UDP down but not yet out

| 24/05/2013

mac downstairs2.jpg(CNS): Despite the fact that the leader of the United Democratic Party is going back to the Legislative Assembly with only two of his team, the results reveal that the trouncing was not as emphatic as one may first perceive as Bush still managed to collect more than 31% of the national vote compared to the approximate 43% taken by the PPM and the 25% picked up by the collection of various independents, PNA and C4C candidates. The UDP’s Teresa Pitcairn missed getting a seat by a mere 41 votes, securing 36% of the district vote, and her running mate Chris Saunders also attracted 30.5% of the vote.

Meanwhile, in George Town the vote was widely split across all 21 candidates, and had the C4C not managed to  function as a party, despite the group’s constant denial, and attract a block vote, the UDP’s strongest contender in George Town, Mike Adam, would easily have secured a seat, after polling some 36% of the vote.

In addition, while the UDP team fared badly in the capital, the party did not completely collapse in the way that the former members and newly established PNA group did in Bodden Town and West Bay. Ellio Solomon still managed to attract well over a quarter of the voters in the capital, and the other four candidates on the party ticket also all picked up more than 22% of the vote.

Over in West Bay, McKeeva Bush’s vote was slashed down to a mere 47% of the vote compared to the whopping 71.5% he secured in 2009, as a result of an incredible performance by Tara Rivers. However, the UDP's Velma Powery-Hewitt, who missed out on a seat, still polled 32% of the vote, well over the 23% pulled in by Rolston Anglin of the PNA and streets ahead of the 18% which was all his running mate Cline Glidden could muster.

Although the votes polled by the UDP in George Town were way off the size of the pre-election crowds Bush had managed to attract in the capital, the fears that the split vote  could have enabled the UDP to seize the day were not necessarily unfounded. Adam was in the top six throughout most of the count, and with well over 1,528 and 1,439 votes respectively, both Ellio Solomon and Jonathan Piercy lost only around 200 votes from their 2009 performance.

The strength that the C4C had, which carried them through, was in the end ironic as it was their decision to run collectively and encourage each other’s supports to vote ‘straight’ for all of the C4C candidates thatprotected the country from a UDP victory rather than causing one.

With the exception of Bo Miller, who beat most of the UDP as he very likely picked up the 6th C4C vote, other independent candidates faded from the race early on and lagged well behind the UDP. The C4C used the strength of unity to get two of their members through and Sharon Roulston very near the top six. Jackee Haines ended up being the only C4C candidate that could not surpass the UDP.

Pitcairn and Saunders were both relatively near misses in Bodden Town, and despite the sterling performance of Rivers, she was still unable to carry her running mate, Mervin Smith, through the UDP support. Johnnie McLean Jnr, the ‘non-confessed’ UDP supporter, also managed to improve on his percentage of the vote by some 2%, despite the popularity of Arden McLean and the personal problems plaguing the younger McLean.

There is no doubt that the UDP is somewhat battered and bruised, especially given the incredible and emphatic breakthrough by Tara Rivers in Bush’s stronghold, but the party is by no means out in terms of national as well as West Bay support.

However, despite the party leader’s ability to rise like a phoenix, no matter the depth of his fall, the 11 charges of corruption and theft that will see Bush on trial in around 18 months time will be a serious test for the party. An acquittal will probably ensure the UDP’s survival but a conviction of the party leader is likely to see its final decline.

While 30% of voters across Grand Cayman still supported the UDP, when it comes down to it the vast majority of that vote was a direct vote for Bush and not a political party. As such, that might be when the UDP really will be out for the count.

Very well said 15:46. Having shown their true colors and confirmed that corruption clearly doesn’t matter to the average UDP supporter, I too will never, ever, under any circumstance, vote for UDP and will pay close attention in future to where I spend my hard earned dollars. Establishments owned and operated by UDP stalwarts who have no issue turning a blind eye to corruption will not receive my patronage.

When Bush faces the courts, the truth will come out regarding the extent and depth of the organization  he set up to serve himself at the Country's expense. Combined with the PPM's promise to bring in OMOV, the UDP will likely be reduced to a nasty scab on the history of these islands. The Cayman islands have been very badly damaged by the UDP. Since the elections, many people are more inclined to discuss what they know about the UDP's alleged corruption, and the full story is enough to make any decent person very worried and quite sick.

