Killa triumphs in important Miami fight

| 19/11/2011

Killa.jpg(CNS): Cayman’s boxing champ, Charles ‘Killa’ Whittaker, has won himself a shot at a world title after winning and important elimination fight in Miami last night. Whittaker beat Miami’s Giorbis Barthelemy in a unanimous decision after twelve rounds. 37-year-old Whittaker won on two of the judges’ scorecards, 117-111 and 116-112 in the IBF junior-middleweight fight which took place at the Miami Airport Convention Centre on Friday, 18 November. This is Killa’s 14 consecutive win and now puts him in a position to fight for a world middle weight title. (Photo by Kelly Robyn Photography, courtesy of local boxing blog lightninglewison.com)

Speaking ahead of the fight with the Miami Herald, Whittaker said he had had worked a long and hard time for the opportunity. “I like Giorbis Barthelemy; he’s a friend. But I am not going to let him piggy-back off of me. I am going to win because I know where this fight can lead me,” he said

    God help us people!!

    The way some Caymanians talk they seeem to hate the expats for whatever reason. You would think then, when their own people work hard and achieve their dreams, they would be happy. From reading some of the postings on CNS they hate them too – I do not get it! Go Charles!! Go!!

  2. Expat Eddie says:

    What the hell is wrong with some of you people? Is it so hard to understand that the Caymanian people want and need their own heroes? Regardless of how you may rate Charles' abilities as a world class fighter, a simple "congrats Charles" would suffice….and just leave it at that.

    Charles, my best wishes to you. Continue being a role model for young Caymanian men. Lord knows, they need it now more than ever.

    Now we know where the Premier was on Nov. 18th… I wonder who payed for his trip, and if it came out of the Govt. coffers? and if it did, take me along with you next time… I'm so broke in my own country I can't even afford to go down the street, much less to a no name boxing match in Miami.

    And yes, I am a Caymanian, an extremely pissed off with the bullcrap Caymanian, at that.

    This outcome is simply more evidence of the champion you are Mr. Whittaker!  I look forward to watching you become the World Champion soon.

      Let us be honest here folks, if Charlie was really any good he would not still be relying on government to be paying his bills. As a professional he should be earning his living like any other professional fighter does. Charlie's only income really is from government & that is why he so desperately supports & defends the UDP (never bite the hand that feeds you), but if Charlie was to try & earn a living from boxing as a professional he would starve to death, & that is the GOD's honest truth from the evidence that I see. Charlie will never earn a living from fighting boxers that no one in the boxing world has ever heard about. He has been fighting for years & still cannot make a living from his fights as a professional, except for the money that we (government) give away to him. He is supposed to be a professional boxer, let him earn his keep.

    I must say that I only read CNS now once a week to get a clue on what's going on. I must say that I am ashame at many hate mongrels Anonymouses that live in this country. If something really good was to happen some Anonymous BOBO would find something negative to say. I still remember the wise words of Sister Hope Borden- Glidden our Sunday School teacher for many years: " If you believe in something let it be known that it's you that said it and if you have nothing nice to say about someone keep it to yourself". No wonder that we are such in a sad situation in our beautiful Islands. We seem to have inherited a lot of haters that are probably not welcome anywhere else and what is sad is that many are our own. What ever happened to Love one Another and look out for each other because at the end of the day it's starting to look like a yearly Pirates Week and we know how the story ends. Michel Lemay

    You people really amazes me.  Why are you so jealous? Jealous of Mac, Ms. Lassie, the punch that Elio got, Ms. Cayman and now the Killa? What's wrong?  A lesson for the day, if you cannot say anything good, please do not say anything.

  9. Woody DaCosta says:

    Charles, I am extremely proud of your accomplishments. Your never give-up attitude is a characteristic that many should embrace and try to foster and inculcate in the next generation. Your struggles through this chapter of your life are clear and glaring examples that no one is truly entitled to anything.  Therefore if you want something, go out and fight your heart out for it!

    Without resources, without a true support base, coupled with a rather naive understanding of what to expect, you left Grand Cayman practically with only the sheer drive to make your dream of being a World Boxing Champion, a reality. To that end you should be applauded! Very few people ever truly persistently labour to make their dream become their reality. Many, if honest with themselves, having to look back in retrospect may find themselves saying “if only…”

    I close my support of your hard fought battles with a poem by Rudyard Kipling my dear late parents would consistently recite to us, but before that, a quotation from the late great Martin Luther King Jr.  “In the end, we will remember not the words of your enemies, but the silence of our friends”.  To that end, I will not be guilty.

    IF” by Rudyard Kipling.

    IF you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    ' Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
    if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And – which is more – you'll be a Man, my son!

