Domino players robbed
(CNS): Three men playing dominoes outside a home in George Town became the latest victims of armed robbers last night. At around 11:40 the players outside the property in Greenwood Drive were approached by two masked men who demanded cash. The robbers approached the three players on foot wearing dark clothing and armed with what appeared to be handguns. The suspects demanded cash and took money from each of the three men before they fled on foot and firing a shot into the air. Police said that no further descriptions of the robbers has yet been provided but confirmed no one was hurt during the tenth stick-up of 2012.

I recently returned to my own country and after seeing and hearing about the horrible crimes in my own country, I have been thinking of returning to Cayman. I've been keeping up with CNS and have been reading about so much crime in Cayman now. When I was last there, only two years ago, it wasn't like that. Do you mean to say that crime has increased so much in Cayman? I mean, they're robbing even people sitting in their yards playing dominoes? Makes me wonder if I'm not safer to remain where I am, or go elsewhere, as Cayman, which I love, seems to be no better off where crime and safety are concerned. Such a terrible shame.
10th stick up… It's only Feb 14th for Gods sake. I have made plans to vacation with my family on the island, maybe I should just stay in the states with my firearm. One can only hope that these thugs are caught and punshed before no Americans come to your fantastic island to spend money. Catching these guys has to be number one. Let's get a better description, height, skin tone, estimated weight, hair color, eye color, clothes they were wearing, accent. The community needs to pull together with the police and get the job done.

easier said than done my friend,i lived in a country where it was quite easy to get a gun license,but guess what? the criminal are more likely to shoot you without asking questions.i think we would be trodding down a very dangerous path then.what we need to do is to be aware of your surroundings and yes support the RCIPS,we really dont need the wild wild west style here.
Really…c'mon. The US constitution preserving the right to bear arms has clearly done so much to help the US be a violence and gun crime free country. Arming ourselves is not the answer.

They were either:
"armed with what appeared to be handguns and an apparant shot was heard"
or
"armed with real handguns and fired a shot into the air".
Now this is the last straw, people cannot even play a game of dominoes in their yard any more.
But I guess some people would say "Where is the police that they were not watching the game" Oh Boy, what a life.

All this money spent on this great security appartus we have in place? This island and it's leadership are a real joke? Who says crime doesn't pay! for those in the law enforcement and the security field it pay quiet well it appears?

I totally agree with the above. Whether the police like it or not gun crime has taken over and they are completely powerless to stop it. Putting one arrest in the newspaper for recovering a firearm is worthless when on the next page there are 3 stories of daylight robberies. The government have two choices…either start kicking in doors of every known semi gangster and search their homes, searh their cars and apply pressure or give us the right to defend ourselves. If it doesnt happen soon you will end up arresting an innocent person caught with an illegal firearm for the purpose of protecting his family. (Which every human has the right to do). Get your sh*t together. Screw spending your money on the chinese building us a dock and put it into immediate problems in your back yard. All the docks in the world will not bring tourists to a crime sticken country with a high gun crime/murder rate.
Allow Us To Protect Ourselvs! Please!
Just allow us the law abiding people to carry a concealed fire arm and we will protect ourselves if we chose to. No police or government can be every where every time. For those of us who would have chosen to get a gun license, we would at least stand a chance of not getting robbed as the low-life punks would not have any idea of who they may come up against.
Yet, one would probably not carry a fire arm with them when playing Dominoes… I don't think guns for everyone is the solution. The police needs to crack down and clean up. If Cayman Police can't do it – bring it a swat from overseas for a year or rather filter some undercover ones in for a course of several years. The corruption on the island is an open secret and it's disgusting! Can't gamble, can't open clubs past certain hours because of what? Church? but yet – Cayman's youth is growing up in drugs & weapons – they need jobs and a future!
Totally agree. Someone needs to get tough on these lazy little SH*@S – the police certainly arent. Can RCIPS not bring some gun sniffing dogs down and do a house to house search (gardens included) in the places they know are likely to house these lowlifes?
Exactly on point robbers will have to think twice and weight the cost and risk if they knew the public could be armed… some people would sit and argue against allowing 'Law Abiding Citizens' to carry a concealed fire arm but here’s a little fact we are exactly 45 days into the new year in which time there was exactly 12 gun crimes committed which means ~3.75 days we have had a gun crime committed against an Innocent Citizen(s) of this country…
Thankfully no one has been shot but how long do you think it will be before people start trying to fight back because they are tired of being the victim…?
What happens when a victim of gun crimes sees the face of the person robbing them and the robber decides to wipe them out…?

As a society we are afraid to admit that we are not perfect, that we are broken, we are not that little island in the sun anymore where its safe and like cheers everyone knows your name… and for those that continue to bury their heads in the sand well your a$$ is left out for all to see and hopefully when someone comes along to take advantage they decide to be nice enough to lube first…

In a recent interview, RCIPS Superintendent Kurt Walton said there were 1,556 legally held firearms in the Cayman Islands as of 1 April, 2011. There were 922 owners attached to those weapons, he said.

Which would lead to more firearms being carried by criminals, more domestic murders, more accidental deaths by firearms. People tend to overestimate how sensibly they would behave if they had a gun. Cayman is blessed by wonderfully strict gun laws. Once the genie is out of the bottle and Cayman flooded with guns there would be no going back.
