5 elusive on election plans

| 22/03/2013

DSC_0030 (2) (208x300)_0.jpg(CNS): With less than one week to go before Nomination Day, the current Cabinet members are still giving very little away about their plans for the election. They confirmed yesterday that Richard Christian was joining their group to fight another one of the four seats in Bodden Town with Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour but they still did not reveal the name of their team or who else would be running on their ticket. Rolston Anglin and Cline Glidden were vague about whether they would be joined by anyone else in their efforts to retain seats in West Bay but said they would not be running with others just for the sake of numbers.

Speaking at the press briefing on Thursday, which took place in the afternoon in the absence of the premier, who was in Cayman Brac with the CPA delegates, the four ministers failed to specify how they would be fighting to retain their seats or how they would hope to form a government with only six members.

They implied that they could join forces with others who have already declared or are likely to by Nomination Day if they can find common ground, or even work with other candidates after the election to form the next government.

Anglin, who is currently education minister and deputy premier and will be fighting to retain the seat he has held in West Bay since 2000, stated that the government team was still going to campaign together.

“We have every intention of running together and we will be running as a team,” Anglin said, adding that over the next week they would be making public announcements about what they will be calling the group. “Given everything that has happened and everything that continues to happen, if between now and the next couple of weeks we can have a working relationship with others we will. But what I can say is that we have a lot to offer the country and we will be an important part of this election.”

Anglin emphasized the point that the government ministers had made a decision that they would not run with people for the sake of running with them. However, if they could find people to work with from a policy position and have what he described as a “sustainable relationship and mature discussions”, where they may disagree some of the time on some things but be able to create a foundation to build on, they would join up with other candidates.

“We are in store for a very interesting election campaign,” Anglin added.

With five C4C candidates running in the capital and five independents, including three former UDP members, the ministers may be seek to persuade a number of those to join in their team or party in order to have some representation in George Town.

With six seats, the district is going to prove a critical factor in the election and likely to reflect the make-up of the final government. Any party or group that is able to secure the majority of those seats is likely to end up controlling government, a point unlikely to have been lost on the incumbent ministers.

The PPM slate is already fixed with six candidates for George Town; the UDP has said it will be revealing its full team for the capital on Saturday at its general assembly; and although it is not clear if C4C has one more hopeful up its sleeve for George Town, it already has five names on its platform for the capital. Together with five other independents who have declared so far, this means there will be at the very least 22 people vying for one of the six seats in the country’s largest constituency, where some 7,500 people are eligible to vote.

Speculation over who will be running will be over by 3pm on Wednesday 27 March, when nominations close. But with the exception of the two formal political parties (the PPM and UDP), questions regarding which candidates will join forces, who will be distancing themselves from whom and who will work together will be likely to dominate the campaign trail until polling day. And as noted by Glidden, even after Election Day, which newly elected MLAs will join up together to form a government may still be very much in question.

It's not that they are being elusive about their election plans, it just that they can't find anyone who cares enough to listen to them.

Combine the C$C's 5 in Town, 2 in the west, and 2 in BT + Fab five 2 in the West, 1 in the Brace, and 2 in BT = the new team!  Not much has changed other than they don't have Mack and they aren't called UDP.

You know these people were slick tho? Check this out. They got rid of Mckeeva the minute he brought in the law about life long honorable status to all those who received the title, correct? If so, i would imagine it would have been in the now newly formed govt.’s best interest to (at the time) denounce their accused partner/leader in order to avoid losing out on those Hon name tags that the opposition who would have regained once back in control, right?? Well (sigh) i guess this means we have a few more honorable mentions to make every awards ceremony now, eh? Imagine all this backstabbing for an overused moniker? Terrible. But man dis some serious bad mindness going on. Especially against your mentor? Nah. Wicked games man. So just come and imagine what they would do to us Joe Public when we crossed hairs! Plenty scandal is going to come out this election. Very disappointing to have imagined, but now seems very necessary to know. This is going to get vile. Watch and pay attention. True colors ah coming. But may those who are true leaders emerge victorious! Round 1.

Lol! Seriously? We have to wait to hear who is joining this team? (biting nails) GET REAL!Just tell us who is running with you. Simple. Easy. This ain’t the U.S. Presidential Elections so please drop the drama. To me it’s better to field your intentions earlier rather than later. It not only gives people more time to observe and make a pick for an early favorite, but it also shows your eager to include your community in these types of big decisions. Which in turn shows openess. And hey, we sorta know it ain’t Mckeeva join unna.
    Duh.

Is it my eyes deceiving me or did John-John put on some weight since becoming Minister? Must be all the freebies! Yes BOTH parties and any off spring of them are done. It’s the year of the independents as we need independent thinkers and not 2 arrogant leaders being puppeteers for those who will only be here to serve one common purpose and that is to be a mouth piece for the said leaders.

I heard that everyone they have plans to run with, the Big Mac would call them up and warn them not to do so or he will expose something about them.  Everyone of them has skeletons in their closets and McKeeva will expose them when he get started on his dirty campaigning. What a mess in West Bay and Bodden Town. PPM is the better choice in West Bay, at lease their hands are clean and you can only accuse them for being over ambitious in building schools, roads and making laws to keep people like McKeeva in check.

Sorry UDP  in UDP Lite clothing. Anyone who supported, was a member of or helped the UDP in any way is partly responsible for everything McKeeva Bush did. You made him premier and you kept him as premier until you had absolutely no other option. Try as you might, you are no different.

I propose all the political candidates take a nice little trip for say, the first 30 days of the campaign. Lets send them someplace with not all the creature comforts they are used to.

Maybe split them into four groups to start. They would have a series of challenges. Readin, writin, rithmatics maybe. Possibly lie detectors, or backgound checks another. The group that scored the least in the challenges would have to ask one of their members to leave. The winning groups we would award extra advisors to help them with further challenges.

One would hope that the weakest candidates, would be eliminated, visible alliances would form, and we would have a real good idea, about what peoples skill levels were, who they were in bed with, and what they stood for.

We could tune in and watch it on the government TV channel! The Governor is a good looking man. He would be awesome to host the show.

Only Julianna is safe. Brackers will never ever get rid of her as they all owe so much to her and her handouts and illegal paving etc. She's like a Godfather making sure her Brackers get every cent that's going, way the hell out of proportion to what the Brac contributes to Cayman's economy.

      • Anonymous says:

It's really not the handouts so much as it is a viable candidate to replace her;  there are plenty of Brackers that still don't approve of the parking lot pavements, or the Premier in general.     Mr. Moses is respected by most, and will likely be reelected.    It's just a matter of finding another candidate that has been living on the Sister Islands and is known to the people.