Mr Bush was  endowed with many of the gifts of  a natural leader, but in my opinion, he has squandered them in the pursuit of personal gain to an extent that I hold him personally responsible for creating a culture of corruption that has drawn in individuals from a whole generation of politicians and publc servants, for which he should never be forgiven. The damage will take years to put right, and in some cases never will be.

Mrr Bush has seduced and bludgeoned the country to follow him along  a dark path that leads a long, long way from where we should and could  have been today. That is why I condemn anyone who ran on the UDP ticket, as by doing so, they condoned apparent criminality. But I thank you all, because now I know who you are, I will never, ever, under any circumstances  vote for you in the future. Your colours have been clearly noted.

Now that the UDP has been thoroughly rejected by the Caymanian Voters, I trust that the first order of business for Mackeeva, will be to find a suitable muzzle for his Jordanian mouthpiece and himself, and that he will allow the new Government to settle in and start the work of moving this country in the right direction. Mackeeva has had his field day and the Voters hated it as expressed in the elections result, so he at least should shut up and sit quietly in his comfortable opposition chair until such time as it will be necessary for him to open his mouth.

So how do you feel about the new Speaker of the House that was a part of Mskeeve for the past almost 4 years? What kind of professionals were his running mates that they did not know what was going on? When the ship is sinking then you are going to jump off……

    Dear PPM,

Please do not give JuJu anything.  Leave her in her corner with KeKe.  I'm sure that you all can find someone to make a government besides her.

Really, there are six non-UDP, any one of whom may want to be a minister or the speaker rather than warm a seat on the opposition back bench, and there's your PPM majority.  It's going to be a bigger fight to figure out who the opposition leader is. JuJu looks like the key. Should be a fun read on CNS.

UDP is dead. I suggest if the party system is here to stay then another party needs to be formed to be the opposition. Clearly there’s a problem now if the now party cannot find the 10th man or woman to form the government then we are going to see a lot of the independents eat their campaign words. Then again will there be an opposition?

Just when you thought it would be over and behind us! Alden you need another turtle meat cook up to clear your mind so you can decide your ministers 🙂 good luck and congratulations on your win!

It is hard to believe that 30% of the population supports the UDP which sadly says allot about 30% of the electorial population in that they obviously do not have ethics, are dishonest and corrupt in themselves for dishonesty, lying and breaking the law is fine and OK in their minds and they are saying that they condone and accept this from their representatives. This translates into 30% of the electorial population are not christians nor do they live or follow a christian way of life by blindly following their despot dictator and drinking the UDP Kool-Aid.

A REALLY SAD REALITY OF A SICK SECTION OF OUR COMMUNITY that they would be so gulible to follow and believe this shameless charlitan.

To the posters below: Actually the law PRESUMES one to be innocent until proven guilty but that simply means that one will not be subject to any judicial penalties until one has been proven guilty, but that should not divest us of our commonsense judgements which we all make in everyday life about those whom we lend our support to.  Christians can and must make those judgements even where there are no criminal convictions.

At least Rayal got his Six-Luv in George Town. That is a UDP Six-Luv and OUT of GT.

And local merchant Renard got his 1345 votes. No joke. Sterling Dwayne Ebanks said he was not making that up when he first announced it on Radio Cayman. Check the official stats here: http://www.elections.ky/images/downloads/2013/2013COUNT.pdf

Out of a total of 21 candidates in the capital of George Town, the those votes were good enough for Renard to take 16th place just one place ahead of Rayal in 17th.                           http://www.elections.ky/ge2013/Results/atlas.html?config=wide&style=wide&select=GT

Now those are accomplishments they can both hang on their walls, but will not get them anywhere near the Legislative Assembly.

Also the official election office statistics demonstrate how CNS came up with the percentages utilized in their story which are based on the total number of votes received by each candidate divided by the total number of votes cast by the electorate in each candidates respective disctrict. Not sure why CNS did not put up the links for clarity.

