coming back???? Also, could the TV guide (posted ont the Compass website) be update to show the right channels after they have been reshuffled. Some of the channels that have previously been moved around still show up under some old channel numbers etc.

Get rid of the Seventh Day Adventist channel. I have no interest in it whatsoever and do not want it at all. The fact that I have to pay for it just grieves me even more.

Use it for a family network, DIY -anything!- else

    • Anonymous says:

Not because it is of no interest to you means that Weststar should do away with it, it caters to other people, I am certain you don’t view every single channel that is offered, skip over it like the rest of us do.

    • Anonymous says:

Just because you don’t have no interest in it doesn’t mean others don’t. I myself have found some of the programs on that channel to be very informative and educational. There are many other channels in the line up, which show nothing of use or interest. But what channels would be left if they got rid of all the channels each person didn’t like.

So if you don’t like it just skip over it the same way every other individual has to do, to other channels which we don’t care to watch.

  19. NHB says:

They should work on make the free to air channels viewable to the none paying public and not just to the cable subscribers, as most people can’t view them, there signal is so lousy it is just snow on 24 and 27 while the 21 and 30 channels are decently viewable.

    • Anonymous says:

Maybe they could add the Literacy Channel to their lineup also.

    • Anonymous says:

I absolutely agree with you.  I live in George Town about 1 mile from their antennas and I experience the same LOUSY picture from Channel 24 & 27, whenever I choose to tune into their broadcast. Frankly I believe this is done to force people to purchase their mediocre cable service.  I have family that subscribe to cable and the service is ‘left to be desired’.

I will stick with my HD satellite TV.
