Mac ‘knocking on doors’

| 18/10/2012

KnockOnDoor.jpg(CNS): Admitting that the premier is travelling in Asia, his office has released a statement with limited details of his latest extended overseas trip. Following criticisms from the opposition about his continued absence and his failure to inform the country where he was and why as well as the neglect of domestic matters, the premier said he was “knocking on doors” in Asia, a “land of expanding economies where investors are looking for new opportunities.” Bush said that no government, including his, could change the economic situation Cayman faces over four years given world conditions, “but we must try,” he said. “In today’s world, that means knocking on doors.”

In the statement which was not sent to CNS directly from the premier’s office, as is now customary, but forwarded via another source, Bush attempted to justify his travelling as well as that of the deputy premier.

“Every government must travel to conduct business. Whether it’s a lot of travel or little, all depends on the business that has to be conducted. My travels and that of the Deputy Premier don't normally overlap however this time it could not be avoided because of the nature of the meetings, hers for postal matters and mine for finance, both of which had agendas which were set by the international bodies, each in their very different but significant areas of responsibility,” Bush's statement read.

“We have to go to the right places, to knock on the right doors; whether that is to try to stop the EU from forcing us to 'converge' our financial services legislation with theirs, as we have had to go all the way to Greenland to do, or it is to seek the right kind of investment, as I am now doing,” he added.

Blaming the opposition for the financial woes of the country, the premier said he could not bring new opportunities “using the same old strategies that the PPM used,” and as the finance and tourism minister he could not find new business “by sitting down in the Government Administration Building” or “playing dominoes in some bar”.

Although the details of the trip were limited in the statement, as reported on CNS previously, the premier’s office revealed that Bush had been to meetings related to the IMF and World Bank conference, which had taken place in Tokyo. The office also stated that the premier was “pursuing business opportunities” in other places in Asia, including Hong Kong and China.

According to other sources the premier is expected back on 28 October.

The Legislative Assembly will return on 5 November, and addressing the opposition question about the Framework for Fiscal Responsibility — the agreement he has already signed with the UK — and the need to pass it into law, Bush said that it and “any Constitutional matters” would be dealt with in what he called a “manner that is to the benefit of the people” but he did not explain what that meant.

Since the 21 day deadline for any legislation coming before the House at the next meeting  has already passed, the premier will not be able to bring the FFR without falling foul of that constitutional requirement.

Meanwhile, CNS has submitted FOI requests regarding the travelling by both the premier and deputy premier, including the destinations, the reasons for the various trips, the delegates that accompanied them and the cost to the public purse. The request has been acknowledged but no information has been released in connection with the request.

See the premier’s full statement below.

Reminds me of an old Dave Edmunds lyric –

    I hear you knocking
    But you can't come in
    I hear you knocking
    Go back where you been

Incidentally, I have exactly that same brass knocker on my front door – he better not come round my place.

I have to ask.  Why is the Postmaster not attending the "Postal Conference"?  Oh never mind, I already know the answer.  The Deputy Premier will tell her all she needs to know.  Cayman will have to sell a lot of stamps to pay for that trip.

  3. Anonymous says:

Are there any statistics showing exactly how much "business" for the Cayman Islands these trips have generated in comparison to the dollars spent?

It is an embarassment that these two are the world's idea of our country and it's people.  And to the poster who said they are traveling before they get de-elected…traveling isn't the worst of what they are doing.  They will never have to work again when they are finished…hope the other UDP members take care of their futures as I truly hope every voter sees that they are cut of the same cloth and allowed all of this to happen.  Shame on all of you.

  5. anonymous says:

From the time the UDP got in to office they have been blaming the PPM and have been waiting for the PPM to give them solutions.  It just goes to show their inability to come up with any solutions.  If PPM put the Islands in this mess, why are they asking the PPM for solutions.  PPM are not the majority Government, UDP is and they are the ones running the show.  Mac, remember you told the PPM that you did not want to hear anything from them, as they were the Government that tied your hands. So…Why ask them for solutions? Huh?

