Robbers take cash and car

| 07/02/2012

crime-scene-tape.jpg(CNS): Three masked armed men made off with a small amount of money and a white Honda Odyssey motor vehicle during an overnight robbery. A spokesperson for the RCIPS said that officers were called to an address in Palm Dale, George Town at around 00.30 am on Tuesday morning where a 35 year old man and his 32 year girlfriend were robbed by the three masked men at their home. One suspect was armed with a handgun, the second with a machete and the third was carrying a knife. Alongside the undisclosed sum of cash the robbers made off with the car registration 142 696, which was parked outside the victims’ house. No shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident.

Two of the suspects are described as around 5 foot 10 inches in height, slim build with faces covered wearing blue jeans and the third man had a stocky build and he was also wearing blue jeans. Police said all three had their faces covered and spoke with a Jamaican accent

Police noted that the plate number shown above could have been removed since the theft of the vehicle.

Anyone who has any information regarding the robbery, is asked to contact George Town police station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477(TIPS).

Hint to Police- check Immigration records to see if any known (Caymanians or those residing here) criminals have entered the island in the past 2-3 weeks and also check the outgoing flights to see who is leaving! You might just, pardon the pun, strike it rich!!!

The Palm Dale "Hot Spot" and surrounding area s have seen a spate of burglaries and thefts over the past year – many of which have bee unreported to the media, and many of which have been left residents feeling that RCIPS interest and repsonse has been sorely lacking!

Many are large-scale "clean-out" robberies of major appliances etc, and are taking place in daytime, some involve multiple-homes/apartments at the same time. This criminal MO has also spread throughout town – and even to West Bay Road now!

The Compass highlighted some of these in a feature article last year!

Heading down in a couple months on holiday. Not sure whether we should rent a car or would we be safer walking. Both options now seem a bit unsafe.

      Come Brac!

    • Reality Check says:

Better option is to go elsewhere.  Cayman is unsafe, exceptionally expensive and has very limited tourist attractions.

    • NORTHSOUND STINGRAY says:

22:09  Obviously you are a foreign person.  However Stingray says this to you.  Please do not let these little spates of problems stop you from visiting Cayman and enjoying a good holiday.  Come on down, enjoy the sea and sun, the fresh air and meet the Caymanian Natives, that mean you must travel out of the city.  Thanks for visiting Cayman and enjoy yourself.

Rent the car….you need to go all over Cayman and experience each district. Cayman is a beautiful gem of an island. If you are staying on Seven Mile Beach then walk and visit the wonderful restaurants and shops. Caymanians are warm and welcoming and their smiles would light up a dark day. Yes we have crime. Like any place you go to in the world be vigilant and be alert. When I go to the states or Europe I am alert and know my surrondings. I don't ever believe that I could not be a victim of crime but I would never allow crime to stop me from visiting and experiencing this wonderful world. Thank you for chosing the Cayman Islands as your destination and have a wonderful time in our "HOME".

The pity of this is to listen to some of the bloggers write foolishness, because the Public can be of a great help.  There are 60,000 residents and about 500 police.  What the hell all of those people doing you cannot see anything.  Everybody need to check out all the white hondas they see.  Do you really expect the Police to be on every corner>  We do not have that much.

So good neighbors, do your job and look.

Why have RCIPS not released details of the car? Obviously it's going to show up again soon in a bank robbery or something.  The only good explanation would be if they want the robbers to feel safe enough to drive it around so the police can catch them.  Otherwise it is incompetence.

Which story did you read?  Obviously not the one above……. doh…

I was just wondering if there was more information available from the police to keep the wary public informed, in the know and with some sort of confidence in the policing in Cayman:

-Did the men invade the home?  If they did, did they make their way by breaking a window, breaking down the front door etc?  Or did they assault the couple on their way into the house?

-How were the car keys to the car obtained?  Was it in the house and the theives took it off the hallway table?  Or was it demandedfrom the victims?

-Were the victims arriving home at that time, or were they asleep in their bed?  If they were asleep, in what way did they discern that someone was in their home?

-Were the robbers black, white or mixed (by colour of their hands/arms/neck/feet if wearing flip flops as faces were covered)?

-To that point, what were the offenders' faces covered with?  A stocking, ski mask, t shirt etc? Was the hairline visible?  If it was, what colour and type was the hair?

-Did the robbers have any identifying markings – tattoos, scars, walk with a limp?

-Did one seem like ringleader, or were they all acting withoutguidance?

    -Approximately what ages were these perpetrators – teenagers, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's?

I'm not criticizing, just looking for more information.  I know the couple must be traumatized right now, and I send my condolences to them.  It must also be difficult for them to remember the above details after such an incident, but a thorough interrogation could help the investigation and prevent future crimes should enough information be given to obtain a suspect list.

    Thanks.

    An irate Caymanian

11:40 whether you realized it or not but 20 years ago Cayman was a peaceful loving place, with good, water, good food, and good traits.

Since we have been giving people workpermits and statuses we we have slowly been turning third world.  You all dit it to us, and we will never be at peace with any foreigner who has came here and destroyed our island.  So live with what ever is taking place or decide to help make it better.  If you do not do that you will not enjoy a day.

