Whittaker upset with paltry purse for Rosado bout

| 21/09/2012

charles whittaker.jpg(RingTV): In an industry as unforgiving as boxing, one can still find plenty of nice people. Fringe junior middleweight contender Charles Whittaker and Main Events promoter Kathy Duva are two such folks. Unfortunately, outside of the ring, Whittaker might be a little too nice for his own good. The 38-year-old native of the Cayman Islands has taken the scenic route to finally being a step away from a major title shot, as he faces Duva’s charge Gabriel Rosado in the main event of NBC Sports Fight Night this Friday. For a fighter who has suffered a dozen losses, and fights in gyms in the Philippines and nightclubs in Delaware, an IBF title eliminator on national television would seem to be the jackpot. In financial terms though, that’s not the case.

Much of the build-up for Friday’s bout has surrounded Whittaker’s dissatisfaction with his $6,000 purse for the evening.

“A fight like this, an IBF eliminator, on television, it pays more than this. I've fought fights off TV for more than this. I've brought people to the Cayman Islands and paid them more than this,” Whittaker told RingTV.com.

If you didn't like the purse, you didn't need to fight, it's as simple as that.  Unbelievable to complain after the fact.  You fought a good fight, of that there is no doubt, but don't come crying to Cayman afterwards complaining about the money.  You agreed to it a long time ago.

Besides, you will be getting paid a hefty sum from government for nothing when you retire (as you did when you were boxing), so why complain, while hard working Caymanians go off to earn less every day.  Boo Hoo, cry me a river.

You can take the "fudder" out of West Bay but you can't take the "fudder" out of the person.

This is funny. It shows the Emperors New Clothes government we have. It trumpets Whittaker as a national hero and lavishes money on his fights so they can gain political benefits ( “hey Charles be a good UDP monkey and read this script about voting rights to this pretty camera”). But the real test of what he has achieved is his purse on this fight. $6,000. Chicken feed for an undercard journeyman.

  3. What !!!! says:

Yes Charles GOt his boasting behind BEAT last night. Now come here his hard luck story when he come home thats if he come home now HAHAHAHAHA

  4. Knot S Smart says:

Anyone want to beat me up for $6.000?

As a fellow caymanian , I am truly proud of Charles Whittaker. I think he fought a good fight and held up considering his opponent had the advantage of being over 10 years younger, stronger and quicker. Everytime I read comments like those posted here it makes me realize why caymanians never prosper. There is no unity like most other islands have. No one is happy for the next, they are happy to see the next one fall. They are jealous of others success. Charles had so much negativity around him it had to drain him. I don’t think a lot of you could have done what he did. maybe if he had more supportive fellow caymanians to encourage him he could have went further.

Mr. Whittaker you fought a good fight and as a fellow caymanian watching the fight I was very proud and cheered you all the way.

For all my fellow caymanians, stop being so negative, try to find it in your heart to be supportiive of others. Stop the negativity!
    God to bless you.

If he were actually grateful for anything that he receives and has received for a long time, people would support him but all he does is complain.  So, we are just following his lead.

Poor old Charles mauled by a younger fighter yes Cayman read the comments how overjoyed some of these Piece of $#@& posters are and remember that no matter how it plays out or whether you like him or not he is still one of us a Caymanian and that is all that should matter at the end of the day.  Proud of you Killa aleast you tried.

(Apart from the obvious sponsorship) why did we see the Budweiser Logo above his name and not the Cayman Islands Flag?  I wonder what sponsorship deal he has with Budweiser (if indeed they sponsored him, as I am supposing).

Why does he have USA in huge letters across the back of his shorts if he is there repping the CAYMAN ISLANDS?

    Where is our representation?

    • Anonymous says:

… that illegible splurge on the font of his shorts said "Cayman Island" (I couldn't see an son the end?)

If it had to be this way, why couldn't he simply have had 'CAYMAN' in equally huge capital letters on the font?

    • Anonymous says:

He also had "Cayman Island" on the front of his shorts. Stop being so critical. Did you put up any money to sponsor him?

    • Sponsorship says:

Except it only said Cayman Island (no S) – funny, how most people missed that mispelling.