  6. anonymous says:

Who pays the UDP Political Analyst, Richard Parchment's salary? Is his salary paid by Nation Builders, Cayman Islands Government, the UDP Party or from the Premier's operating budget.  Mr. Auditor General, you needs to investigate this, as far as I know, he is not employed by the Cayman Islands Government yet he goes on every exotic  trip the Premier goes on.

The saddest (and most frustrating) part of this latest episode is that it is has become too obvious the Premier, Deputy-premier and all their friends and flunkies have decided to travel around a bit before being de-elected. And there is absolutley nothing anyone can do about it. We can rant and rave all we want while they pamper their asses, stay in expensive hotels and go out to dinner but it doesn't affect the outcome at all. They're there- we're here. And everyone paid for it and they can't hear us and chances are wouldn't care if they could. To add insult to injury, while they're on continous holiday they're also collecting enormous salaries and sometimes pensions. I don't remember…..was there an Oath of Office?

Cayman will come crashing down as the economy of the word becomes more difficult.  Our leaders need to fix the problems at home before they try to compound it more by bring guests in with their own sets of demands and problems.   The government need to fix the many problems in this country and it's not all about development.  I cannot believe we Caymanians had such a wonderful country and becauseof greed and corruption we are on the verge of collapse.   The Cayman Islands were doomed since 2003 and have been on a decline since then at least for Caymanians.    For those of us who are lucky enough to find some where else to go should.

      • Expat says:

As one of the "worker bee" expats who tried to start a life in Cayman (be it permanent or the 7-year variety), I can assure you that the decline hurts expats as well.  My job security dried up, the condo I bought dropped in value, and the future isn't brightened by the fact that the Island is under the control of a child having a tantrum.  I can only hope that we're at the bottom of the crash and that when he's gone the future might get better.

The Premier is knocking on green doors the kind that havelots of money to invest and want a good place to do business with little or no red tape.  Saudia Arabia has lots of millionaires with money to invest how many do we have here doing business?  Many wealthy Arabs want to do investments outside of their region and not necessarily in tax jurisdictions so Cayman is the perfect environment. There are also many millionaires in China that want to invest here.  The Premier need to invite all the people that have the money to invest in the country give them PR and give them concessions and let them invest in this country it will be one of the best moves that he can make at this juncture.  The country needs new investors and investment at this moment in time.  Wealthy Arabs and Chinese are what we need and not the many third world free loaders and their dependents that we have here living off our social service department  those that we gave status to in 2003.  The wealthy investors that the Premier is seeking to attract are just the kind of people that we need.  With time they will be able to turn the economy around and stop this country from become a financial and social disaster.  In time we just might become another Dubai if we allow the Arabs in. Everyone else got an opportunity and all that we got out of that was debt, social and moral decline.  The Arabs and Chinese are the people with the money now and the Premier is very right in trying to attract them here.  Most Arabs are very moral people and they will bring clean living to our society, we won't have to worry about our young people being led astray like they have been since the late 70s todate by outside influences that changed and corrupted our system and society.  Now is the time to give another culture a chance, we have tried so many and is worst off.  Let us welcome the Arabs and Chinese now.

Two issues here…. Any investors the Premier may be speaking to must know the state of Cayman's finances. They after all do research. Unbalanced and missing accounts, non-compliance with directives and agreements with the U.K., ongoing investigations of possible financial irregularities, government contracts being cancelled, etc. It will be very difficult to convince anyone it would be a sound investment given the track record of his administration. Secondly it is a stretch to imagine the Premier, who has extremely limited knowledge of finances (see above), let alone international finance speaking coherently with any large scale investor. But the fact is "knocking on doors" in faraway places is a good way to avoid reality and much like the man who goes to the bar in the evening dealing with important domestic issues. We're sorry Mr. Premier that dog doesn't hunt.

"Bush said that no government including his could change the economic situation Cayman faces over four years given world conditions"

This statement alone is the DEATH KNELL for the UDP candidates in the May 2013 Elections. This is an admission that the UDP did not change the economic situation in Cayman, and that the UDP administration did not do Cayman any favours during the last 3.5 to 4 years.

