Anglin admits drunk driving

| 27/11/2012

rolston good.jpg(CNS): In a surprise turn of events, the education minister has changed his not guilty plea to guilty part way through a trial relating to his arrest last May for driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving. Ahead of the scheduled continuation of the trial, which started earlier this month, Roslton Anglin changed his plea this morning, admitting to both driving while drunk and driving carelessly. Anglin told the press outside the courtroom that his change of position on the charges had come after discussions with family and friends as well as prayer. The minister will be attending a drunk driving course and will return before  the magistrate for sentencing in March, the court heard.

Reading from a prepared statement outside the courthouse on Tuesday morning, Anglin apologised to the people of Cayman and said that he had come before the court and accepted full responsibility for his actions. He said he should not have been driving that night and, as a result, had decided to enter the guilty plea after much prayer and discussion.

The minister said it was in the best interest to put aside the issue so that he could continue to serve the Cayman people.

The minister limited his comments about the night in question because, he said, the case was not over yet, and the presiding magistrate, who had warned Anglin in the court to limit his comments about the case, still had to decide sentence.

How different things would have been for you/people would have thought of you had you only admitted guilt (given the evidence!!) from the start. This is not about having a drink or a li'l too much. It's not even about the DUI – as bad as that is. The pure fact that you lied – but that's what alcohol can do. Should we be less harsh on you since you may not have known what you were saying because you were drunk? I asked my teenage daughter about this whole thing but she didn't give you any chances. She did say she felt sorry for your daughter. A sad day…

Is this the same Rolston Anglin who fell alsleep at the wheel of his car several months ago and crashed into a wall in West Bay.? If it is, one would expect a MInister of Education to learn from his mistakes. If you are tired or been drinking, don't drive.

Now he must resign in order to let someone else, who will hopefully set our children a far better example of how to behave in a socially acceptable manner.

    Resign Rolly Resign!!

For goodness sake, you have been the Minister of Education!!  Surely at the minimum that meant setting a good example for our children.  You have been a total embarrassment!! If you in any way care about our children then you should ensure that our children are taught the valuable lesson of 'every action has a consequence' and you should resign. If you really want to make this right then we expect you to be fully accountable and recognise that you no longer have the moral authority to be held up as an example to our youth.  You will be of far greater service to our youth if you show them that they will be severe public and private penalities for DUI and particularly so, if you are a public figure.

Do the right thing Rolly. Resign for goodnes sake!!

FELLOW PARENTS – WE SHOULD DEMAND HIS RESIGNATION.  WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT HE HAS BEEN.

Mr. Anglin you should be ashamed of yourself considering your position being an elected member to the cayman islands. We know things happen in life. However to initially lie about the events then to now try and come clean is a poor cry to your elected position. With so many young male drivers dying on our roads you should set an example for the students that you are minister for. I am truly sorry for you but your behavior is very disappointing.

Same problem theoretically applies to travel to the US, although I understand they only take it into account if there are repeat convictions.

Nothing personal, but we need to hold the line on this one, otherwise we will have even more of an uphill battle to bring our country back from the brink of self-distruction.  Yes, others are alleged to have done worse and they should be dealt with as well.  Now that he has confessed then he should follow through and start to make amends and to do what is right. Rolston has a historic opportunity to turn the tide, re-affirm his personal ethics and do the right thing for his country and then may be one day in the future he will have re-earned our trust.

All persons, no matter who they be are considered to be innocent till proven guilty and this is the case with the Minister. Whilst I xwould have given him a lot more credibility had he plead guilty from the beginning, he should be given the benefit of the doubt as to why he has now chosen to d what the entire country wanted from the onset. With this being said, we must move on from this as in this writers eyes the issue is one of a personal nature and should not deter him from continuing in his position. I do not vote therefore I have no allegiance to any party, person or grouping!!!!!!

Reading the "three stories" attachment, simply confirms what we suspect, that the truth will always take second place to convenience with a person like this. Rolston must have realized that a more serious charge of perjury was looming, had he pleaded not guilty, and so put himself in a position of having to lie to the court, whichever of the three stories he chose to use. I suppose he could have stuck to the fourth story, the Truth, and come out of this with at lest some respect remaining.  And  he thinks this is leadership! "  I spoke to God, and he's forgiven me" will be next line we'll have to listen to.

    • Diogenes says:

Whilst I don't disagree with the essence of your comment, simply pleading not guilty would not constitute perjury even if convicted.  A plea is not testimony, and has to be free from threat of being treated as such to prevent there being any bias towards compelling people to plead guilty (because the penalty for perjury exceeded the punishment for the offence being tried).

