Traffic lights fail at major GT junction
(CNS): Traffic was in chaos Tuesday during the morning commute and the afternoon school run when the traffic lights failed twice at Bobby Thompson Way and Smith Road in George Town. The RCIPS urged motorists to be extra cautious as they approach the junction and to consider it as a four-way stop while the lights were out. The National Roads Authority temporarily fixed the problem this morning but they failed again sometime after 3pm. The RCIPS will be monitoring the situation and if need be will deploy officers to manage the traffic flow. Any enquiries about the traffic light repairs should be directed to the National Roads Authority.

It was chaos at various times yesterday and I have witnessed several 'near' accidents ….technology fails but there NEEDS to be police presence at all times whether it be rush hour or not
Thats police for ya!
What are you on about? Lights not working is the fault of the police? Seriously! I would hope the RCIP have better things to do then station an officer at a junction when the public is more than capable of dealing with the situation by treating it as a four way stop.
just make it a roundabout and forget the traffic lights which only create jams….
Actually I’m getting to work on time. It appears the traffic lights is what is causing the delays in the mornings. I agree it accident prone as no one knows who has the right of way.
But there was a very senior officer on South Sound this morning with a speed radar gun…. perhaps trying to collect the funds to fix the traffic lights? LOL (and before anyone says I know that this is really and NRA budgetry matter).
I drove though yesterday morning at about 7:00 a.m., called 911 and informed them that while I am sure others had called previously, as it was getting up to rush hour, there was a need for a police officer to aid in the traffic congestion. This morning at about 8:00 when I was on my way to work I noticed that the lights were still not working and there was no policeman. However, folks seem to be cooperating and using it as a 4 way stop. There were some people, especially those who were coming off the Linford Pierson Highway who seemed to think that they had the right of way, but most people were patient and co-operative.
Based on how long it took to get the Crosswalk installed on West Bay Road (maybe paint the zebra strips now so it can be finished) i think it would be fair to say it will take a few weeks to get this sorted. As there is a pretty major smash once or twice a week there, if after three weeks there are no accidents I propose removing the lights permanently and installing a four way stop.
four way stop????…. the worst solution ever……
I unfortunately have to drive through that intersection several times a day. Here's what I saw yesterday. Traffic trying to get through almost killing each other in their haste and a Police Officer sitting nice and cool in his air conditioned car instead of actually directing the traffice. Unbelievably Mickey Mouse traffic control.
There was one sitting in his car watching at 5 yesterday as well, great use of public funds.
Well it still wasnt working this morning nor last night at 10 pm
"Traffic lights fail at major junction" – "RCIPS will deploy officers if needed".
Are they waiting on an accident first?… (asked rhetorically).
i drove through at a high traffic time. There were police. I drove through later when there was less traffic, there was no police. Seems a sensible allocation of resources. – We could quible about the need to have police there at 'medium' traffic times, but hopefully we'll all agree that there's some low-traffic times, like 2am, when the police don't need to be there. Which is what "deploy if needeed" means.
I drove through 4 times yesterday and not once was a policeman inside the intersection directing traffic. Yes, one was on the side of the road on their phone, the next time a motorcop was on the side of the road, and the last time inside a patrol car on the side of the road looking down at his phone or notes.
No traffic direction at all, but told the RCIP bosses they were THERE. Doing nothing, but there.
And it was more upsetting that yesterday 949-4222 would NOT answer the main police line all morning?!?
Did the top cop go on holiday as soon as his contract was renewed?
I drove through this morning (Wednesday) at peak going to work/school time and there wasn't a policeman there.
