Legislators return for last sitting of the year

| 14/12/2011

la gov bench.JPG(CNS): Members of the Legislative Assembly return to the parliament today (Wednesday 14 December) for what is expected to be a three day sitting and the last meeting for this year. Amendments to the liquor licensing law and the firearms law are two of the bills legislators are expected to debate. The government’s Financial Framework Agreement, which was postponed from the previous sitting, was also scheduled to be debated by the members but that may now be pushed into the New Year. The premier signed the document last month and is reportedly now in effect but has not been passed by the country’s elected members.

The results of the national census are also expected to be debated during the three day sitting, as well as a number of other matters.

There are also a number of private members motions tabled by the independent member Ezzard Miller that have not yet been debated. So far, his efforts to submit motions to amend the election law in order to create single member constituencies and one man, one vote have failed to find favour with the speaker, who is thwarting Miller’s campaign to force government into adopting a fairer and more democratic polling system for the 2013 election.

The Legislative Assembly is scheduled to start at 10am and it is open to the public. However all electronic equipment remains banned.

It amazes me how much time is wasted in the House at most of these infrequent sittings. How many times do they sit during the year?3-4 times maybe? Its time they ALL started to earn their money by sitting 4-8 times a year so that they can REALLYearn their salaries. They might even get some work done as well and move laws along instead of wasting so much time arguing amongst themselves.I hear that they also spend time on various committees but from what I have seen and heard even those seldom ever meet.My my what a waste of time ,our time..The threats I hear in the house about suing this one and that one can only be done in the House where they can hide behind Palimentary Privelige I think its called. In other words things that are said about someone in the House cannot be acted upon in public. That is another archaic law that should be changed and I have often wondered why this has remained so for so long.Well as the saying goes "Time is longer than rope"so we shall see what the future might bring.Surely it cant get any worse you think??

More time on the job is that a good thingor is that a bad thing? Many of the laws remain unenforced or ignored anyway. Now that the traffic law has been passed and signed by the Governor I no longer expect to see people talking on their cell phones while driving.

And what has been accomplished this past year ? What I see happening was pure unadulterated bur-bureaucratic harassment! The economy has yet to be turned around. But how can they do anything, anything at a quick pace?

I am happy to see those in the front row sitting still for a few minutes!

Otherwise they would be galavanting around the world blowing all the funds that they forced us to pay in increased taxes.
