Chantal to swing away from Caribbean Sea
(CNS): Early predictions from the National Hurricane Centre in Miami that Tropical Storm Chantal could be heading along the southern coast of Cuba and near to the Cayman area have been revised. On the current path Chantal poses no threat to our region as the storm is now predicted to pass across the Lesser Antilles then the eastern Caribbean, heading between Puerto Rico and Hispaniola before moving along the Northeast coast of Cuba and up towards Florida. According to the NHC, at 8am on Tuesday Chantal was about 45 miles NNW of Barbados and was still speeding along at 26mph. Packing winds of 50mph, some strengthening is forecasted for Chantal, whose winds currently extend out some 90 miles from the centre.

Any predictions yet from the Doppler system in east end? Would like to see if the really works???
Works fine just needs to get in range. The radar only sees out to around 400 km or over Jamaica. Look at http://www.weather.gov.ky

Actually, the site says a range of 250km.
the official range is 400 km. The map you are looking at is a 250 km one. There is also a 50 km for an in close of Grand Cayman.
Can Govt’s weather dept explain why the taxpaying public of the Cayman Islands is unable to access live time radar images from the new doppler facility??!

Ah. Many thanks. I was looking on the National Weather Service website and the Doppler is on the National Meteorological Service website. The Doppler works just fine. Quite why we appear to have two separate websites and services doing the same thing is worrying however……..
Chantal is ragged-looking on radar, however it all depends upon the ridge interaction and when that happens. If Chantal slows down her forward speed, it's possible for the storm's centre to go south of Cuba and intensify in an area where there is less wind shear. We shouldn't ever say X storm is going here or there, we should talk about it in terms of probabilities.
and the season is on the way. here comes the first through at least the northeast Caribbean.
