Suspect escapes police after hospital treatment

| 18/11/2011

Charlton EBANKS.jpg(CNS): Update Friday 11:55am — The RCIPS has now released the name and photo of the man who escaped from police custody yesterday morning. Charlton Bengar Ebanks (left), aged 21, escaped from his police guard at the Cayman Islands Hospital shortly after 7:00am on Thursday, 17 November. Ebanks, who is described as being 5’ 11’ in height with brown eyes, dark complexion, black hair and of slim build, is not believed to be a danger to the public. However, anyone who sees this man or knows of his present whereabouts is urged to contact their nearest police station. Ebanks was under arrest in relation to the road traffic incident and in connection with an outstanding warrant.

He was injured during a single vehicle road crash in West Bay on Wednesday afternoon and had been detained for treatment overnight at the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town.

An RCIPS spokesperson confirmed Thursday afternoon that an investigation had been opened into all of the circumstances surrounding the incident, which had triggered concerns in the community as to the identity of the escapee.

Funny hearing all these posts saying what a good guy he is, and his picture should have never been released.  He escaped from police costudy so he probably had something to hide.  Now it turns out he is wanted in connection with a string of bugleries.  Would you like some cranberry sauce to go with that foot in your mouth.

hope una neva find him xD !

Are some people missing the fact that he escaped while in custody?!  Of course his name and photo should be used.  He did something illegal!  It's sickening to hear the amount excuses we have for bad behaviour here.

  4. Anonymous says:

From what I read, this guy hasn't done anything wrong.

Ok, maybe he was guilty in the car crash.

And don't forget that in this country there will be a warrant out for your arrest if you don't pay a 50$ traffic ticket.

Placing his picture on the internet is therefor an overkill.

Did you forget that an outstanding warrent could be anything including manslaughter?  But for some on island that would be "this guy hasn't done anything wrong". Placing his picture on the internet so he can be caught must have hit a personal nerve for you.  Bummer.

And no one will lose their job although it was their responsibility to guard this man

Let us hope that this little episode is worth a few more years in the slammer – the less scum on the streets the better.

The point is surely that the man was under arrest….rightly or wrongly. Probably shouldn't have been nicked but hey, he was. Deal with it… don't abscond and make it worse.

It was only a few days ago the good posters on this site were calling for harsher sentances allround and looking to lock up for life some kids in the Brac caught playing with a spring loaded BB gun…………..

    • Seriously???? says:

“Probably shouldn’t have been nicked but hey…”

Seriously? Cayman gets better when people wanted by the police aren’t caught? Let me guess: you spend your Thursday nights wearing a mask and carrying a gun, right?

Am sorry…this is aweful and absolutely poor judgement by the police.  Release a photo of a young CAYMANIAN wanted for a traffic accident that totalled his car and caused injuries to himself and escaping custody at the hospital.  He is believe to not be a harm to the community yet he is now branded and protrayed with this mug-shot like a huge criminal with violent intentions and violent record!

This is why our young men find it increasingly hard to get ahead.  Now who is going to hire him?  When the truth about him is: he has some issues but is not, as far as I am aware, and I know him, a violent thinking or acting young man.  His parents are both hard working, honest citizens of our country (both Cayman Born and bred).

Yeah but when that XXX man from Jamaica escaped from custody at the GT lock-up…no pics were released of him?!!  All yet we nah find him.

I am not suggesting, given the serious situation we dealing with in regards to the thugs, hoodlums, gangsta-want-to-be, rapists, murderers, gun totting idots, of late should not make us more serious in our operations and approach to dealing with these matters!  But for the good Lord sake, it surely does not mean we throw discretion, good judgement and decency to the curb.  That makes the RCIPS in my view just as bad.

Am not sure I have the answers, am not the police.  And perhaps they have more info than I do, but from my vantage point this is simply wrong!!

I could not care who disagree

    • Anonymous says:

I agree its awful. I cant figure out why he would run and make his situation worse. Was he looking at a lot of time in jail for a traffic offense. This whole thing makes no sense.

    • Anonymous says:

He is wanted by the police. Who cares what his race is? If he didn't want his picture on the internet/media…he should have obeyed the law. Nuff said!

Tired of reading the poor me, my poor race blah, blah, blah.

Do the right thing and there would be no worries.

    • Ya Make Yer Choices . . . says:

If he had not illegally escaped from custody then there would have been no mug shots.  So he has not one to blame but himself.  But you are right he is not going to be on the Word.doc at my office "People we will never give a job to"

    • Anonymous says:

Sounds like the vantage point of a friend/family of criminals or maybe a criminal yourself? We understand.  But for us "not" criminally minded he still needs to take responsibility for all of his actions.  And I understand why you don't care.

      • Thankful Again says:

And you're an idiot how's that?

I never suggestd that he should not be held responsible for his actions.  I was suggesting that the RCIPS should be as well.  Releasing his photo to be vindictive/"get-even" as a way of spiting him for deciding to WALK out of the hospital on their watch is a dispicable for an organization charged with keeping law and order and enforcing the law.  It's low and they know it.  It's a "get even" thing for causing such public uproar for their carelessness.  Plain and simple.