Whenever a teacher applies for the post as a teacher in any school but especially in the Government schools, they have to sign a contract AFTER reading rules and what is expected of you as a teacher, and if a teacher is even seen in a picture with alcohol in their hands, well if they are lucky not to lose their job, they have plenty explaining to do. Now we don't have to guess what would happen if a teacher crashed their vehicle at 2am and tested at the scene aswell as at the Police station and both times were found to be over the limit, the teacher would not have a job in the morning.

Now you really telling me that The Minister of Education, who is suppose to set an example to all of the Cayman people much less to the very same people he has under him in the Education system.

I hope we all know that he will carry on as if nothing happened and thats because we allow all the UDP members to break the law and just carry on: just think of incidents of 2 candidates being allowed to run in the 2009 elections even though they did not comply with election laws, or fighting in hotels during Pirates Week, being involved in the importation of Explosives without the proper licence, my oh my, I could go on but there is not enough space, but again we will just stand by and let them get away with whatever they do, so we take what we get – "Dat wha we get"!

Can you imagine our poor children receiving their Diplomas from the Education Minister who is now officially a "Drunkard" who has to take a Drunk driving course. Don't tell me I can't call him a Drunkard as a "sober" person does not take a "drunk driving course" so I say again, OUR EDUCATION MINISTER IS A DRUNKARD! Imagine how this looks to the world!

Mr. Anglin, to err is human.  It is quite understandable that on the night in question, maybe out of embarrassment and your position as a poltical leader, you may have been in a panic.  However, after realising you made such a grave mistake you should have taken the intiiative to admitting your wrongs and do whatever was deemed necessary in correcting same.

Now to suffer public disgrace and humiliation at what cost.  I think that one such as yourself holding a high official position should be used as an example within our educational system.  You're looked upon as a role model, and the way the judicial system has dealt with you gives our children the feeling that it is right to drink and drive, lie about it when caught, and seek counselling after the fact.

What if things had played out differently on the night in question.  What if a life or lives had been taken at your expense.  Would you have been able to live with that guilt.  As an Educational Leader, pleaseexercise WISDOM.

Have a little more respect for your family and the people you serve.  Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that you had a female passenger in your car at 2:30 am and did not know what her name was?  What was this 'caribbean conference that you attended?  Also where were you coming from or going to at that time of morning?

13:30 For Gods sake please !!,  Tell me if half of Cayman has not been drunk and driving before at some time.?  and if all of them had to be fired from their jobs, we whould have half of Cayman walking the streets.   Why are we acting like the man  Robbed the liquor store.  If we are honest we will admit that at closing time after all of the cock tail parties and week end bashes everyone drives home under the influence.  Which includes Businessmen, Policeman, Lawyers, Judges, politicians and Laymen.  They leave the party under the influence, so how did you think they would have gotten  home?  FLY?

I do not believe that this is something Mr Anglin did deliberately; and so if Pin drop, story bend. I would suggest that we give some consideration about our own lives of being Judge and Jury.

If the police would begin stopping people at 1. am in the mornings leaving the bars and clubs tell me where in Cayman prison you could find space to hold the drivers under the influence?.   95% of of the drinkers drive home under the influence.. Now do not for one moment think that I support driving under the influence, No I do not.  But I condem persons who are living in glass house and throwing stones.

Mr Anglin I am very happy that you took to prayer and confession for this.  God sees and knows everything and everyone's heart.   You did the right thing by pleading guilty to the court.  I accept you as being a human being like anyone else, where in so being, it is human to err.

You do realize that based on his blood alcohol content this was not a case of being a bit tipsy and trying to sneak home.  .112 alcohol in the average persons blood would render you absolutely incapable of maintaining a car in a straight line, incapable of remembering a womans name, incapable of remembering what story you are telling, incapable of clear vision or coherant speech, unable to stand still or walk in a straight line, and quite capable of murdering an innocent person who happens to be travelling at the same time.

Personally i would rather be a clerk in a liquor store being held up by gunpoint and hope that the villian has the good judgement to take my money and leave me unharmed, than being in a vehicle travelling late a night not knowing that the driver coming toward me is completely incapable of making sound choice and could easily and unknowingly take my life or a member of myfamilies or leave any of us permanently disabled.

Had he been a man as some of you now say he has stepped up to be, an apology to his family, his contituents, his fellow members of the LA and all the people of the Cayman Islands should have come out the morning following the car crash. Followed by the admision of seeking treatment for substance abuse, promising never to drink again, to hire a driver with his own money, to step down as a minister while maintaining a role on the back bench, to ask forgivenes THEN!!!! Maybe, just maybe he would deserve some sympsthy and be forgiven.

