Driver critical following single vehicle crash

(CNS): Another person has been seriously injured on Cayman’s roads, police revealed Thursday. A young male driver is being treated for critical head injuries at the George Town hospital following what appears to be a single vehicle collision. Police said that on Tuesday 12 February at about 3:17am a 23-year-old man sustained serious injuries in a road smash in Bodden Town. The man was believed to have crashed the car he was driving into a cement wall at a home along Bright View Drive off Shamrock Road. The victim remains at the local hospital in George Town in a critical condition.

The news of this latest serious local road smash was released by the RCIPS on Thursday just hours after news that a tourist had died from injuries sustained after he was hit by a car crossing the West Bay Road on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the police, community activists and government representatives have launched a new road safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road and to stop people using their cell phones behind the wheel.

There were 1,245 traffic incidents in Cayman last year and police revealed that since the start of this year 25 people have already been arrested for DUI and 80 ticketed for using their phones behind the wheel.

This won't stop unless there is a serious, serious crack down on driving under the influence and police does regular checks, enforcements and the consequences will be severe.

I recently went on a trip overseasand met up with a bunch of friends I haven't seen for a while. 8 out of 10 drank non-alcoholic beverages (including alcohol free beer) and the two who did drink liquor went home by taxi. Not one of them even contemplated to tempt faith and drive after having consumed alcohol. Why? Because they knew the consequence for being caught driving under the influence would be drastic. Here, people drive around without a license all the time. Why? They know the odds to be caught are not very high!

For example, why does the police not put up a road block in the Rumpoint area on Sundays? Have you ever been in Northside when the drunks are clearing out from Rumpoint when the sun sets and the speed racing back home begins? A road block up there on a regular basis would send a clear message and take some people off the our roads who should not be driving!

Police can campaing all they want but unless they enforce what they preach, we are just wasting time!
