Mac pulls out of vote debate
(CNS): McKeeva Bush has pulled out of Thursday’s public discussion forum on the topical issue of one man, one vote and will be replaced by Cline Glidden. It is understood that the premier will be in Cuba with the management and board of Cayman Airways on a “retreat” to discuss issues relating to the national flag carrier. The premier was expected to appear at the Harquail Theatre to defend the voting status quo on for the Generation Now roundtable in the face of a concerted campaign for a referendum before the May 2013 election on the issue of single member constituencies.
The trip to Cuba comes on the heels of the premier’s recent travels to Honduras, Panama and Washington and prevents him from taking part in the public forum and defending his decision to maintain multi-member constituencies for the 2013 General Election and to hold the referendum on one man, one vote at the same time.
The premier was to appear alongside the opposition leader Alden McLaughlin and independent member Ezzard Miller, who both support the principle of one man, one vote, and Adrianne Webb, one of the Electoral Boundaries Commission, which noted in its report the problem government would face in connection with George Town and the need to increase seats.
Based on the head count of registered voters and the population growth in Bodden Town, the commission stated in its report that if government was to retain multi-member constituencies, the numbers dictated that two additional seats would be required in the capital and one in Bodden Town. However, it noted this would mean that George Town voters would have six votes and a disproportionate influence on the make-up of the national government.
The obvious inequality that this will create has fuelled the campaign for one man, one vote and has led to the success of the campaign and petition to trigger a people’s referendum on the issue. Miller said Tuesday that the volunteers who are collecting signatures are within a hairs width of securing the 3,800 names of votersneeded to trigger the referendum.
The battle, however, will now be to either persuade the premier to merely implement the new voting method without the need for a national vote or to at least hold the referendum before the May elections as stated on the petition.
UDP back-bencher Cline Glidden will now be defending his boss’s position in the face of dramatically declining support across the country for multi-member constituencies.
Glidden, who is the third elected member for the district of West Bay will, if the voting system is not change before next May, be facing an electorate that for the first time will have less votes than those electors in the capital.

What’s to debate? His position is clear, he does not support it, 30% of the people do not understand it and don’t care to and 60% don’t want it. This is an issue being pushed by a very small group of people.
A better debate would be on reinventing caymans economy, what next.
Let me explain. In a debate you don't just bellow your position from a bully pulpit amid the cheers of blind supporters, you have to answer questions and explain and support your point of view with actual facts and clear reasoning. There is no surprise that Mac went pulled out in those conditions.
Every informal poll conducted to date has shown the overwhelming majority of people to be in favour of one man, one vote. Even though many who do support one man one vote have not signed the petition for fear of victimisation from govt. those who have signed the petition already exceed 30% of the entire electorate and rising. You insult the intelligence of Caymanians by suggesting that they would not know how to cast only one vote rather than 2, 3 or 4.
Your numbers only represent wishful thinking, not reality.

East End, as small as it is, is a great example why 'One Man One Vote' will result in expensive cash overruns and waste — they have 2 civic centres and 2 post offices in a lil district like East End, only because the Gun Bayers see themselves as being separate from East End.

Since Gun Bay is not a single member constituency it doesn't really prove your point at all. Breakers also has its own community centre. Savannah has always had its own primary school and post office. Obviously it has nothing to do with electoral district boundaries but with the fact that they are separate communities.

Bush pulled out of this very important debate to go on a retreat to Cuba for what? He could had retreated right here on the Beach or at Cayman Airways Board Room if he wanted to, but that would not be wasting any of the people's money. Retreat = Full expense paid vacation paid for by the Cayman people Caymanian and resident alike. I have no doubt that no good will come of this retreat since it is not the first or the last. There is no accountability at Government or Cayman Airways for that matter. There is certainly no need for the premier to be there at all. This is why there is a board of directors appointed, to oversee the running of the business and report to the government. Where else would you hear of a premier going on a retreat with a board of directors?
So let me get this straight…..Mac didnt know that he was scheduled to travel for this retreat until today? If he knew of his travel plans earlier why did he commit to debate this national issue only to pull out at the last minute?
Generation Now, the next debate should be on "How to Stimulate the Local Economy: Less traveling overseas for retreats and negotiations".
Word has it that these overseas meetings are outside the prying eyes of locals and FOI requests.
The writing is on the wall; the Caymanian people really want one man one vote and single member constituencies. They have galvanized their support behind the idea of having a more accountable democracy. Mr. Bush realises One Man One Vote must come for the May vote so instead of trying to throw spokes in the wheel and run from the debate, he should do the right thing and change the law to help avoid the expense he claims a November referendum will bring.
Perhaps his cunning strategy is to spend out all the referendum money on this Cuba trip and then claim we are "too broke" to hold the referendum!