      • Anonymous says:

Missed it?  Nah I didn't miss it, it just took me 8 rounds to see it and realise what it said.  I'd previously been thinking it was some pattern but yes I noticed no 's' too – why on earth they couldn't just put CAYMAN I don't know!

Charles needs to retire. Everytime he speaks he has something negative to say. He is very ungrateful and a poor representative for Cayman. There are many more deserving athletes than Charles. I hope Government does not waste any more money on him.,

    • Stiffed-Necked Fool says:

He going need Mac now because that boxing career got pounded into retirement!

But how Mac going justify paying a retired old man!

Charles really looked out of his depth tonight!

  9. Anonymous says:

Too right, I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning for six grand. Particularly not to face someone with Rosado's track record.

  10. Anonymous says:

i hope you win Charles and decisively ! $ 6000 is not worth getting beat up for . unless it was money someone owed you .otherwise that ,s selling yourself too cheap it’s not worth the trip. Good luck

    He’s gettin screwed!

  12. BORN FREE says:

Whittaker chose to be a professional boxer, PROFESSIONAL, & professional boxers are paid by the sport of boxing, not government. That was his choice! He has relied on government funding too much, so what is his complaint now? The truth be told, Whittaker has had an average career, below average, & that is why he does not command big purses. If he had fought big name fighters instead of no name fighters, promoters would be falling over each other to promote him & pay him big money. What is his beef now? He should take his usual hand out from Bush (& government) & be satisfied with that.

  13. Just Commentin' says:

For an old fighter who has never beaten an opponent of any serious importance in his career, I say $166 per minute is damn good pay! What's the hell is he bitchin' about? You gotta crawl before you can walk.

Hey Whittaker! Here is a hint: Win this one first. Then take the title. I guarentee the $$ will roll in then. Actually earn the right to be called "Killa", because so far we are not impressed. Your nickname ought to be "Hopeful".

Maybe this is what your problem with the 6 G's is. Maybe you know you ain't takin' no title so you want a good paycheck now because you won't be gettin' no shot at the big bux.

  14. McCarron McLaughlin says:

This is good exposure for the Cayman Islands. Good Luck Killa, the next IBFJr Middleweight Champ!

    • Anonymous says:

Well I here watching the fight, but all I can see so far (we have no sound Channel 27?),  is good exposure for Budweiser and the USA…

  15. Anonymous says:

How much did Whittaker make for the "Vote No" campaign?

  16. Anonymous says:

Considering he's paid by the government (so that's who's really paying for the fights) and he sets up most of his fights anyway… I'll pull out my tiny violin.

  17. Anonymous says:

Mac is rubbing off on him.. its all about the money.

Long gone are the days when sportsmen competed for the priveledge and honor of being good enough to do so.

Nevr mind, Mac will have his back.

You mean that $100,000 per year salary from Nation Building Fund not enough?

  19. Anonymous says:

Em he is no Pac man so quit complaining. I guess he thought being friends with Keke came with all kinds of benefits. Nah today bobo

  20. Anonymous says:

Like he didn't know this going in???  How much did Mac pay him for the Anti- OMOV ad?

  21. Anonymous says:

With BigMac promoting him on Government funds, I dont see what his problem is.

    • Stiff-Necked Fool says:

Yea, with all that he getting from being a "Sports Ambassador"  and from the Nation Building Fund, he should be happy and not complain. You know how many of us struggling to make ends meet doing our job(S), note I say jobS, with a capital S, and he getting paid in his job (boxing) on top of getting help by being connected! No Sah! Some want too much!

    • Knot S Smart says:

Dont worry Rosado is soon going to send him to 'Boxing Neverland'..

      Tick-Tock-Tic-Tock-Tic-Tic-Tic…

    • Anonymous says:

Perhaps he can dip into the Nation Building Fund if goes to church once in a while.

    • Anonymous says:

I will tell you what the problem is…..his attitude!!

Oh my God, as much as I like boxing, his attitude alone turns me off, not only the sport but him. I guess I should support him, for being a good fighter, because I do believe he is. But that attitude, good jeepetons!