Now, he just deserves what he gets. And I sincerely hope that does not include the opportunity to be re-elected.

The Minister was not out on a college jaunt and got into a little trouble, he was on a drunken drive and could have killed someone (even a tourist on WB road) I wonder what you would be saying if he had done that? He is supposed to be setting an example for our kids not out getting his jollies and having a hoot of a time.

For your information Mr Sensible BodddenTowner,  I have seen Ministers of the Legislative Assembly  outside the Country clubs in George Town from this same ya Bodden Town district so drunk that they Peed up their pants too drunk to get to the bath room.   But guess what?  He got into his car and drove home.   Lucky no police, lucky no accident.   So Mr Sensible Bodden Towner, take the floor on that.   You see that is the reason why people and followers like you do the same thing over and over and over again.   You are always willing to jump up and down beating your chest and do not have the slightest of reason for doing anything. .  Besides the fact of saying that i am a "UDP do or die"  My learned friend let me tell you this I  stand firm for what I believe in.   I am a voice in my district something which you cannot say.   How many times have you stood up for anyone in this Town without hiding behind behind a cloak.  Be bold and stand up for what you believe in with a name behind it.

I am not defending Rolston Anglin because of driving while drunk, I am more critizing people like you who are living in glasshouse and throwing stones.

Anyone who reads my comments have the right to pick passages they do not agree with.  That is their democratic right to express what they want; howeverI do hope you realize that there are more Caymanians dying every day from stress, high cost of living, cannot pay bills or buy food,  not from driving under the influence.

You have  fully well read my comments and noted that I do not support driving under the influence of alcohol, but  I do not blame you for trying so very, very very,  hard  to be a  Sensible Bodden Towner.

I do not socialize or fratinize with Mr.Anglin.  I do not know where, if in West Bay he live.  I am not acquainted with his family nor his political friends.  So how am I supporting him in apolitical way.

Of course I am sensible enough not to be speaking for all Bodden Towners; however those with sence can read my comments and yours and judge which of them make sense.

Last but not least, and I am laughing as  I have noted YOUR SUGGESTIONS, that I should be supporting the NEW PPM team for Bodden Town. Interesting to see how many of their husbands (or wives too nowadays) are lucky enough to make it to their hot spots with "matey" at 2:30 am in the mornings without running off the road.

So, yes, I also condemn those that are living in those glass houses and literally sprint to their vehicles every evening while coming out of the liquor stores with their lil q-q before they're spotted by people in the 5 o'clock rush hour traffic. Ah, boy……Sometimes you really gotta wonder!

Well lets see if he loses his license like everyone else that gets a DUI! It is amazing how often our MLAs break the laws of this country. I have seen 2 XXXX MLAs driving and talking on their phones without the hands-free devices. One from each party and almost every day. One of them sure talks alot and the other used to talk for one of the parties. One can only hope that they would abid by the laws they put in place!

Well good on him for finally admitting the truth.

But the dog food tale was funny! Definitely the best of the three.

“Honorable” Rolston Anglin do the right thing!

The simple fact of the attempt to cover up, not that he messed up, but that he for a long period of time attempted to hide the truth, and outright lie to the authorities to do so.  Even more disturbing to me is the fact that he had to think, discuss and pray to come to the conclusion to tell the truth!  This is a black and white deal, either he was or was not drunk.  And most obviously now he was (as if anyone on this island thought otherwise LOL)!

I do not believe the “honorable” minister should be allowed to sit in the LA as of today, as his moral compass is very obviously in need of recalibration. I am pleased that he found the straight and narrow in this instance, but his personal salvation is completely separate from his public duties and responsibilities.  He has shown your country how even in the most obvious of cases, the truth need not be told rather deny, deny, deny is a viable option.  This is not acceptable for someone responsible for the decisions of national importance.  If he wants to live his life in this fashion, that is perfectly fine with me, but this is absolutely NOT acceptable for a public official!

Mr. Anglin, be the example to the people of the Cayman Islands, and more importantly the youth and do the “honorable” thing, take your punishment, step away from your roll as minister, as you have tarnished it enough already.  Show the world that you as a man are willing to be accountable for your actions, and do the right thing, restore “Honor” to the office that you presently hold by stepping down voluntarily.

    Wait…..did he say..CONTINUE TO SERVE?