The environment of democracy needs a structural change. You know what the real issue is. There are probably about 3 reasons why YOU BASICALLY HAVE TO DO EXACTLY THAT.
1) You want to know for sure that UDP does not get back in. Saying that you are concerned that throwing votes at Independents and not to PPM might help UDP retain control. It comes down to best of two evils. If I had say either PPM or UDP it would be PPM everytime BUT that's not saying a whole lot.
2) You are also scared that EVEN IF we get Independents you could get a Quagmire in the LA. That is a basic stalemate. Like 7 UDP, 7 PPM and 4 Independents or 6 – 6 – 6.
3) Then finally you are scared that some of the independents really are wolf in sheeps clothing. That is UDP posing as independents or PPM posing as Independents.
These are the things you worry about when you are voting. Is the person I am voting for TRULY independent? Can they hold their ground against aged veterans like Alden and McKeeva? Will they avoid corruption?
I looks like our leader and his prodigal son have kissed and made up over the GLF situation although i don't know if leaving him here to confront a nemisis while him and he boy Ellio dance the night away in Havana is how you reward a disobedient son. Oh well we shall se how it goes.

Our national airline is already a money loser but most feel it provides various benefits tot he island that make it worth the cost. Would it not have been easier to "retreat" to one of the Sister Islands? The board and management would still have been able to find a quiet place to talk but the cost would have been far less and a local business or two would have also benefitted. I guess that wasnt running far enough away.

How else can anyone explain why CG keeps shooting himself in the foot by allowing himself to be used once again – and who will be once more left to take the fall / bad rap when it all falls apart? So the only conclusion left is they know they will fail, and CG will oncemore be the scapegoat. Look folks, it doesnt matter if Mac debates this, you will not get One man one vote (aka democracy) because you need him to agree to it, Turkeys and Christmas. He relies on the present slanted system to control the LA, he isnt about to change that is he? In England, they had a slanted system that required the agreement of the robber barons and the monarchy to change the system they benefitted from. It took hundreds of years and probably the fear of French style revolution to slowly unwind the system.

BTW – why the hell does Cayman Airways haveto waste more of our money on a retreat in Cuba. If they needed a retreat at all there are plenty of facilities in this little country of ours that could use the business. We the people are subsidizing the total cost of this little perk for management and the politicians.

And If the government is going to waste our money on "retreats" at least spend it in Cayman Kai, Morritts, Little Cayman or Cayman Brac so it actualy stimulates the local economy.

There appears to be an interesting story in this. What is the urgent issue with Cayman Air, causing an unsheduled last-minute meeting? Besides the one-member constituency debate, isn't Lord Blencawthra here for meetings with the Premier? To abondon his visitor and the debate, one has to assume there is a very pressing issue. What interest does Cuba have in the national flag carrier?
I think the Airline might have been mistakenly sacrificed to Copa Airlines on the Panama trip.
I am not surprised that our Premier chose not to attend this meeting. It is clear to me as well to other true, fair-minded Caymanians that this would only turn into an opportunity to bash our leader over his reasonable position. He's the leader of our islands and always done what he thought was best for our islands even if some "Caymanians" and their expat backers do not agree! We all need to come together and have as much faith in our Premier as we would have in the word of God!

This is more evidence of the contempt McKeeva Bush feels for his electorate. He knows his time is almost up, so he'll do just as he dam' well likes. That includes running from any proper debate. The only public meeting he'll show up at is one where there is no risk of being questioned about anything.