Instead, what they have done is:

    1) waste money on lavish, first class travel and hotels,

    2) overspent by 450,000 with Cohen deal,

    3) caused additional risk and expense in the millions with the GLF lawsuit settlement,

    4) caused additional expense with no results with the legal aid consultancy contract for McField and Pitcairn (strong UDP supporters),

    5) cause public servants to be fired for doing their job and doing the right thing according to the law,

    6) cause the public purse to pay for 3 senior civil servants (who were put on required leave once UDP took office as Donovan Ebanks said the then Chief Secretary Mr. George McCarthy "felt that their presence within the organisation was not desired") while obtaining no benefit for paying them,

    7) wasted over 70,000 on the Panama flight bashment by shutting down the route after only three months,

    8) wasted money with Dr. Frank and NHDT by building the first "affordable homes" then knocking them down 5 years later and building more expensive "affordable homes" then claiming that they cant sell them because they are too expensive (and no one can build homes affordably to meet Code [yet Frank Hall Homes does this everyday]) so they will rent them,

    9) not to mention the premier being subject to three RCIPS investigations,

The Cayman Islands has no official standing within either the IMF or the World Bank as it is not a sovereign state. The most a Cayman Delegation can do is to sit behind HMG’s Delegation if invited to do so HMG.

09.00 Suspect you are an expat? Your comment sounds a little prejudiced, trying to be too superior, verging on the supremist…I am an ex-pat, the difference possibly is that if I dont like what goes on here, I will either make non-prejudiced comments about the general situation, laugh at it or go home. And when I get home will do the same about the situations there, which are different from here, but all the same unpleasant. No-one is better than anyone else, just different.

        truth hurts does it?

No, your garbage is what is hurting this country, why dont you just leave, no one is holding your hands.

If you are a Caymanian, and spitting out the  BS , then you are a born loser…. get with the right people and get a life.

You cant go around cursing the Government, and then go begging for favors.

Yes thank God that we still have Caymanians politician in the LA, but don't get it twisted the current leaders were mostly voted in by "new caymanian voters" and not the real Caymanians.

The premier, in the past, was out looking for "business" but only came home with law suits.

We need a competent Cayman salesman out there to bring in business. McKeeva is not the man for the job, he should delegate to someone who can do the job well.

    • The Thinker says:

Delegate someone who can do the job well???  None of his cronies are qualified!

I think there is some truth to the idea that our Premier – not necessarily Bush who hopefully won't be there after the election -should do some travelling and "knocking on doors". I don't object to that. I do object however to Bush's carrying of his political cronies, L Dilbert, R Parchment and, especially, P Parchment (what the hell does he actually DO as deputy London Rep??) all over the place, no doubt in Business Class and in particular I object to Julianna's totally useless trips-with-no-purpose with Paul to the world's pleasure spots such as Doha, staying in $1000 per night rooms. For this reason alone (and there are others!), we must get rid of the UDP.

I am ashamed to read the Press release from the Premier, it reads like a hate letter written by a poorly educated child. I really wonder why he has a press office because this was obviously copied and pasted from an email the Premier sent to them.

I hear the Premier is over int he Philippines with Charles Whittaker XXXX. This is just too much to bear, and yet we sit and wait for someone else to deal with this idiot.

But what more would you expect? It IS written by a poorly educated child. However, his education up until he was in the 7th grade may not have been poor, it's just that beyond that was nonexistent. I certainly wouldn't consider him aRoads Scholar and contrary to what Mac thinks, living life does not give you the knowledge to run a country even one as small as this.

      I thought Christians didn't gamble.

      • Denof Theeves says:

You are absolutely correct. True Christians actually realize that gambling is founded in the love of money which is the root of all kinds of evil.

If the gentleman in question is indeed a Christian, then he will need to repent which means changing his mind and stopping this sin by the grace of God.

Hopefully he's not too far gone, but if he is, God will certainly deal with him. I wonder if there are any churches left that would dare preach that message. Perhaps they would be afraid to lose their piece of the Nation Building Pie?

Come on pastors, step up to the plate……no silly, not the offering plate!

Yes, instead of playing dominoes in a bar, some of our politicians hung around ATMs in Vegas looking for cash or offering "consulting services"  at price for matters related to their offical businees that was much, much, more constructive.

There is nothing wrong with playing dominoes- however one must know how to add up  so we would never have to worry about our Prem doing that ever!!