Its my view, that in doing this, tey have further tarnished and ruined this young man's chances of progressing in this very unforgiving society we have here.  So the next time our young men start destroying one another and God forbid hit you or an innocent target by their outbursts of anger, I hope you remember your words.

And "not" criminal minded….my backside.  You have just as much halo wings as does the RCIPS in this instance.

Just because someone is opposite the majority does not mean they are wrong or criminally minded as you suggested.  But I already said, I could not give two hoots who disagrees with my view.

    • Reality Calling says:

Let me explain it to you: this CAYMANIAN is a criminal. He was in lawful police custody and he escaped. Now this CAYMANIAN is a fugitive. If he was concerned about “getting ahead”, this CAYMANIAN would not be a criminal or fugitive in the first place. His bad choices led him to a life of crime (which clearly he’s in the middle of) and he gets his face on the internet for that.

The police are changing how they handle naming criminals and trying to catch them, and thank Christ for that. It’s about flipping time.

PS – I don’t care if you “could not care who disagree”. I also don’t care who his parents are (though their shame should be great). I’m sorry for them, but where they are from doesn’t change that their son the CAYMANIAN is a criminal.

      • Anonymous says:

And where did you ascertain that he is a criminal? Is it rhe colour of his skin? There is a difference between a misdemeanor or traffic offence versus a criminal offense. And what in this story told you he was clearly in a life of crime. Was it that he is caymanian, black or an Ebanks. You sound like a police. So I done.

        • Reality Calling says:

You are a disgrace to brown people, Caymanians and people named Ebanks.

He’s a criminal because it’s a CRIME to escape from lawful custody once he was arrested. I don’t give a toss why he was arrested, as long as it was lawfully for an arrestable offence, because once he escaped custody he BECAME A CRIMINAL, and for so long as he is on the run he’s in the middle of an on-going crime. And yes, I would call a criminal who is spending his days trying to evade capture by the police “leading a life of crime”. He sure isn’t leading the life of a law-abiding citizen.

Here’s the big part: For you to suggest “Oh, he’s brown so you must be a racist, and woe is me and all others of colour to be around a big bad racist…” is just garbage and you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to make a fake race issue out of his real crime. The criminal deserves the shame and not I, and you disgrace brown people, Caymanians and people named Ebanks with your false cry of racism and the equivalent against Caymanians or Ebanks. That said, I didn’t expect better from someone who closes “So I done”.

It takes an especially weak person to need to hide behind “I’m brown and when I screw up I’m going to call everyone who calls me on it a racist to help me get away with it”. Weak weak weak. I’m glad not everyone is as weak as you.

I guess another Police Officer sleeping or texting or doing something besides "guarding" his charge and I am sure he or she will not be reprimanded let alone removed from the force.  Incompetence is not acceptable on the Police Force, Caymanian or not.  We deserve better.

George Town Police has really gone down hill, it appears that there is no leadership.

      • Anonymous says:

Leadership?  You mean the leadership told him to let him get away?  That makes no sense.  This is the fault of whoever was watching him and I doubt it was leadership.

  14. Dr. SaySo says:

What did he do other than get in a car accident? He is wanted for other things, but yet he is harmless. Why did he escape ? Maybe he is afraid of hospitals.

On the other hand, how could he escape so easily. I am sure right now many of the prisoners at Northward are getting sick so they can make a trip to the hospital. Watch out for this RCIP!

  15. Anonymous says:

I wonder how he thinks this is going to improve his situation. It's a good thing most of the criminals are morons.

Please fire who ever is responsible for his escape. People need to be taught to take their jobs seriously or they going have to do without a salary!

Gossip seems to rule fact on the marl road in the Cayman Islands.

Its funny how a misunderstanding can get the community all worked up. The young man's warrant  was for unpaid court fines, oweing the government no more than a weeks worth of lunch money.

Yes, he should have just went to court and paid his fees but as you can see the RCIPS would rather hunt down this type of citizen more aggressively  in comparison to the rapists and murderers in our community only to live up to their motto of "We care, We Listen and We Act". Basically, picking up the puppies and not paying attention to rabit dogs which run loose amongst us. This young man is obviously of no harm to anyone.

"Publicise his identity" someone said. Oh my good Lord, you might as well publicise every traffic offender really, and I'm sure that your name or picture would probably appear. My point is, its not that serious as he is not a threat to anyone apart from his reckless driving which caused his accident. As for the ignorant comment which states "Cayman's police just don't get the fact that some of their policies and procedusres are only assisting and aiding the criminals in Cayman", actually I believe I made my point in line three of this paragragh.

And while I'm posting my dear opinion let me say that I agree with the following comment "Baines should fire some one for this, local or expat; too many bad decisions being made at the command level." This person seems to be seeing the picture.

    God Bless.

maybe just maybe if you told us who had escaped we might know who to look out for? dohhh.

    • Anonymouse1 says:

The local police seem to never know who they have as suspects or what they look like even if they had them in their charge, so how would you expect for them to tell you who to look out for. they don't know.

Publicise his identity….you will have him back in custody within a few hours.

What is the matter with Cayman's police…this person is an escaped suspect and fugitive.

What is the point of keeping his identity a secret from the public ?

Cayman's police just don't get the fact that some of their policies and procedusres are only assisting and aiding the criminals in Cayman.