    • Anonymouse Man says:

Rayal destroyed himself not only by backing McKeeva but by copying his uglyness on the election podium.  Is that what you call a a good speaker? Emulating Mac's hateful, self-centered, greedy speaking style certainly is a big wall to be up against.  Had he not took over from Foolio as the mini-mouth piece for the UDP, orwait, had enough SENSE to stay away from the UDP altogether, people may have respected him more.  Too late now and forever. I am sohappy.  McKeeva advised the press that he still had the might to bring the UDP home in the election.  I guess he did, he brought the devout followers and the former members who crossed the floor home in West Bay(their individual homes).  It is a shame that good men fell at the wayside in the election, just because they started out the beginning of the last LA term in full support of the wannabe dictator.  Maybe now, those blindly supporting McKeeva will see the error of their ways and realise that he is only a poorly educated man who has no clue how to fairly deal with anyone who does not support him in every way blindly.  I used to vote for McKeeva when I lived in West Bay because, at that time , he genuinely cared for his people and his country.  Whatever happened to him, I don't know, but the Big Mac that I knew was a man who put his people and his country bedore himself.  However, I really do not think it wuld be wise for our new Premier to choose Julianna O'Connor-Connolly as the Speaker.  She knew what the former premier was doing and not only condoned it, but helpd put us where we are noow by her unnecessary world travels on our dime,  I hope the new Premier will chooose Ezzard Miller as the Speaker.

        1. she can't vote.  2. Cayman Brac has another elected member. 3. PPM have their 10th person.

Ezzard needs to be on the opposition because he is the only elected person for North Side so he needs to be able to vote plus his truck has a mail box.

  21. SKEPTICAL says:

In a close knit parochial society like Cayman, percentages are irrelevant as an indicator of the strength, or otherwise, of a ” Political Party “, particularly in WB. Unlike the UK , where many candidates are virtually unknown to their constituents, but whose Party’s aims and philosophies are well established, votes in Cayman are invariably cast for an “individual”. with the voter having little or no understanding of what that candidate’s Party really stands for – the whaffling Manifestos of all the local Parties are meaningless without hard facts and figures to quantify their objectives. They invariably dangle the promise of ” jam tomorrow”.
Without wanting to take too much away from the PPM victory, the result is possibly also indicative of people not so much wanting a PPM government but rather, not wanting bush and the UDP for another four years. The result is certainly the one for which I had hoped.

  22. Anonymous says:

Considering all that has happen during the last 4 years.  Mac behavior is really what did him in. Not his performance, or the results of his administration.  The same can be said for most of PNA.

Where is the story behind that one ? How do you spin "UDP by another colour" when all the PNA group had to do was stay UDP if they wanted get back in, How  about counting those numbers.

I am sure your Maths is out, how can someone (Ms Pitcairn) coming 5th in the race get 36% of the vote? If there  are 4 people ahead of her, and you claim that Chris got 30% That is 66% which means that 33% was split between the rest…. just on the face of it does not add up…..but I havent actually checked it out yet……

EG with 32,832 votes cast in GT, Ellio with 1530 votes, got 4.66% of that not 25%, unless there is some strange way of working out percentages that I am unaware of?

CNS: They are multi-member constituencies, with each voter having the same number of votes as there are MLAs in that district. As a hypothetical, the top four candidates in Bodden Town could each get 100% of the vote.

    • Anonymous says:

Why don't you consider that the vote then is 4 times more than the voters? If a voter voted for one UDP and 3 PPM, which column do you put him in? Both? 25/75? What?

    • Anonymous says:

I cannot believe people this stupid have the right to vote.

    • Anonymous says:

But CNS to try and calculate it that way gives a totally misleading picture, plus, for example in GT, not every voter cast 6 votes, times the number of voters that cast votes by 6 and it shows that the number of actual votes cast is less. 5892 (voters) * 6 (number of votes each) = 35, 352 votes in fact 32, 832 was the final tally = 5.57 each

You should use the total number of actual votes cast to work out the real percentage of the vote. For Ellio you quote 25% (in GT) are you saying a quarter of the voters in GT voted for him, clearly that is not the case…… he only got 4.66 of the total NUMBER OF VOTES cast.

