Air gun recovered near new school campus

| 12/02/2013

CHHS.jpg(CNS): Police are now investigating the discovery of what turned out to be a BB gun close to the Clifton Hunter School in Frank Sound on Friday following a report by a member of the public to school security. Disciplinary action has reportedly been taken by the school regarding the students involved but police enquiries are ongoing regarding the recovery of the gun. At the start of the school day on Friday, the education ministry said, a report was made by a member of the public to school security that a student was seen just outside the school campus, hiding a suspicious object.

The principal and a security guard immediately investigated the report and discovered what appeared to be an air gun, which they took action to secure before calling the police.

The school’s community police officer was contacted, who arranged for the appropriate RCIPS units to respond to the incident. The RCIPS then took possession of the BB gun.

Following the school’s internal investigation, parents of the students involved were contacted and disciplinary action taken in accordance with the school’s policy, the ministry stated in a release on Tuesday.

“The Ministry of Education and Department of Education Services treats the safety of students as a top priority,” officials said. “Through the Safer Schools initiative we have been working to build stronger partnerships with the police and other key stakeholders to ensure that schools are safe, caring and welcoming places for students to learn. We commend the swift and thorough response by the school, the vigilance of the individual who made the initial report and the prompt support of the RCIPS.”

The rcips needs to investigate and find how this children were able to acquire the weapon. If it is traced to an adult or an association then the adult or the chairman of the association be fined and jailed for the maximum penalty. Obliviously someone is bringing these weapons to our shores and children are getting their hands on them. Thank God no one was injured and it wasn’t a real gun.

6 to 9 months in jail for killing someone while drunk with a car and no criminal record.

take a lobster and it's a 250,000 fine and imprisonment.

You folks are really on an island that time forgot

Look at it from another side. At least it was not some NUT with a real gun shooting innocent kids in school as we see far to freqently elsewhere. And long may that be the case here! In that way I am glad we are on an island that time forgot.

On the other hand, would appear there are too many illegal weapons here, time to have:

      1. An amnesty and special dump for people giving in illegal weapons

      2. A crackdown and legal search of premises of people suspected of having such weapons

      3. An increase in penalties for illegal weapon handling or owning, minimum 15 years. A minimum 30 year penalty if you use the thing in anger or threaten people with it The only reason you would have a gun here is for causing trouble.

Are you on crack or are you simply a moron?  Any weapon especially at a school is troubling at the very least and all guns are illegal unless you have a license.  This kid and his parents should be locked up for 10 years.  That is the law.

Seems like you got anger issues buddy. You have your right to an opinion as does the blogger who wrote and got your vitriolic and offensive reply. Hope you never got hold of a gun, you seem to think you are one of the "righteous" who can dish out justice and sentence on your own.

Big bust here.  A BB gun??? When I was growing up every kid I knew had a BB gun.  It is not a weapon and does not deserve the attention the news media is giving the situation.  Every kitchen has a butcher knife that is much more dangerous than a BB gun.  Wish I had one to control the iguanas around my house.  This is ridiculous.

    • Anonymous says:

What do you mean "this is ridiculous"?  It is a gun – guns are illegal.  Why wasn't anyone arrested?  They know who they are.  The sentence is 10 years for any gun.

      • Anonymous says:

It looks like a pellet pistol and if so is nearly the equal of a .22 short.

        • Anonymous says:

The report says a BB gun, which usually has a muzzle energy of less than 2 ft-lbs. I had one in the States some years ago and it wouldn't put a hole in a cardboard target at more than 5 feet. If it's an airsoft pistol, it could be even less. A .22 short probably has a muzzle energy of  > 70 ft-lbs – a completely different prospect.Very few air weapons come anywhere close to that.

Still, even a BB gun could cause serious eye injuries with an unlucky shot at close range – not something that children should be playing with

You don'[t know what you're talking about.

            • Anonymous says:

And where was the error in that statement?

