Schools invited to go Yellow2Green for cash prize
(CNS): Starting next week, local primary schools will begin competing to see which of them can collect the most old Cayman Islands Yellow Pages directories as part of the second annual telephone directory recycling programme,“Yellow2Green”. The main goal of the three week initiative, which kicks-off Tuesday 15 November, is to keep old phone books out of the landfill, but primary students can win cash prizes for their school while they are helping the environment. CIYP is also offering a prize to the member of the community who comes closest to guessing the total number of directories collected for recycling. The school with the most directories per student will be awarded a cash prize of $1,500, with $1,000 going to the second place school and $700 for third place.
There will also be other prizes like a Subway Party for the class that collects the most and a gift certificate from Books & Books to the student that bring in the most outdated phone books.
“We were very pleased with the student’s dedication during last year’s competition and hope they will continue to give us a helping hand this year,” said Eileen Keens, Market Manager for Global Directories, publishers of the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages.
Members of the community are invited to get rid of their old directories without adding to Mount Trashmore (as the George Town dump is known) by disposing of them in containers that will be located in high traffic areas, such as all major supermarkets and Camana Bay.
Once the programme comes to an end on 3 December, the directories will be sent to GreenFiber, the largest manufacturer of GreenFiber insulation in the United States, and the end result will be converted into home insulation in aid of energy efficiency.
Last year over 37,000 old phone books were collected, but CIYP is challenging residents and schools to gather even more, and there will be a prize for the person who comes closest to guessing the total for this year. Anyone who wants to have a go must log on to www.facebook.com/CaymanIslandsYellowPages to take part in the competition.
For the second year in a row, the following businesses have provided their support to this green programme: BB&P, Camana Bay, The Chamber of Commerce, Foster’s Food Fair, GreenFiber USA, Hurley’s Supermarket, Kirk’s Supermarket, LIME, Lemmies Trucking, NCI Services, Thompson Tropical Shipping and Vision Marketing. New sponsors are Books & Books, Subway and WestStarTV .
“We really appreciate the support from all our partners. Their participation has allowed us to put together a full programme and we’re grateful to be part of a community united by our commitment to environmental responsibility,” added Keens.
