Speeding driver injured in early morning crash
(CNS): A 20-year-old man was injured in a single-car accident around midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning near Cayman National Bank on Elgin Avenue in George Town. Police say the male driver lost control of the motor car while travelling east along Elgin Avenue at a high rate of speed and it is suspected that alcohol also played a role in the accident. The driver sustained serious injuries and is being treated at the George Town Hospital. However, the sole passenger received no serious injuries. The matter is under investigation be the RCIPS. Dear CNS:
I have withheld with some apprehension posting these short comments; however I must now do it. Up to this point, I truly respected and valued your service however I am not sure that I can do that after today. When you allow persons to make disparaging remarks about someone who is possibly going to be paralyzed for the rest of his life- the lack of repsect shown to the young man is totally unacceptable. I am NOT condoning speed, drinking and driving or any other form of neglect of laws and neither am I condoning this young mans speeding that night; all I am saying is that as a supposedly worthwhile news service- to allow the remarks to be said is despicable. To those of you who have made the comments- I trust that you will NEVER have to deal with this ever in your life. Remember, Karma is a bitch but I trust that you will only have good Karma. CNS- I expected better from you!! I am now considering blocking your site at my place of work and I will most definately do so at my house. I trust that you can redeem yourself. In the future- have compassion for life, for the injured person, for the family!
We are so looking forward to our Pirates Week trip again this year. I am not looking forward to having the stress of driving my rental car with a young person riding 6 inches from my bumper again!!! Where the heck are you in such a hurry to go on a 20 x 7 mile island! If you see a terrified blond in a neon blue Andys rental car PLEASE cut me some slack! I'm freaked out enough being on the wrong side of the road and clearing the round abouts. YIKES!
When will these young drivers learn that speed increases your chances of getting in a serious accident? Where are the parents in these situations? Guardians should talk to their kids about responsible driving before it's too late.
He was driving too fast, but wasn't drunk.
The car flipped when it clipped the curb protruding into the roadway at the new Government Building parking lot exit. It is deceptively hard to see until you are on top of it, even at normal speeds. There are several instances about the island where curbs are built perpendicular to the flow of traffic. Drift onto the painted line on the left of the lane and you will hit them. They all are accidents waiting to happen.
I thank God my son survived unscathed and my fervent prayers are for the recovery of the driver, a good kid, who did a foolish thing and is now paying dearly for it.
I am happy to hear that your child is ok, and i hope that the driver will recover fully too.
I am not sure about the curb at the GAB exit coz i have not seen it recently, but i agree with your statement that some curbs are too far out. One example is at the new Scotiabank bldg by Grand Harbour. When coming from South Sound, the concrete islands separating entry from exit pushes out way too much and actually blocks the cycling lane and forces cyclists into the driving lane and potential danger.
The NRA buffs need to correct this before a serious accidents occurs to a cyclist there. If the length of the concrete islands are reduced, they can still serve the purpose of separating entry from exit without breaking the cycling lane and forcing cyclists into harms way.
Again, i hope the boys make a full recovery and have truly learned their lesson about speeding. Just think if someone was driving, walking or riding in that area at the time and was hit by the out-of-control vehicle – these boys would then have two hells to pay.
What cycle lanes?
As a rule of thumb I tend to find that cars driving at speeds safe for other road users generally do not suffer that sort of damage clipping curbs. People who are hurt by their own selfishness get no sympathy from me.
Yes he was driving to fast, but don't we all do things at some point of our life and regret? He wasn't drunk, he is only 20 years old. The end results could have been different, we all know that, but they weren't. The two individuals are good kids, not gang members, not criminals. You ask where the police were? The car in question drove by a police car who then turned around when she heard the accident.
My prayers and thoughts are with the family and the driver, and hope for a full recovery.
Thank God he only hurt his own stupid irresponsible self and not someone else as is usuallly the case in such instances….drinking, driving and speeding….there are no happy endings.
If you can call some stupid at least have the balls to post your name.
First of all i would like to let you know that he was not DRINKING!
And second of all i would like to know how you can call someone who you do not know "stupid and irrisponisble"
And i hope to God that you do not have children and if you do and your children are ever hurt they are just being "stupid and irrisponsible"
When i heard about the accident i felt sorry for a little bit but then i said the same thing. Look if you are out there speeding and you get hurt because of it then you are "stupid and irresponsible"
Stupid because guess what… you know better! so to do something that is wrong is called what…
Irresponsible because guess what… you have passengers in the car or people walking the street that could have been killed for what.
had he been driving normally and been a more experience driver this situation could have been better but this is not the case and people shouldn't lose sight of the fact that he was speeding which is a traffic offense less than 1/4 from the police station… in front of our national government building??
