Cop smashes car on Brac

| 04/01/2013

(CNS): A female RCIPS officer has been involved in a single vehicle accident on Cayman Brac while driving a police patrol car. A police spokesperson confirmed that at about 9:00am yesterday, 3 January, the officer, who was driving a marked Suzuki Vitara in South Side Road, left the road and collided with a light pole. “The police vehicle sustained major damage and the officer was taken to the Faith Hospital with minor injuries. She was released following treatment," the spokesperson said, noting that no other vehicles were involved. The RCIPS is now carrying out enquiries into the cause of the crash and the officer has been suspended from driving police vehicles pending the outcome of that investigation.

This is not the first time that a serving police officer has been involved in such a crash and several investigations, the results of which have never been made public, are believed to be underway regarding cops who have been involved in road crashes while on duty.

Anyone who witnessed this latest crash is asked to contact Inspector Pearson Best at Cayman Brac police station on 948-0331.

As soon as a cop makes a mistake you all have jokes, without the uniform they are just like us.

Try Telling them that then cause they think they are better than us…………….

Well anon 8:41 like many other things around ya Driving courses amongst other courses were standard for the RCIPS but like everythings else when the "overtrained experts" arrive here from foreign shores they were no longer needed. I hope this explains  and sheds some light as to why other things around here are the way they are and not being done.

We should go back to the old system and let them patrol on donkeys. They don't need steering wheels and if they run off the road no damage is done.

    So quick to judge here!!!

Many things can cause a crash such as a blown out of a tyre, dog/cat/chicken on the road, local idiot walking on the road way as there are few pavements, even sneezing can sometimes cause you to lose control.

As per usual with CNS and cayman news 27 only post the basic facts to sensationalise what actually is quite a dull story to provoke outrageous responses. If you drive for work everyday no matter who you are or how well trained you are, sooner or later statistically you will have a crash.

Especially here with crap cars most of with need scrapping, rubbish roads (with the exception of darts new bit) and a local driving license that is so poorly thought of you can’t even go to England and swap it for an English one without a retest. Something even Turks and cacos and the Bahamas don’t even have to do! Hell even the French who drive on the wrong side of the road can swap a French license for an English one. What a slap in the face for the brittish territory of cayman

Stop making excuses. If you represent the Law, you are not above the Law. Period.

      Who are you?

    • Anonymous says:

But a cell phone slapped on the ear increases the percentage by a lot.

"brittish, Turks and cacos"? Listen up, you cocky little troll. Before you take the moral high ground, at least learn to use the language that you are lashing people with.

I have found your offering to be ill-informed, arrogant and unwelcome. Please go back to school.

    • Nah says:

So quick to judge here yet then you devote the next two paragraphs trashing the media, the cars, the roads, the locals, etc.  Here's a word for you, you ignorant and arrogant TWERP!

They won't like you telling them the truth.

Anyone driving regularly on Grand Cayman, and is paying attention, cannot fail to notice that police drivers seldom use indicators. As this is a road traffic offence these officers are routinely breaking the laws we are paying them to enforce. Additionally, I have observed a white police Suzuki SUV fail to come to a complete stop on at least two occasions at the four-way stop in West Bay. It just sailed through following on behind the car in front, which had obeyed the law and come to a halt despite the junction being clear of traffic. When I first saw this I was taken aback, it was so blatant. WHEN are the police going to observe the traffic laws of this country?

The report does not indicate a 'high speed chase'. There is absolutely no reason for a single car accident on Cayman Brac's road on the South Side this street is almost straight. Surely carelessness is the culprit but certainly we can expect no consequences

…and whose bright idea was it to buy pursuit/chase cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side???? Everytime they overtake another moving vehicle they put other people's lives at risk. Would it have been so hard to source right hand drive police vehilces – we do drive on the left here!

    • Anonymous says:

Thats funny! You have figured out a way to make it the cars fault.

    • Anonymous says:

I've made this comment before but why oh why buy left hand drive American cars when a Mitsubishi Evo or a Subaru Impreza would (a) be far safer as RHD (b) much better as pursuit vehicles, very quick and 4WD!!. I agree with theother message, LHD cars in Cayman put every other road user at risk. Even if you have a passenger telling you when it's safe to overtake that's still not safe!!!.

    • Anonymous says:

So you would blame steering wheel placement over operator competency?  Classic.

      • Anonymous says:

When did I comment on 'operator competency'? I am simply stating that the purchase of the left-hand drive Chargers as pursuit/chase cars was absolute madness and a massive issue of public safety and should be investigated. I don't think anyone can argue with that.