There were 12,589 votes cast in Bodden Town, as a percentage of that figure Ms Pitcairn got 10.74% not 36%

BTW 3,626 voters voted in Bodden Town, if all had cast 4 votes that would have been 14, 528 actual votes, so clearly not everyone cast 4 votes each- the average was 3.47 each lol.

Please put it in a way that is able to be understood by everyone….I cannot comprehend how out of the total number of votes you are saying there could be figures of 400 or 500 or 600 %

Is your method a way of trying to work out how many actual voters voted for each candidate? If so that is not a percentage of the VOTE

    • Anonymous says:

Theresa received a vote from thirty six percent of the persons that cast ballots but not thirty six percent of the total votes. It therefore means that thirty six percent supported her as being a representative of the people.

    • Dred says:

It's actually correct. It's ugly in it's presentation but actually correct.

What you end up with is somewhat of a distorted figure because if you add the percentages up it will be way beyond 100% but it's because of the voting system.

With each person only being able to vote for a politician once it must be based on the ballots and not the actual number of votes cast which would in most cases be the normal measuring stick.

If we had OMOV it would be the right way.

    • Anonymous says:

I don't think you calculated it correctly. It would have been based on the number of electorates that voted.  So you would have to divide the votes he received by the number of electorates who voted, which were 5,829

      • Anonymous says:

In GT it was 5,828, BT 3,593 & WB 3,349 total ballots counted in each district.

  27. Just Commentin' says:

As the dust settles, one very important point emerges, we all owe the C4C a deep debt of gratitude because they were a substantial fly in the ointment for the UDP. C4C stole enough votes from the UDP to knock Mac off his high horses and relegate the UDP to a role of relative insignificance in the house.

In spite of the pre-election babbling of PPM supporters encouraging people not to "waste" their vote for the C4C and fear-mongering about casting a ballot for the C4C diluting the votes and possibly enabling the UDP to emerge with a government, the numbers do suggest that C4C exerted a telling influence in the outcome of this election. The PPM owes them one.

Thank you C4C! While you may not have achieved you goal of forming a government, you did have a big hand in spanking the UDP and delivering us from the threat of another for years of moronic, wasteful rule; for that I and a lot of others in the Cayman Islands are extremely grateful.

What they got was booted out. The people of the Cayman Islands sent them a clear and concise message and that message is we will not accept real or percieved corruption andthe people who support it.

Don't believe me? Let's look at the realities of this election….

UDP in the last election got 9 of the then 15 seats with PPM having 5 with 1 independent.

This year UDP got 3 seats and 1 former UDP got 1. That a 55.6% reduction.

PPM now has 9 up from 5 which is a 55.6% increase. Not even counting 1 independent who left PPM but was returned.

Independents went from 1 to 5 seats.

That's the facts. Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades as they say. Who comes 5th in a 4 person race is for all intense purposes is irrelevant.

Big Mac can spin this 6 ways til Sunday facts are facts and the fact is he is now a back benchers with independents having more clout than he does.

  30. SANDFLY says:

WILL HE DO THE HONORABLE THING AND RESIGN?

This is a very insightful article. What amazes me is that 30% of our national population would hang their hopes on a man in my opinion is totally self centered and narcissistic. He even corrupted the church with cash contributions in the disguise of “Home Building”, a man that never missed an opportunity to hurl false charges at anyone that would speak-out against a policy of his. The 30% never seen this as being dangerous and dictatorial and a pattern of primitive politics. Now there are a few of the 30% that are just plain opportunists with feathering their own nest at the expense of their fellow citizens plain and simple. You find that in every culture and country. How can you vote for a leader that has charges such as these against him? I think that our first Premier should do the honorable thing and resign from the party leadership until his extremely serious charges are resolved. But who said he performed honorable acts of kindness? That’s what being in total control does to a man that’s been at the helm so very long. It’s all about him.

    • Anonymous says:

You have to understand the way the poor and ignorant vote in West Bay. Whoever "looks after" their immediate needs is who they vote for. They also voted for his other three stooges. Since there won't be the money to "look after" them now, we will see what happens.