      'without resources' seriously? please…how long has Charles been on the government pay roll? it may be good political strategy for a wannabee politician to sing the Killa's virtues but at least keep some connection to reality.

      • Anonymous says:

        To the Anonymous author of this ridiculous, unwarranted and groundless response. If you had allowed common sense to govern your tirade and not envy and hate you would have gathered from the very first sentence of paragraph two that Mr. DaCosta was referring to when Charles first left Cayman some 18 years ago. Not in recent years stupid!

        Oh well, I guess numb skulls like you is why we now have such a successful island today with every Caymanian who wants to work fully employed, every Caymanian businessman totally succesful, every Caymanian child educated to the highest standard and most importantly sound political representation ensuring the aforementioned.

  10. Ken P says:

    Keep it Charles and hope you get the chance to be world champion as you've worked hard and have had a tough childhood yet boxing and the late DD helped you to become a fighter in the ring and a good person.

  11. JEB says:

    A Big Congrats to Charles "KILLA" Whittaker from your OLD BUSH FANS we are so proud of you.

    All the best for the future and continue to lean on GOD.

    Charles is like Ms Lassie: "massively talented" in the eyes of certain Caymanians wanting to believe that they have world class talent/"heritage" in our little community but in reality not featuring in any way as genuine practitioners/ artists of their craft in the real world.

    • Anonymous says:

      nonsense….. his world ranking speaks for itself……. and i'm a expat!

    • Outside da Box says:

      My guess is that Killa could paint as well as Miss Lassie even with his boxing gloves on.  At least Mr. Whittaker is good at one thing.

    • Anonymous says:

      I swear, CNS is populated by mainly pessimistic XXXX. He's got a one step shot at number ONE. I'm no friend or admirer of Whittaker, nor am I some supernationalist as many Caymanians will say someone like myself cannot be one of their own, but you tell me when any of you pricks that like to bash on Caymanians that have accomplished anything of the sort in any area of life.

      Cayman is small, the population of Caymanians fewer with very few possibilities for them. To go on to accomplish things on a global scale is to be admired unlike people, such as yourself, who seem to want something to fuss about all the time.

    • Play Nice says:

      I'm not a big fan of Ms Lassie's work, but then again I hate Picasso as well so it's all a matter of taste. You like what you like. That said, you are an XXXX for picking on the people who are presumably hosting you. Further, if you want to put down "Killa", why not do it on his turf and go a couple rounds with him. I bet you'll stop flapping your yap soon enough in the ring. XXXX… (am I allowed to say that?)

      • Play Nice says:

        I guess not… I still say they are an xxxxxxx and a xxxxxx though. You know what I mean.

      • Pit Bull says:

        The poster was making a valid point about a perceived desperation amongst certain (and by no means all) Caymanians to elevate certain things beyond their true importance in order to equate local achievement with international standards.  Miss Lassie's "art" a fairly good example of this.  Just because the poster was perhaps one of the many temporary residents of this territory who are needed to keep Cayman from turning into another drug and violence ridden Caribbean war zone does not mean they are not entitled to express a few home truths.

  19. Anonymous says:

    I'm not a boxing expert so have no idea if Killa has real talent or not but isn't this just another in a long list of his 'vacant' or insignificant title challenges that's being hyped up?

    I was at the bout held in the Lions' Centre a few years ago and it was joke.

    My understanding is that this title bid is being funded in part by CIG and I wonder why?

    • Anonymous says:

      congrats Killa on beating another "no name" old man fighter. You would get some respect if you would stop picking your fighters (old, washed up, no name men off the street). Yes, you are a legend in your own mind & amongst Cayman's boxers, but until you fight a real boxer you will forever remain a nobody in the boxing world. Now go fight a real fighter please!

  20. Anonymous says:

    Who really follows boxing anymore anyway? You know you're in trouble when your heavyweight champion is some Eastern European guy with a fragile chin.  As for Whittaker, yeah, good for him, but put him up against some real competition and he'd get smoked.

  21. Anonymous says:

    Congratulations, hope you get the big one, 1

  22. Anonymous says:

    You go boy Killa – you are one of Cayman's treasures and you have my full support. Still say you need to follow the footsteps of Mr. Dalmain and put your sights on the political arena.

  23. Anonymous says:

    A 37 year old defeats a 39 year old and this gets us excited? These guys are in the geriatric league as far as boxing is concerned. If Charles were matched against one of these world class fighters in their twenties, he would be massacred.

      ever hear of someone called bernard hopkins??????

      • Anonymous says:

        Don't compare Bernanrd Hopkins who could actually be a boxing legend to no name Charles Whittaker……… at least Bernard has fought and won "notable" fights and he would surely kick Charlie's rump!!

    Congratulations Charles.  Keep up the good work.