            • NeoSurvivor says:

Not that it matters, however everything in the statement you responded to is correct.

The important thing of this story is that a BB gun was taken to a school.   This is the fault of the parent as much as the student.   I had a pellet/BB gun (it would shoot either) as a child;   I wouldn't have considered taking it to school, and if I had, I would've had far more to fear from my parents than the authorities.

Thing is, Compass has a picture and it's obviously a gas powered pellet gun.

            • Anonymous says:

A picture clearly taken from Wikipedia, not claimed to be a picture of the gun found. However, as an example, the picture says that the gun has a muzzle velocity of 480 fps, so if a BB pellet has a weight of say 6 grains (they are usually between 5 and 6 grains in weight), that translates into a muzzle energy of 480 x (6/7000) = 0.4 ft-lbs. Still quite a long way from the 70 ft-lbs of a .22 short.

        • Anonymous says:

While I agree that there should be no tolerance for ANY kind of firearm at schools, I vehemently disagree that even a high-power .22 pellet gun has anywhere NEAR the penetration of a .22 short.    Not even close.

        • Anonymous says:

Caliber size? Maybe. Velocity and projectiles? Slow-moderate and non life threatening, So in the case of equivalence stands next to none. This is a toy, not a gun. But these toys do seem to bring an onset in mentality of real weapon holding which is why it (should) be prohibited and not because it’s(a weapon). It’s not at all a wepon.

          • Truth says:

If were pointed at your little girl or boys eye would you then still say it is NOT a weapon?

      • Anonymous says:

When I was a kid we would make our hands look like guns and string a rubberband around them and go around shooting people.  I've been hit by a BB and can say with certainty that there are times the rubberbands hurt more.  Should I have gone to jail?  A gun is not a gun…there is a huge difference between a firearm and a toy.

    • Annonymous!!! says:

Hey numbnut, have you ever been hit with a bb pellet ? well I have, and its a hell of a sting that leaves a welt and last a long time.

You my dear should be tied to a tree and let the lil punk unload his pellets on you.

      Idiot.

    • Anonymous says:

There should be zero tolerance for guns in school zones.

BB gun or not, there is absolutely no justifiable reason for this student to have any kind of gun or weapon in or around the school.

    • Anonymous says:

Let a sentence of 10 years for anyone caught with such a weapon make sure that the cancer of gun ownership does not spread across this land.

      • Anonymous says:

XXXX….10 years for a toy with the shooting velocity of a hand-me-down sling shot. 70% of the people in this CNS section don't even know what an "air pistol" or "airsoft gun" is. It's a TOY MODELED gun, that uses a spring/burst of air pressure to lauch (in 99.999% of the cases) a small soft/hard plastic ball. Pellet guns and airsoft guns are 2 completly different items. While a pellet gun can be classified as a Class 2 firearm because it projects metal balls at more than 500fps, a airsoft pistol with the velocity of 75-150fps shooting plastic balls are harmless. Stop trying to lock up locals for 10 years for a simple modeled gun because you're afraid of guns. It's the intention of being a gateway modeled toy to an even greater threat that you should be worried about. These toys should simply be destroyed and users caught using or storing such items be sentenced to community service to greater benifit the cayman people and not to destory the lives of people with such harsh sentences of 10 years imprisonment.

        • Anonymous says:

But that is the law and until it is changed the sentence is 10 years. No one was arrested in this case. Unless , of course, a school child had a license for this gun!

        • Anonymous says:

Jail them.  You have failed to make a persuasive counter-case.

        • Anonymous says:

But at the moment it is illegal to have an unlicensed gun and the penalty is 10 years in jail.  Many people think that this is ridiculous but until the law is changed that is what it is.  You cannot choose which laws are ignored because you don't agree with the penalty.  Talk to your MLA's and tell them what you think but until the law is changed someone should have been arrested and face 10 years in jail unless the student had a license for it.