Come on, remove personal feelings and you will see that this kid has no respect…
i went cross the hospital and i saw all his family members there and i thought to myself watch how many people love him and he played with his life so freely without regard for others.
It is a shame that it had to happen but this is life and life is about learning and if you can't learn then you get hurt. What is EVEN worse is that he won't be the last to go through this.
So yeah i feel bad but what can ya do what is crying going to solve? there was another little guy several years go who killed his girlfriend and an immigrant working (i think) and paralyzed himself in the process so the two of them can become friends now…
You know it's funny that you can call him stupid and irresponsible… with no care in the world.. i would love to hear what you would have to say if this was your own flesh and blood… have a damn heart and dont be so cold!
Praying he will recover completely and heal with no long term effects. It is a shame, hard lesson to learn for such a young kid.
I’m amazed at these comments, this young driver is in serious condition… He may never walk again! Where is your compassion!
I would like to see how much compassion you would feel for this guy IF he had hit YOU or one of YOUR family members whilst driving like a maniac, drunk or not drunk!
Please remember that this child has a family. He is in serious condition and may not walk again. Please have some consideration when posting your inconsiderate remarks.
We should all be wishing this young man a speedy recovery from the incident
If alcohol is involved, then take away their licence for a period of time equivalent to their age.
Yet another young maniac driver…
While I wish this young man no ill, I am finding it increasingly difficult to summon sympathy for these kids . Usually driving at the dead of night, usually at high speed, usually under the influence and usually involving no other vehicles. To me that screams poor judgement, minimal driving skills and irresponsible behaviour.
Where is the police enforcing the traffic laws and regulations????
I NEVER see them anywhere? This morning on the way of taking my kids to school, one moron in a govenment pick-up truck was speeding like a maniac, decided to switch from the right lane to the left, and to exit towards South Sound (by the Hurley's roundabout) must have changed his mind, run the truck up on the little piece of sidewalk there, almost flipped it, but landed on all 4 wheels, then continued on speeding like he didn't miss abeat. Of course he was on the phone all the time.
Thos are not isolated occurences! This happens daily, and I NEVER see police out there anywhere. Where is the RCIP's traffic dept??????
They come out for Purple Ribbon weeks around Christmas and New Years. It's really hard to say where they are the rest of the time. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in ticketing revenue we don't need?
oh, RIGHT…guess you guys missed the Memo…CoP David Baines DISBANDED the Traffic Department and put all the traffic officers on regular uniform shifts…..seems that extra $4 Million dollars just didn't cover the costs…
Let's hope the driver recovers but you do reap what you sow if it is alcohol related. I have driven in many countries around the world and I find the drivers in Cayman most bizarre! They are so courteous and polite in allowing other cars to filter in ahead of them but so dangerous as (just one example) they text on their mobile whilst negotiating roundabouts and swerving from lane to lane oblivious of the havoc they cause around them. On this island I drive defensively, assuming (correctly on many occasions) that the car ahead will not indicate before turning, be in the wrong lane for suddenly turning on roundabouts, stop suddenly for no reason, swerve from lane to lane whilst on the mobile etc etc. It has kept me free of accidents so far but I know it's only a matter of time! If only the courtesy that most drivers show could be translated into safe driving (stay off the mobile & don't drink/drug and drive!), there would be far fewer accidents.
It has gotten much worse in the last couple of years. You come to a stop at a 3-way and just as you pull out someone races through the stop sign to your left. You courteously wait at a stop sign for a driver yacking on a cell phone coming from your right only to have her/him cut hard to turn w/ no signal. "Any cars comin'? I'll just pull half way into the street then stop and look." "Oooh, I'll be nice and let this guy pull out of the credit union to make a right turn across my lane and the one on my right,,,I'm too stupid to care that it causes a horrible accident." "Pay attention to what I'm doing on the road? I don't have to. I have a huge SUV so me and my kids are safe when we hit you in your small car or bicycle while I chat on my blackberry and watch t.v. Besides, you probably don't go to the right church,,,or any church at all, you peeping tom, satanist!"
