THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO DO.  Do not try to better a gun at any time.

The criminals are already at a heightened state of excitement and the gun can easily go off.  Your life is worth a lot more than your ipod and tv. Be smart please.

The police Need to allow us to carry pepper spray & that would let these bandits think twice to rob people!

      Carry it!

Whether the police is going to arrest me for using it is the least of my worries if I can fend off an attacker. Without defending myself, I may not see another day! If a machete happens to be around when I am attacked, I won't think twice to use it. If it is a baseball bat, so be it!

This would increase criminal gun use and increase the risks of weapon discharge.

Brake act homeoner but the island can brace for more of the same as young Caymanian experience more hardship. I suggest to the powers that be to embrake on a national education programm to equip locals so they, we can take up better jobs and be pulled out of criss situation.

IF these robberies are being committed by young thugs, youngsters who are unemployed. My advice to those youngsters without real parents or who are blind by desperation:-

If you can't find work and make the buck through a decent job, at least get help someplace else or move to another country for more opportunities. It is immoral to use force to get what you want!  Trust me, you will end up hurting yourself in the process of committing a crime. Learn from the Buddhists and loyal practitioners of the peaceful religion. At least they shave their heads and beg along the streets as a discipline of humility. Learn from those who avoid violence. Even the clever business-minded person that can't see any hope of making a profit in the Cayman Islands, he will at least go someplace else where businesses are growing. He would at least make his money in accordance to the law. He is not limited in his thinking. You can also learn from the Caymanian mother who want so much for her children and to have a level of independence from the Cayman Islands Government, the high cost of living, and more opportunity. She would at least apply for a British passport for herself and her children, and move to the
UK to live there. She would take every advantge she can of the Overseas Terrritory Act. You have so many options out there as a young person, why do the immoral thing?!

If you want to rob and play dirty, using deadly force to get what you want, be prepared to received deadly force back. If you are caught up in the drug trade or activities and find it hard to come out of it, break your ties, go someplace else and get rehab, and start your life anew. Saying, "if your right hand offend you, cut it off.. it is better to enter heaven without your right hand than to lose your soul"  (Jesus),  and another saying, "what you sow in life you shall reap" – a karmic law. Parents that can't raise their children aright, educate them from time they are young, will feel the karmic effects of a broken heart when they hear that their son or daughter is found dead, caught up in drugs, or missing. Parents that have no time for their children, when they grow old and need attention, will find their children elsewhere with no time for them!  This is how life operates. If being in a world to yourself is a major detriment to your children and household responsibilities, wake up from that little world of yours and do something practical and show them the attention they need. "Cut off the right hand…" and save your soul!  What happens when a king has forgotten that he has a kingdom?  He can't be a king any longer.

Cayman, our young people are LOST!  They have lost their identity. Either the drug man has accepted them like family, or they are bewildered lost children from broken homes. Not saying that all these robberies are from youngsters. Perhaps from expats here as well, but we have no other choice but to try to "save" as much people as we can. Educate them, give them words of wisdom, love them, show more attention to your neighbor's kids, don't be afraid to be their parent as well. Cayman is getting worse – not better. We can at least hold back the tsunami for a time being.

    Just some food for thought.

      Liberterian

Your words have inspired me today.

I left the Cayman Islands to live in the UK for the sake of my own personal safety, about 3 years ago now, after having first moved here after Hurricanr Ivan, almost 7 years ago now.

Life is not easy here, neither is it anywhere on earth but the truths that you've stated here are universal and eternal.

A huge part of Cayman's problem stems in the mind-control of the poorer, local population by the money-demagogues of Cayman, both local and foreign, who form a coaltion that controls every single thing that happens in Cayman.

This crime situation IS making money for some people, or else more would be done along the lines that you have suggested.

Look at the economic benefits/costs of crime for a minute.

More crime equals more funding for police, prisons, lawyers, counsellors…and more security contracts for CCTV, security guarding etc etc.

Costs of crime equals again, more costs/expenses for jailing/housing prisoners, rising costs of doing business for small business owners who are the main victims, the costs of the disintegration of the family unit, costs of emergency services and medical attention for both victims and criminals…and so on.

Crime is paying off for some people, but not those committing the crime.

As long as those people are profiting, nothing more will be done about the levels of crime in the Cayman Islands; that, in itself, is the biggest crime of all.

If politicians steal, why can't we ?

      • Anonymous says:

Because we are better people than they are.

I lived in Cayman for a while and there was a family of scorpions that lived in some wood behind my condo; THEY were better people than your elected politicians are.