The cry for more men & equipment is not far off but no worries like Mac who thought by appeasing this UK run overstaffed law enforcement "Munster" you will get immunity to do as you like, boy! he found out otherwise now didn't he?Just like Bushy our new Righteous and pious leader will too follow suit even though the budget and economy simple cannot afford it. A couple of well controlled and orchestrated crime situations will do the trick and prompted them to provide the necessary funding aaaah same old colonial game played on the same old fool fool loyal subjects works everytime. See robberies and muggings are already on the increase in this  Police state a little less police presence is all that is need to make it all possible.

Try training RCIP officers in proper police driving techniques instead of leaving them to their own devices. The standard of driving on these islands is dreadful in any case, (110 accidents in 30 days, really?) make all potential officers take a UK or US driving course and ONLY pass them to drive when proficient and not when it suits operational requirements.

Oh yes, and stop them using cell phoneson the move.

i have never seen a cop car use its indicators……..never…..

    • Harrow says:

anon@07:47Either you are very young, very old, or never left the perimeter of your home, or you are a good liar. Which of them are you?

      • Anonymous says:

        Harrow,
I am not very young and not very old either; quite often I am leaving the perimeter of my house, and I am trying to speak the truth.
And, I haven’t seen cops using indicators, ever. More importantly, indicators are so seldomly used on this island that I am starting to think was I attending a wrong driving school. And, yes in my country there is a mandatory driving school with a professional and experinced and above all trained driver as teacher.
You guys do not know a basic rules of the road, and driving huge gas gaslers isn’t helping either. Speeding, not following rules, texting and endless talking on the phone while driving is what put me twice in the hospital. thank  you drivers

      • P A Rody says:

I agree with the OP, but I have seen an indicator used by a police car, but very very rarely. I have b=never seen a bus or taxi use one though

    • Anonymous says:

The cops do not broadcast there future moves…operational procedures. Hence no indicators!!!

    # 1 – Anyone performing a high speed chase or any chase in Cayman Brac should be fired.  Everyone knows everyone in Cayman Brac so they would know who is driving the car and where to find them.

    # 2 – I'm not saying that this is what this police woman was doing but there is one in the Brac that seems to have a cell phone attached to her ear.  I have never seen her without that cell phone attached to her ear and yes, she was driving.  They should have to be hands free like the rest of us.

    • Anonymous says:

Don't the Police have radios? The only communication that a Police officer on duty should be having is via official Police communications gear, so that everything is logged and recorded.  They shouldn't even be carrying a personal mobile phone, never mind using it

  12. Anonymous says:

the reason is simple some people don’t care when the property is not their own. but in this case it might pay to be careful it could cost a life.

  13. Anonymous says:

I wonder how many of these accidents are due to cell phone use. Unless police officers have some special red or blue pill that make them more focused than the rest of us, they are no different from us… no less "human", so the law should apply to them.

There is no reason why they shouldn't get hands free kits like the rest of us.

  14. Anonymous says:

There are numerous such incidents that the public does not hear anymore about, other than (sometimes) the initial accident report. For example:

Cop in high speed pursuit ran over a person outside his vehicle

Cop at low speed runs into fence a few hundred yards from Central police station

Cop runs red light and crashes with driver by cricket oval lights

Cop crashes with other driver by Compass lights

and now this cop drives off the road and hits a pole

Damn those moving poles on the Brac!

My favorite was a few years back when they used a brand new cop car as a blockade across the road when another brand new cop car was in hot pursuit of a perp. The perp handily swerved around the "blockade" which didn't cover the whole road and the second cop car then T-boned right into it. No one was hurt but both new cop-cars were destroyed, This was before CNS and it never made the papers 😉

  15. Anonymous says:

My my, our RCIPS do seem to have a lot of "single vehicle accidents" don't they?

  16. Anonymous says:

    uh-oh spaghettios…..

  17. Frank says:

The main reason is simple. The police receive minimal and im sure sometimes no training in pursuit/high speed driving. There have been 2 incidents in the last year where police cars have collided with civilian cars and its has been the police officers fault. Somehow, fortunately for them the vehicles they hit had been operated by people under the influence. It still doesnt take away from the fact that one of them involved an officer running a red light at hight speed and colliding with another car, observed by many witness'. All officers can not be blamed for the few who disregard public safety i must say, but alot of officers operate their sirens just to beat traffic, illegally park, talk on the phone, never wear seatbelts and do not use signals. Im sure i will not be the only person making theses comments which means it must be an issue. Between the police and the bus drivers, sometimes i dont know who i should be more cautious of!