  11. Anonymous says:

Do you have any details on how entry to the apartment/house was gained?  Was this another robbery done when they were getting out of their car or was entry gained to the house?  Was a door/window left open?  or was this a knock on the door followed by a forceful entry?  These sort of details can help the rest of us be more alert to protect ourselves.

I am so sad reading this.  How has this day come that we have to be afraid in our own homes and favorite restaurants?  Unfortunately I do not see how this will stop/slow down.  no one is being caught.

  12. Anonymous2 says:

Here this, if any money place or bank ever get rob by that stolen car, there will be no one else to blame, but the police!  They know a car is stolen, they should all be surveying the financial establishments now!

I would have thought the "Iron Ching Ching" would have been in the air ALL DAY today burning fuel looking for these guys.

Strange how they like to fly all the time yet when they really should be up in the sky they are nowhere to be seen….

  13. Anonymous says:

SERIOUSLY!!  This is completely and totally out of control.  The police/government/SOMEBODY/ANYBODY let's do something to make some changes here!  These would be hooligans can't keep terrorizing us!

    • Anonymous says:

It is time for every household to take turns watching, looking out and observing what is happening around their neighbourhood at nights.  If this is done for a week, someone, just someone could be up for a surprise.  Make it a complete wipe out, then call the police.  Let the undertakers do their job.  We have to be more mindful of what is happening around us.

The majority of the residents are not observant.  We are living in a different era and should always be braced for the sudden surprise/s and have a plan B.  Make note of strangers and vehicles in your area, because sometimes they are casing your house/surroundings.

Dont leave keys where they are accessible to intruders, always have your backup in case of any eventuality.

    • burn notice says:

So long as you keep throwing out good cops that 'disturb' the establishment, you'll keep on sinking further into the mire. It's all on you Cayman.

Why is there no description of the car, licence plates etc.? Evidently the robbers intend to use this car in another job.

Hey Magoo:  White Honda Odyssey, plate #142 696!

The article was subsequently amended to include further details as CNS obtained them.

      • WHITE HONDA says:

11;22 Are you saying that it should have been found??????? Cant you see People have disappeared on this Island without a trace and you talking about one little old white Honda.  What we need to do as citizens is check out every white honda we see.  Check or vacant land and back yards.  May be we will find many things, but the public has to assist the police.

There is a description of the car and the licence plate #! Did you read the whole article?

As I said on an earlier post to a very similar story, ( not long before it turns from a similar story to a daily repetitive story ) permanent road blocks on key roads. Its not that difficult to organise.

Getting dangerous here these days.  Not even safe in your own home. Authorities that won't acknowledge the problem. Police that don't make arrests. Prosecutors that don't secure convictions when they do catch someone. Hoping that crime is the number one issue in the next election but I think the voters here take the "it won't happen to me" view and vote for their own selfish interests.  It's not going to be long now before we see 15ft security walls topped with barbed wire and bars on all the windows like other crime infested slums.

And annon 08: 55  dont forget the high powered defence lawyers, we the victems pay to put these scums, back on the streets.

You dont think for one moment that the authority dont know who these guys are…they know everyone one of them, but cant touch them due to human rights act. this act protects protects the criminals World wide, except for the middle east countries, Asian countries  and most  southern countries which remains  civilised. Why would a people put laws in place to protect someone that is no good to socity, runs around scaring and killing the good people of the world.

This is just disgusting now !!!!! Really ?!?. Instead of investing money into upgraded cars, invest the money into recruiting more officers so that we can have more officers patrolling the road. And when people call 911, it doesn't take them so long to respond to people. !!

  18. Anonymous says:

CNS – how about more details like the car license plate number so we can keep an eye out for it or the color shirts they were wearing?

CNS: We have published all the details given to us by the RCIPS.

    • Anonymous says:

The licence plate number is in the article, can you read?

      • Anonymous says:

You are late to the article. The article was updated to include the licence plate number and some other details.

      • Anonymous says:

Was not there originally.  Thanks for updating CNS.

    • Dred says:

This car would have long been disposed of. To be honest it only served as a way to exit the area and probablty can be found somewhere within a mile or two of the area. They may have used it to rob another location and then return back to where they had their vehicale stashed.

Criminals do not use their vehicle near the scene of a crime. Instead the hide it away in some remote location where they return to to change out vehicle. In one case they were so concerned about leaving prints they burnt the vehicle but most do not.

I'm sorry to say that this is just the begining. It will only be getting worse from here on out. I know there will be those usual folks who will not agree with me and be driven by fear that one day it will get better. Keep dreaming.

Not all the money in the world, if given to the police, will have the desired outcome. There is no sence of addressing the symptoms of these problems. Our leaders, if you can call them that, need to address the root causes of these terrible social issues. Not by throwing money at them or directly at the people, but by formulating policies that address these issues.

But, as usual, due to politrics we will continue to ignore these issues and only focus on what the "foriegn investor" wants. I wonder if the "foreign investor" will be around when it won't even be safe to walk from your car to your front door.

I dare to say, these politicians don't care about what is happening in this country. They are too caught up in getting what they can get for themselves and fighting eachother. In the meantime, this country will not survive.

Always wondered why my parents gave birth to me in America. Never before did I ever think that I would say "THANK YOU".

      Take care of yourselves.
