Bush set to face the people
(CNS): The former Cayman Island premier is scheduled to hold a public meeting in George Town this evening, when he is expected to speak about his recent ousting from office and the new shape of the United Democratic Party. The political group is now divided between support for the ‘former UDP Five’ now holding government and the ‘Bush Four’, following the ousting of McKeeva Bush’s government on Tuesday. Following a meeting with Bush and the UDP membership last night, it is understood that he moved to oust the five from the UDP and is alleged to have accused them all of various questionable dealings.
Bush, Mike Adam, Capt Eugene Ebanks and Ellio Solomon walked across the floor during the no confidence motion on Wednesday, causing a split in the party. According to sources inside the UDP, Bush is not going quietly and will remain in the political game. Confident that his arrest will not impede his political career and insisting he has done nothing wrong, Bush appears to be ready for what is likely to be a major political battleground in the May 2013 general election.
When Juliana O’Connor-Connolly held her first press briefing yesterday as premier, she and her new cabinet colleagues admitted that they did not now know exactly where they stood in relation to the UDP and being ousted from the party was a risk the five of them took when they made the decision to put country first ahead of their leader.
It is understood that the membership is now lining up behind both sides but it appears Bush will be laying claim to the continued leadership of the original UDP, while those supporting the new government are likely to take on a new moniker in the coming months as the election campaign begins in earnest.
Although the former UDP 5 were unsure of their party label, they did make it clear they would all be running in the next election, including Cline Glidden, who, after joining the new Cabinet, said he was reconsidering his earlier decision to exit the political arena at the next election.
The UDP boss will now be seeking to redefine the party, create a new West Bay team to ensure his own return the Legislative Assembly and take stock on the other districts. With time ticking on the election calendar and as a veteran of the political game, the former premier is likely to concentrate only on George Town, where the six seats will prove a critical component, given the loss of his two Bodden Town members, who will now inevitable split the UDP vote.
Bush is scheduled to speak at 7:30pm at the courthouse in George Town. The former premier was arrested at his home in West Bay some ten days ago (Tuesday 11 December) on suspicion of theft and various offences under the anti-corruption law. The allegations relate to the misuse of a government credit card and the importation of a consignment of dynamite without the correct permits. He has denied all of the accusations and described the arrest as a witch hunt by the UK fuelled by his political foes.

Cayman is a rich place too, 5th largest financial center in the world with more work permit holders than native people, yet there is over 6% unemployment and some poverty. There are people here that are now finding it very difficult to find food to give their family. Last time I checked BVI, Bermuda and Monaco did not have these problems and we are equal to or above them. The average Cayman lives in denial and those who are old enough are still trapped in the late 70s and 80s, and the rest are some where in the clouds. I can believe that Mac is not a wealthy person because he gave away too much and and quite honestly he received far too little in in return. I feel displaced and really since I had not choice in the matter I wouldhave preferred if he had give 3,000 status to financially secured retirees we would still be able to say we have no unemployment in this country. As much as his political colleague in TCI did he is not panhandling he ran and seeked asylum but I believe he received and stashed enough or all of his friends in high places did not abandon him. He was not living the paupers file in Brazil, as matter of fact it is reported that he was living in a very affluent neighbourhood then can't say the same thing about his accomodations today as I believe he is now an official guest of the Brazilian government at the request of HM government at Ary Franco Prison.

As far as I can see Mac gave away govt's money, not his own, and when it came to 'electioneering' he had plenty of wealthy backers. Anyone who draws down a govt. salary of CI$13,000 per month, receives a pension of CI$8,000, has not paid any of his own bills for the last 3 1/2 years, receives 'consultancy fees' to tune of $750,000 per transaction is a wealthy man. The police will need to be able to trace his assets which are probably well-hidden.

Interesting that many people on this forum choose to opt out of listening to what he has to say. Is this not what has got us into the mess we find ourselves? A couple of days ago many people were acknowledging that what has gone on was probably not the fault of one man alone and the rest of his "team" were, at the very least, complicit in the whole shenanigans (and we all know that it goes beyond that for some of these people who have been having their cake and eating it).
If the man has something to say that is relevant to whether these people should be in power or get your vote in May then we should be listening so that we can all make the most informed decisions possible.
This isn't about Mac and his ravings, but about what we do going forward and who we cast our votes for – someone who might be acting in our interests and not just their own.

