Visitor sexually assaulted

| 11/09/2012

(CNS): Police have confirmed that a female cruise passenger was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the George Town area more than six weeks ago. A spokesperson for the RCIPS said Tuesday that a man had now been arrested in connection with the incident but had been released on police bail as the investigation continues. "We can confirm that a 43-year-old man was arrested on Saturday 18 August on suspicion of attempted rape. The arrest was in connection with an incident involving a female cruise ship passenger in the George Town area on Friday 27 July,” she added. No details of where the passenger was visiting from or her age were given but CNS understands that the teenage, visitor was assaulted during an onshore tour.

On the day in question the only ship in port was the Carnival Legend with 2,124 passengers, which arrived in port at 8:30am and left at 4:50pm.

Alot of rapes happen here and not reported or covered up.  Remember a few years ago right before Hurricane Ivan a goldish coloured I believe SUV had grabbed a woman into the vehicle and raped her.  There was  a serious attack and Coral Stone years ago and Spanish Bay in West Bay.  Even back then they tried to cover things up.

I agree to the last comment, i have first hand experiences of politicians harrasing girls in bars…. and boy are they married ??? and with children. These are the same guys you see on sundays with thier wieves and children.

McKeeva's CaymanKind at its best !. Not a very well thought out promotion. We need to get crime under control before we offer such promotions !

I am sorry for the visitor to have had this terrible experience.  I am not interested in her identity or knowing what happened to her, just where.  If this happened in broad daylight in downtown GT as the report infers, the rest of us who work here have a right to know where this occurred and now, so that we can be more cautious when in the area.

Why has it taken six weeks to surface – are we back to the ” Jaws Syndrome ” – ” if they know there may be a problem they may not come “. Joe Public, local or visiting, has a right to up to date information – are the cruise ships aware that the North Sound dolphin is not “Flipper” and is to be avoided.

When people are raped wouldn't it be a good idea for the general public to be made aware of it if just for pure safety issues!

    • Anonymous says:

Actually, suspicion of attempted rape. It might seem like minor details to you but is actually important.

      • Anonymous says:

You're quite right, and it does mean something to me so, 'When someone is arrested on suspicion of attempted rape wouldn't it be a good idea for the general public to be made aware of it if just for pure safety issues!

        • Anonymous says:

Yes, and that was the point of the story. Someone has been arrested and you have been made aware.

This unfortunate incident will cost us dearly in terms of negative publicity. If found guilty, I hope the judge gives him the maximum sentence. I also hope that the Department of Tourism and the Minister in charge will reach out to the victim in an attempt to repair the damage that's already been done.

MacKeeva wants us to be like Jamaica…looks like he's getting us closer.

      • Pressure! says:

Seriously??? There are many things that he is guilty of, but in good conscience, we cannot think of pinning this rape on him! Also, let’s not pretend that rape, sexual assault and violence against women is something that is new here and a “Jamaican thing”. Shame on you.

We have a problem! First that’s the first step in fixing it.

        • Anonymous says:

Not saying its a Jamaican thing…saying it's a thing that happens to tourists in Jamaica…let alone the constant hassle of women.

      • Anonymous says:

Leave Jamaica out of it, you are too  "FORWARD" and "BRIGHT".

Never mind the negative publicity; this incident offends our moral and ethical sensibilities and, if true, has resulted in unacceptable damage to a fellow human being.  If found guilty, the perpetrator should be considered a threat to our community, our culture and our sense of justice —  not simply our reputation.  I hope when you speak of "repairing the damage" that has been done, you don't restrict your concern to the well-being of Cayman's tourist industry.

That this was publicized at all is a miracle.  If there were an "inappropriate" button this article would have vanished in a nanosecond.

There is no crime in Cayman.  There are no gangs or drugs either.  Hurricanes never come near the islands.  We all get chocolate from the government.

How do you purpose repairing an attemped rape or actual rape?  Saying I'm sorry and offering a free ticket to the Cayman Islands can't repair that.  Meting out justice will mean more than anything else that we do.

Several of my lady colleagues, who run frequently in the evenings either along the ETH or Westbay Road , complain of sometimes being harrassed by men in cars/trucks pulling up alongside them and asking if they need a lift. Some men are apparently reasonably pleasant, others not at all.

Whilst that does not constitute an assault as described in this article, it is clearly sexual harrassement, as these ladies are running for fitness and generally dont need a lift. If they were in physical distress or in need of medical attention, it would generally be pretty obvious. This shows, I feel, a slightly alarming disrespect for ladies personal space.

Sooner or later it will end up in something unpleasant happening, so maybe some kind of general education or information needs to be put out.."dont hassle anyone running for fitness unless they are clearly in distress" or even better,  "dont hassle me" means just that.

Record these "invitations" and post them on youtube.

      • Anonymous says:

Yeah, then the wives can fix the punishment.

        • Anonymous says:

The wives would turn a blind eye, just like they do to their husbands cheating ways.  It's all acceptable on this island!!

    • What do you suggest? says:

Would you say we need stronger anti-harassment legislation. I am a man and I am sometimes disgusted to see the way other men interact with women. A lot of men seem to have no respect and treat women as objects, even some of our MLA's are guilty of this.  I was told by a 19 year old that anytime a particular MLA visits her place of work, she is constantly bombarded with the sexual comments and invitations to go out etc, mind you this particular man is married and she knows this, but it does not seem to deter him. I guess if we cannot set examples when we are leaders in society, we certainly cannot expect the general public to do any better.

      • Anonymous says:

Sir, Legislation is part of it, you are quite correct. The other major part, as with other debates running currently on CNS is enforcement. Enforcement, if it is happening in any way shape or form here, is not very visible, which makes it probable that it is not happening. And any good police chief will tell you succesful, safe, well run prosecutions and convictions are great publicity for the police and boost confidence in the police from the public.

Saving peoples lives in the helicopter, the occasional arrest, all good stuff, but what we are talking about here is the fundamental human right of a woman to do what she wants without being harrassed, attacked or otherwise by some pretty unintelligent and uncultured men.(I too ama man and hate this behaviour by my so called "brothers")

So we have to ask questions. Where is the CCTV footage? Is anyone actually monitoring it to send a patrol out for suspicious activity? Or to see if a lady on her own is OK? (West bay road and ETH must have more cameras than anywhere else!!). Other questions must include do the laws currently work, or do they need changing? Are the kids being educated in such a way that everyone understands men and women are equal and harrassement is not an option, either way (and yes, it sometimes happens the other way around too).

Or we find another way. In Sweden, they had a campaign against speeding, featuring men in sporty cars or driving dangerously trying to impress ladies. The ladies, unimpressed as they generally understand such behaviour is dangerous, just made a sign with a small gap between first finger and thumb, indicating that the offending man must have an incredibly small penis if he needs to show off in such a way. Radical, but it worked.

There is anti harassment legislation proposed. But it’s a fig leaf: it’ll never be enforced. Same as all the other shining new legislation that comes in to make us look up to date when in matters like this we are will remain prehistoric. Forever.

FIRST OF ALL, i'd like to say that this man who commited these assaults is SOUTH AFRICAN!!!! He's been doing it for months – and finally got caught!!!

SECOND OF ALL the fact that he's from there – or wherever has no relevance to what he's been doing!!!

He's a dirty scum bag – and need to go to prison!!!
