Parliamentary speakers to talk shop in Cayman

| 31/03/2011

(CNS): Speakers and presiding officers from members of commonwealth countries in the region will be visiting Cayman next week for the 15th Biennial Speakers/Presiding Officers and Clerks Conference. The Conference is a ‘talking shop’ for speakers and other parliamentary officials giving them chance to discuss the issues that affect their individual parliaments and to share solutions and general information. This year’s event is being hosted by the Cayman Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. The public is invited to the opening ceremony at the Legislative Assembly Building on Monday.

Mary J Lawrence president of the executive committee of the Cayman Islands branch of the CPA and the country’s own speaker said it was a “distinct honour” to host the conference and said the discussions would be on a wide range of topics related to the continued development of the important roles of speakers/presiding officers and clerks within the regional parliaments.

The ceremony starts at 9am and the conference lasts two days.

I hope they don’t get their fancy wigs in a tangle.

Being English I know that looking a UK Paliamentary session looks terrible sometimes but remember there are about 600 people there and we have been doing it on a ‘World’ stage for hundreds of years so a bit of slack now and again is nice.

Did anyone look at a picture posted within CNS in the last week or so showing Mac and and others slouching and lounging and joking about in the House – disgraceful!  The man can’t even sit up straight ! And you want to be taken seriously on a world stage!!

Will that reporter from the Compass be allowed to attend the opening?

Perhaps Speaker Lawrence can use this event to expand on her theory that reporting on parliamentary proceedings is a privilege which she can curtail at her whim. Or perhaps one of the other delegates can explain to her what “democracy” and “accountability” actually mean.

Please do not let the other delegates know that our Speaker is a 5 times failure at the polls, & that being a supporter of the premier has it’s perks & advantages (like becoming Speaker). I also hope that the other delegates can give our Speaker a few tips on how to control a dictator during debates in the House!
They must inform her that it is she that run things in the House, not a dictator!