I beg to differ my friend. I was there with some of the PPM candidates and we were shocked to see the cross section of persons in attendance. Yes you are right that there was loyal Jamaicans but trust me, there was also many loyal Caymanians there. Guesstimate put the crowd around 1500 and maybe 30% was Jamaican. The turn out was shocking!

Wishful thinking, and having followed Mr.Bush’s political career since the very start I know where you’re coming from, but times have changed and surely this is a different kettle of fish with the arrest and all these pending charges ahead. I believe this really is the end for him. But time will tell.
I hope it is the end for him, We, the poorer people of these islands do not need this man jaunting all over the world, visiting the Chinese, the Arabs and every other questionable country in the world, while we cannot get supplies or food for our indigent bed-ridden family members, I supported McKeeva years ago when he first decided to run for politics. I believed in him and what he promised to do for the country, but now I see that he has always been in this thing aolely for himself, family and friends. The rest of us can starve to death, for all he cares. I think it is time that he stays out of politics for the good of the country.

That may be well and true, however, I wish to make it abundantly clear to each and every UDP / PPM / Independent political hopeful that this voter could not give less of a damn about their personal and sub-group beefs.
The closest hint of any type of behaviour that serves to undermind or discredit the reputation and integrity of the Cayman Islands on the global stage come next election will result in my refusal to support the offending candidate(s).
The truth is, not a single member of the UDP or PPM camp is indispensable to this country and very few of them are able to point fingers from an unblemished platform.
Stick to the relevant issues, e.g.:
These are but a few of the most pressing issues facing our community today (although I am certain some CNS readers will disagree as they do not concern them … yet!).
Any bickering over what breakaway faction of whatever political group did to the other is completely and utterly irrelevant and immaterial to the greater issues at hand.

What a breath of fresh air. and I note that despite your focus on the larger big-picture issues facing our country not a single person has commented, or given a thumbs up. True testimony that for the vast majority this is not about what is best for Cayman, but about throwing insults and being divisive. the majority of posters on this stream don't even ralize that they are just as guilty as those they throw stones at. I know the reaction will of course be insults thrown at me. However, thank you Whodatis for giving me hope that we can turn things around if those of us who really want to take the time to speak.

According to court records, one of the imported substances was an emulsion containing Ammonium Nitrate and Petroleum Distillates weighing 25 tons.
Ammonium nitrate can be induced to decompose explosively by detonation. Large stockpiles may also detonate, as happened in theTexas City Disaster of 1947. This, the deadliest industrial accident in US history, killed nearly 600 people. I would not characterize Ammonium Nitrate as "inert".
The Oklahoma City terrorist attack was carried out using essentially an Ammonium Nitrate bomb. It contained approximately 2.5 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, nitromethane, and a diesel fuel (petroleum) mixture. The shipment that our Premier tried to facilitate was therefore potentially enough material to construct ten bombs of the size used in Oklahoma City.

Mr. Bush, I can assure you that prayer changes things. We are praying for you. God has a plan that will materialize in time. It is heart rending to know that you have been deceived by your own. You have not been tried and proven guilty, but has been sentenced to death by your own. It is sad to see people who said they are educated and are leaders, voted against themselves. This has not happened anywhere else in the world. The little knowledge I have of politics has revealed that this is far from being political. It is outright hatred and vicious maliciousness. I am encouraging you to forgive them and pray for them. Remember the words of the Lord "When your ways please God, even your enemies will be at peace with you". May God continues to guide and protect you. We are praying and please be reminded that "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteousness man availeth much".

If I was under suspicion of stealing from the company I work for, I would be immeadiatelty suspended from work pending the outcome, why the double standard for Bush?

I don't want any blood letting, we are all Caymanians here and I would have prefer if Mr. Bush had stepped down as Premier rather than what happened. I don't like blood letting either, but if guilty he should be held responsible for money stolen from the people. I also think it is highly unethical and dishonest to be taking retirement pay and salary at the same time, Retirement pay is for retirement! That's why it's called Retirement Pay.

Sitting quietly on the other side of the room for a few months and then running (and winning) as an independent in May I could see Mr. Bush finishing his political career with his dignity intact. Maybe the next Premier would even send him on a few fact finding missions to Las Vegas or Bangkok.
Mounting the rise of the NUDP will no doubt cause the efforts of the investigators to increase and our former Premier may well be charged and convicted from the allegations arising from his arrest.