Oh no…….you have failed conspiciously to be fit to lead, and have demonstrated poor judgement choices. I thank you for a being a man and owning up to it, but it is still very dissappointing to see you only did so when the weight of evidence was so far against you. If i were the judge I would not look favourably upon this change of heart mid-way through the trial. You have wasted a great deal of other peoples time….from the Police to the Courts, you have made numerous poor choices, potentially lied about those poor choices…until the weight of evidence cornered you. You are NOT fit to be a politician.

      Your last sentence is interesting!

    • Anonymous says:

Oh he is fit to be a politician just not a Leader nor an example to our youth, huge difference there.

      My Dear Anonymous,

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you.   I think he fits right in with politicians!

I would have given Mr. Anglin credit for his guilty plea if he did so from the start. Everyone, at some point in their lives have driven under the influence of alcohol, Regardless the amount. But, based on the fact that he lied I don’t think I can support him anymore. If he would lie about a decision like this, how do I know if he will not lie about other things.

    • Anonymous says:

I would give you a thumbs up for most of your post except the "Everyone, at some point in their lives have driven under the influence of alcohol". There are people who would never do that and not just people who don't drink. Amongst those who disagree with you are those of us who have lost loved ones, in my case a cousin at 19 years old to drunk drivers. The idea that "most people" or "everyone" does a certain thing and that makes it OK is ridiculous and used way too often by people to excuse their behaviour.

Finally someone in the UDP that takes personal responsibility for their actions. Ole buddy Rollie this might finally pay off for you in the end. Now do the Honourable thing and honour your sacred vessel.

    • Anonymous says:

I would like to contradict your statement that "Everyone at some point in their lives have driven under the influence of alcohol"   Such a statement is absolutely false.  In case you fail to associate with non-drinkers; please be enlightened that there are many who do not drink alcoholic beverages and never have.  Perhaps you should start attending a church whose leaders and members do not drink alcohol or accept it in their circles.
I never have drank alcohol and know many others in the same rank.  I can furnish names
of a number of people and churches that are not to be included in your claim, if you should need them.

Good for him but – why would it take four months for the sentence to be determined.

    • Anonymous says:

Does he have a probation officer, will he be fined, will he lose his licence, will he pay for the 'counselling' course or will he attend social services counselling, how much was he over the limit…..

A good decision but one I'd have more respect for if he hadn't tried to tough it out (and waste valuable public resources) at the earlier hearing.

Moral – listen to your conscience, not your lawyer.

    • Anonymous says:

Are you calling his lawyer a ‘valuable public resource’? C’mon!!!

      • Anonymous says:

No I'm talking about the wasted court time – we all know what his lawyer is.

So one of our "leaders" finally admits to being a liar!

While he was making his confessions he should have also come clean as to why he had a young lady in the car with him.

Unlike big mac, his hands are not clean and his heart is not pure. SMH

  109. Knot S Smart says:

Thats a more Honourable thing to do than to waste the Court's time and our tax payers dollars… Thank you Rolly…

Although there is something that is not clear to me from this statement:

'The minister will be attending a drunk driving course'. Does this mean that the course will teach him how to drive better when drunk?

And if so once he has finished the course and mastered the art of driving while drunk – will he teach the rest of us?

  110. Jonas Dwyer says:

Well done Mr. Anglin, you are as human as otehrs who will villifi you in your moment of weakness, not remembering that the Father if you ask always forgives these moments.

  113. Anonymous says:

So if you lie about something, then admit you were lying, does that mean you are still a liar?

  114. Anonymous says:

He should have done it from the beginning and set a proper example for society; when you make a mistake, do something wrong, or break the law, be a man and accept responsibility for your actions.  I don't believe his good friend would have that sort of guts though.

  115. Cheese Face says:

He changed his plea because of prayer??

    What a strange statement.

  116. Ed says:

A "DRUNK DRIVING COURSE"!  What the hell is that?  A course on how to drive safely when you are drunk?

The only thing he has to learn is not to drive ever after he's been drinking.  I hope that he has to pay costs.  He has wasted the Court's time and money because after you have failed a breath test there is never a defence and a competent lawyer should have advised him of that.

  117. Anonymous says:

Really? He needed to pray and have discussion with friends to know he should tell the truth and not waste the court's time? Wow. That says it all.

  118. Anonymous says:

Way to come clean and set an example for others when they make this mistake.

Now take his license and punish him accordingly.

    • Anonymous says:

The point is not really about coming clean….but whether he lied to the police, the courts and to himself beforehand. He is a model of poor decision making…..yet feels he can lead us? NO.