He will never resign, the title "honourable" and actions that are actually honourable are two very different things.

Add in those who got scholarships through the nation building fund (99 families) and those churches who brought him up in front of their membership and told them what a good man he is and that they should pray for him, it is easy to see how he could do it in West Bay.

The educated green kool aid drinkers are another bunch, including those who haven't lived in West Bay for years but still vote there.

The “poor and ignorant” vote the same, the world over – for those who “look after” their needs. That’s why they are kept poor and ignorant.

Statasticts you can twist them anyway you want them to appear

the facts are there are only 3 UDP, 1 UDP lite (22%)  in the house.

If you count what they will contribute to the betterment of our country that

will be  (0%) just more and more rrhetoric and revenue wasted on court proceedings.

A sound rejection by the people. We all had nuf of dem.

People voted for Theresa as Theresa not because she was UDP

Not sure which reason is worse…

you should stay away from this site and from commenting as you are clearly a fool…swallow that pill of hard truth!!!!

And unfortunately for Theresa… Many people I know DID NOT VOTE FOR HER BECAUSE SHE RAN UDP… Now I know some will say she also received votes because she ran with UDP but judging from the overall results I would say it was a BAD CALL. THIRD TIME IS A CHARM…. Regroup and try again Theresa… You have valuable contributions to make to Cayman… Oh and plz remember next speak in your own speak… You know what I’m saying.

No chance ever again for her.  Her poor judgement and support of McKeeva's corrupt and dictatorial ways exposed her true roots.  Outside of West Bay EVERY viable candidate that has associated themselves with McKeeva and the UDP has become a non-factor in the next election afterwards.

        Frank McField, – non-factor 2013

Gilbert McLean – did not even run in 2013

Roy Bodden – has not run in the last two elections

and now Mike Adam, who most thought was wishy-washy anyway is GONE!!

Like Roy Bodden she can make her contributions to Cayman elsewhere but not as a MLA.  People are tired, tired, tired of hearing those McKeeva type mouths running on the radio, news reports and TV.  Time for representatives to be intellegent and POSITIVE!!

    CNS, don't encourage him, please.

I disagree.   He will encourage himself without anyone's help.   I didn't vote for any UDP or PNA candidates, however I applaud CNS for even-handed reporting.

Puleasse, CNS. We've heard enough about mckeeva bush and his mad followers to last us for fifty lifetimes. Let us praise Almighty God we finally have a new and better government and a new future and new hope before us and put and keep our attention THERE, PLEASE.

    • Hoping for better days says:

I see you're still getting more than your share of negative thumbs. Frankly I would just give up my friend. So sorry to step on your corn again. Maybe you should start wearing the right size shoes. Try the new PPM ones on for a change. They're made from genuine top grade leather and they're so stylish and comfortable compared to those miserable plastic ones you've been wearing. To top it off it looks like your barrel of free kool aid just ran out. Well not to worry my friend. The PPM is here with a whole container load of fresh, all natural juices in an unbelieveable variety of flavors. Do yourself and the world a favor and give your dead hero a decent burial my friend. Better days are finally here to stay.

Despite all that, we can say "hwweeww"… near miss but THANK GOD we have dont have the UDP to RULE over the Public Purse.

We Bracers would like to have our AMAZING Capt Mose to be our Tourism MINISTER  please please please!!!!!! Congrats to him again well deserved. We can afford to send him abroad to represent us as he is not going to hit the shopping malls first.

      • Anonymous says:

Moses should have run as leader of the PPM. He's a great communicator and a solid  businessman. Furthermore, he has the charisma that Aldon unfortunately lacks.  He's liked and respected, and I believe would have made a good leader of the party.

All this rhetoric about julie being Speaker of our Honourable house IS MERE SHI..T. Remember she was one speaker and she ran the Caymanians out of the gallery. We will hit you so hard Alden and Kurt if you should ever entertain this stupid idea.

      • Anonymous says:

how could they be so foolish to consider her for anything? Both of her parties udp and pna were rejected by the country.  Have they forgotten what she did to them with the hurricane paloma $$$$? How stupid can one be? if they include her again then they deserve what they get·
